Techspot: Nvidia asks retailers to limit sales to miners

Simple, limit sales to two cards per person, per day.
One credit card = 1 graphics card in two week period. Actual gamers don't buy a new card every day.
With regulations like this in place, even a family with 6 PC's at home could buy 6 graphics cards in just 6 weeks (assuming they have 2 credit cards).

This ADD smells of BS just like intel or amd saying they were not affected by the recent issue's. A covering of one's ass so to speak, this then tells me the road ahead is bad looking. Miners are killing an industry, one which I love. So you all know how bad it is, I'm still running two 780Ti's(maybe i should sell them to a miner?)I haven't been able to get new one's partly to do with my heart attack but mostly cause I'm un willing to pay sky high price's period(i wont be profitting from a GPU purchase).
something needs to give, I'll walk away n find a new hobby.

While this news may seem interesting to you, to me it just smells of bullshit.

How is a retailer going to know whether a card is purchased by a gamer or a miner? I am a gamer, don't mine, but I have a family of six, and have many PCs of my own. I am a normal guy that will buy 8-10 cards at a time and upgrade my entire family.

This is simple PR alone, and that's all.

You can limit sales to 2 cards person... It's not that hard.

Why limit the on a daily basis?
GPUs will still be out of stock.

Limit 2 GPUs per person on 3 or 6 months.
That way there will be cards to buy even for gamers since miners will not be so hard on to buy out all stock.

Neither nvidia nor amd would ever block mining from their cards, at least not retroactively. There would be so many people very angry with them, from small time miners like me with a grand total of 2 gtx1070s to huge farms that take them by the pallet.

But what the story does take into account is all the money we'd make back in taxes revenue. The bigger picture needs to be kept in mind..

Maybe, but it would force miners to buy GPGPU based cards like they should anyway and it would keep gaming cards for gamers.

Like what? Tesla? Quadro? That would only make mining possible for the big players and leave little guys like me out.

How by locking the Bios so it cannot be modded and or flashed
NEITHER BRAND AND NONE OF THE AIB PARTNERS WOULD CONTEMPLATE THAT BECAUSE PEOPLE WOULD BUY FROM SOMEONE THAT ALLOWS FLASHING
Id still buy because fuck flashing a video card. More risk to brick it.

They start prescreening customers with questions...
That can easily be circumvented.

"Are you going to mine?"

"No."

"What games are you going to play with this 1080Ti?"

"Minecraft"

Like what? Tesla? Quadro?
Tesla, certainly. They could easily release a version of Tesla that has multiple tiers of performance levels, just like Geforce, but without the video output functions, which aren't needed anyway. If they release them at similar pricing levels, they could easily meet the needs of both market sectors. Quadro, not so much. Quadro cards are just tweaked and adjusted Geforce GPU's, so repurposing them for such tasks would be a wasted effort. AMD likewise could do a GPGPU version of the FirePro for mining as well. The solutions are there and right under their noses. I'd bet real money they're working on something like that as we type these messages.

I would rather they sell it to a miner at that point

They would be. Just a different type of miner.

I stand by what I said.

On another note I just got my quotes back from a distributor. They don't care what Nvidia said and would love to sell in bulk.

Well I can see why Nvidia (And AMD) probably would rather sell to gamers than miners. I wonder what the rate of failure Nvidia (And AMD) is seeing coming back to them through the AIB's and stuff. Not to mention they are not seeing an extreme amount of these up charges that are coming through as the retailers (And AIB's) are reaping more of the benefits.

I applaud them saying something but doubt anything is going to change unless they keep their website stocked with the cards at the normal prices and try to limit how many are going out.

I agree; limit sales to minors so that us old folks can enjoy gaming ..... pick a number; one number 18 or 21 ... Buy smokes, buy booze, go to war, buy video cards. Ohhhhh ... you said "miners" ; nevermind.

All you people suggesting all these "fixes" for the current situation....

Here's a fix: BE PATIENT!

By the end of this quarter, there will be more shipments. Hell, hopefully they will over-estimate demand, and we'll get GPU's cheaper than they've ever been, but for sure they'll be back to MSRP. It goes both ways.

That way everybody is happy, nobody gets features cut out of their cards (worst idea in here btw) nobody has to buy cards that are useless once they become unprofitable (which means gamers can get super cheap secondhand cards later.)

All these "fixes" people are suggesting are just shooting your future selves in the foot for some instant gratification now. Half the people railing at miners about graphics card prices, aren't even planning on buying any time soon. Prices WILL go back down.

Tesla is really expensive though, so not really an option. It sounds like what you want to see are mining cards, which are kind of already a thing, it just never took off. I'd love to pay $50 less for a "mining" card compared to the standard model, with no display output, and maybe even less than perfect hardware that works for mining but wouldn't be reliable for gaming.

in 2018 crypto currency will take a few serious knocks. It's already beginning in South Korea and as governments realise (remember - governments are run by techno luddites who know nothing) that this vast wealth is not getting taxed, they will start curbing its freedoms. Fact is (and this was from a crytpo guy talking in a financial article) crypto wealth is invisible to govt and also avoids tax. So, the security of your country, it's servants, education, health etc, this all needs funded. Crypto isn't doing that. As Papahyooie says, be patient but for other reasons.

I'm not even close to standing on the same street as an expert on crypto but I've said before, the process isn't going away. What will disappear is the gold rush, leaving us all with cheap(ish) 2nd hand cards. Give 2018 a chance to knock the reality into this craze.

Just happy I got my card when I did.

I'm not sure that is true. I suspect the inland revenue will be taking some miners to the cleaners over undeclared earnings.

In America at least, mining profits are already taxed under existing laws. They may pass some new laws that require exchanges to report people's earnings to them, which would be a huge hit to the anonymity of crypto in general. But if you make more than a certain amount of money from crypto, you are required by law to report it as income. That's already in place.

Anyone got any idea when the next generation cards are coming out lol. Because of mining I was just looking and my card can be sold on ebay for what I paid for it. Starting to think about doing that and running off a cheap card or my laptop until the next generation/mining craze drops down.

Lets face it, when board makers make EXCLUSIVE Minning boards, but the card makers state"we will be profiling people for miners" its all BS from there on.

This entire strategy is to keep video cards at a premium price point and I think it is a smart move. This will not lower prices in any form. This will not detour miners in any form. This will not increase availability of cards.

Agreed. It would seem that since they sell them at the high price why lower it? No need at all. that is just plain free marketing. The only thing is they are leaving out all of us that can not afford to pay but 150 on a card they are the ones that never get to see the high end market any way so they do not care.
