Hey everyone,

I am looking at doing a system update to my old x58 i7-920 rig, its having a pretty hard time in games now the 560 Ti is getting cooked, some white shading on BF3 is showing up as yellow... (its not that yellow snow).

Was going to update my whole system to an Ivy Bridge-E in September but im going to hold off on that as the X58 is doing and has been doing a good job at 4.2GHz for the last 2.5 years and i feel i may not seen a massive performance increase with a X79 apart from in my multi-threaded music sequencing software.

I think i can hold out till Haswell-E and the DDR4 ram to do a rig update.

What i am thinking of upgrading the graphics too is two gigabyte GTX 770 4B in SLI and i think ill have to get a new PSU i would say as 620w seems a bit lean for them and a 920@4.2, think ill go for the Corsair AX1200i and that should keep me going into the future.

What i am not to sure about is if SLI 770 will handle 2D surround (5760x1080) in games like BF3/BF4 and future released games?

Cheers :toast:

GTX770 is just a slightly overclocked GTX680 for the most part. Take a look at GTX680 reviews and base your decision on that.

2 GTX770s should run games just fine at 5760x1080. I wouldn't definitely think about getting 4GB versions though.

Hi

enough air flow for the 770's in my old Antec P182 case

Just my two cent's; get a new larger case for SLi ; [general guide *8 Expansion Slots] or ten for Tri SLi
[not sure a new HS intake fan is going to cut it]

nb: when choosing a mobo; ensure there are at least two PCIe slots between the top PCIe_x16 and the second card; unless they go on H2o

atb (all the best)

not sure if i can get the 2 16x lanes if i use the bottom slot...

Might have to look at a Corsair case, i really like what they have to offer.
Only hard part is finding a quite case with good airflow..... challenge

I would get a single 780 and add a second one later on.

I was thinking of that but it doesn't seem a big jump over the 770 4GB and they are a $250 cheaper and with a bit of OC they perform about similar...

I plan to build a new system in 1-2 years when haswell comes along and would be using new GPU's then too.

Agreed, limited spacing on the Gigabyte GA-EX58-UD5 [keep a close eye on temps] having a second card so close can bring temps up on the top card.

+1 MxPhenom 216; if you go the rute of GTX 770 get the 4Gb version for high res multi monitor may help a little

+1 Jack1n; Have to agree with single GTX 780 may be a better choice if you are sticking with the x58 platform and get another gtx 780 when upgrading the mobo

General Guide [these are loose as the setup is not the same]
Look here
Look here

*If and when you choose to go over to x79 keep in mind the spacing of the cards on the mobo

Only hard part is finding a quite case with good airflow..... challenge
Not sure "SLi" and "quite" go hand in hand especialy if the cards are using aftermarket coolers that tend to blow hot air around in the case rather than exhaust it out the back. More heat, requires higher speed or more efficient fans.

good luck with the build whatever you decide

nb: looking at the results at 5760x1080 I would wait to see what the next round of cards produce this year or next, as NV seem to be holding back; maybe late september after AMD release there next expected card NV will improve the GTX 780

Cheers man... hate making dissensions like this lol

When i get a haswell rig next year i will get new cards that are out then at that stage...
what ever i get now will be a handme down to my missus and she definitely wont be doing 2D surround so in real terms its only to last me a year and a half and if i can play games at 5760x1080 - 50-60FPS i think ill be happy..

2x GTX770 4GB just strikes me as a good deal in that time frame as they perform pretty well compared to a single 780..

ill think on it for another few weeks lol then make the move
