GPU : 1GB Sapphire 4870 Toxic or some other for a good gaming experience
mobo : i want a mobo that supports DDR2 n DDR3 n supports overclocking

I say dont get a motherboard the does both DDR2 and DDR3. Seems like trouble waiting to happen when OC'ing the ram to me. I own a foxconn X38A with dual ram and it will not OC my ram even close to what I can get on a straight DDR2 board.

Go DFI or ASUS if you have the funds, if not look into gigabyte and a few others.

I want with the $169 dollar screen from acer in 22" very nice IMO. but that card will deffinately hold its own on a better res than 1650X1080.

Hope that helps you narrow it down.

PSU options are so varried its frightening. get a good known maker and alot of amps on the 12V rails. Say a Corsair 750 PSU should do what you ask as well as many others.

Is $1,200 for an entire rig or just for the CPU, Mobo, GPU, PSU and Monitor? Also, what games will you be playing and at what resolution? Will you be using 64bit?

dude get a Q6600 and a asus p5k [NOT SE anything but] p35 chipsets are cheap and higher performance than other ones, shoot for 4-8gb DDR2, get a good psu and spend as much on the videocard as you possibly can.

There is no problem with the ecc. The i7 is still faster because it has an l3 cache and the 9550 doesn't.

still, even if it was 100 times faster than a Q6600, Q6600 is enough for any modern game and will be for a while, can anyone honestly say that its not worth spending the extra money saved on the most powerfull videocard possible?

atleast for gaming anyhow.

THG did a very good low, mid, and high end system configuration with pricing. Here's the link. If you want i7, mobo, cpu, and ram would set you back $700. So you have $300 left for vid card, PSU, and monitor. You can skip on sound card and reuse old case, DVD burner, and cables. I7 is not feasible for $1000 system. If I were you I would get the low config suggested on THG and add a 24" LCD. This should round out your budget to around $1000.

OC this CPU to 3.6 (typical result for Q6600 overclock) and it will be more than enough.

well... the thing is the core i7 isnt all THAT much faster, and also with it your upgrade options maybe be good, and they may be REALLY bad, only the future will tell, having the memory controller on the cpu is great, you can get alot more bandwidth easily through dual or tri channel.. but it means that upgradeing the memory interface means getting a whole new cpu, motherboard, AND memory, upgrade options on the Q6600 with a p35 are all the way up to the 45nm quad cores, and with a p35 you can get almost as much memory bandwidth as you can on the core i7 [memory bandwidth is limited by FSB, 1:1 ratio and 1066mhz ram has alot of bandwidth]

that having been said, encoding stuff is painfull... real painfull, encoding is probably the only way in whcih you would even be able to tell the difference between a Q6600 and a core i7, right now its nothing, but in 2 years there will probably be a pretty big difference, but then again, in 2 years you might have to get a new motherboard to upgrade the cpu.. might or might not, no way to know.

EDIT: i forgot to say, videocard videocard videocard. my e2140 can 0wn a core i7 if the core i7 has like a x1900... in games anyhow.

I'd say go with the i7 and a GTX260 or 280 if budget allows.

What case are you going to get? Don't forget you're going to want a good CPU cooler if you're overclocking. It would help your budget if you used your old hard-drive and monitor.

I think he means will it be the same as the stock one and will he need another to keep it cool as it's in an isolated space.

Stock cooling with overclocking is ok to an extent, but once you start to add voltage to keep the CPU stable the cooler soon shows its true colors. Deffinately if you plan to OC get a more efficient cooler as well!

Here's a quick rig I put together in an online store:

Antec 900, Asus P5QL SE, Core 2 Quad Q6600, Corsair TX650w, 1GB Sapphire HD4870 Toxic, 4GB OCZ PC-6400 DDR2, 500GB Samsung SpinPoint F1, 24" Acer P241WD, Xigmatek S1284, 2x Akasa 120mm Fans, Sony NEC DVD+RW, Logitech Keyboard & G5 which totaled $1,589.29

The same above but with: i7-920, Gigabyte GA-EX58-UD3R and 3GB Corsair XMS3 DDR3 1333MHz totaled $1,908.89.
