Teenager Cracks Australia's $70 Million (USD) Porn Filter in 30 Minutes

In an attempt to keep Australian minors from being jaded by the massive volume of X-rated material on the internet, Australia recently invested $70 million USD into a download-able porn filter. Unfortunately, it seems that this investment might have been a poor one. When deployed in a real-world scenario (like, say, a high school), teenagers were able to bypass the filter with relative ease, and were streaming steamy pornographic material in roughly 30 minutes.

Its not a waste of money at all. I have net nanny installed on my pc as my 5 year old daughter uses the internet all the time to play around in ABC kids etc.....

Just the other week she was playing around and tried to type aunt into google and put a "c" instead of an "a".

Just imagine what would have come up there, she would have just clicked on anything.

Imagine trying to explain that to a 5 year old.........

I think those programs are a necessity when children are using the net. Everyone can have a laugh about it but if its your child having such easy access to HARD core porn. Its only 1 spelling mistake and a mouse click away.

I agree that a level of protection needs to be made...

I think in some cases it goes too far and people do also try to hide the world from children these days and its getting worse...

Fine lines between who can handle what, and whats too much and whats not enough and it differs per person so greatly...

It is if it's a government initivative. As you said, you have NetNanny, which is entirely your choice. Governments need to stop telling us what we can and can not view (at whatever age).

If your parents don't want you to see porn until you are 15-16 then fine, but if they decided to educate you about sex etc. as soon as you are able to understand it (like I was) then that should be fine as well.

The Government has hundreds of FAR more important things to use it's money, but instead it spends it all "politicially".

The severe downside to elected officials.... They always have to do something to please the people that voted them into office instead of deal with REAL issues that people space out because its not in their face at that moment.

Porn on the net is as hardcore as it gets and it is very very easy to access. When I was a kid we used to have to steal a mag or something from the local newsagent, even then that was usually only chicks posing...

Thats not true. Net porn actually has the ability to educate teenagers about sexual positions, so even their first time they can be (relatively) good at sex and have at least an idea of wtf their supposed to do.

No I know the difference I'm not saying in Porn is something I would want my kids to be picking up on accident.

But over and above just a porn filter, I was talking about where more or less some people go overboard in attempting to shell their children from things in the world. I mean I know kids at the age of 5 that have such a rude hatred for beer, they throw a FIT if they see me drinking one... Teach a 5 year old to not drink beer alright.... Teach a 5 year old to completely hate something and not question why.... I know other parents that literally attempt to shell their children from every single piece of bad/evil in the world.... I know what happens to a lot of people like that when they see the "real" world and its not pretty...

So I think we both above were more or less comparing this to a lot of things that do shoot to over protect, although this I can completely understand myself.
