The giant information and entertainment screens in Tesla Inc.’s cars will be powered by new components from Intel Corp. after the automaker replaced chip supplier Nvidia Corp. for that function, according to people familiar with its plans.

Tesla’s Model 3 and new versions of its other cars will get the new Intel processing modules, said the people, who asked not to be identified speaking about a private agreement. Nvidia and Intel declined to comment. Tesla declined to comment.

Glad I own some Intel stock!

I wonder what "private agreement" is supposed to mean? Business decisions are not normally done by the public (share holders) but rather the CEO, COO and board of directors.

Strange news, ( note strange as im not doubting, just all these rumours or not are messy) since tesla was rumoured to be working with Amd on a custom chip for autonomous systems.
Seams like tesla has a few cards hidden at the moment and just flipped the death to nvidia card( they seamed a good fit) , it's surprising to me given nvidias Xavia is just round the corner.
So is it intel for now then custom tesla amd chip or intel ..... Full stop, either way I bet Huang is fuming thats a prestigious win they just lost.

Prestigious maybe. But in reality, not a big hit. Tesla is just not that big a car company.

It is good for Intel, however since they missed the "get in early" boat with smartphones. They also scored by making a similar agreement with BMW last year to work with autonomous (self-driving) cars which is still early in the emerging technologies.

I think being kicked off the first autonomous ish car platform might be a bigger deal than you think , if nvidia cannot keep the cutting edge happy and tesla are that cutting edge atm then who else is going to be inspired to use them.
It's akin to their Mobile ambitions it just didn't happen as nvidia planned, think tegra , potent yes in use yes but as ubiquitous as nvidia planned , no where near.

Well, Intel did announce "Ai" processors recently using stuff that actually behaves like primitive brain. Where NVIDIA's approach is more programmed using brute force. Maybe this is related...

What, fixed function neural networks vs programmable neural networks of all kinds on hardware architecture that's optimal for those kinds of algorithms?
I suppose first has one advantage interesting for vehicles, packing a minimal circuit for ultra low power  nothing may take one meter off of driving range

Ummm, first? Not hardly. Mercedes has been at it for nearly 30 years. The first truly autonomous cars appeared in the 1980s. Audi is big in it. So is GM.

It's a big PR blow, but not really a financial blow. Time will tell and it really depends on if other companies follow suit.

That said, this thread is about Tesla dumping Nvidia's "infotainment" and is not about autonomous cars. I probably should not have mentioned autonomous cars in my previous post. Sorry.

I install and support machine Autoguidance. It works better than human operators in almost every say to day operation.

We are expanding GPS real time networks that are accurate to within 2cm when combined with 3D sensors, and current satellite technology allows for 5cm accuracy anywhere in north america.

It's already happened

And it will continue to get better and better as more and more cars have it and they are able to intercommunicate - announcing to each other they are heading their way.

That's the plan for a lot of the Machinery currently. We already have some implementation of this in release. I was asked to be part of a committee that will set the standards and implementation of all of this for multiple States last week.

You better understand what a fantastic position you are in and the opportunities you have now, and that will open up to you in the future!

It reminds me of me back in the late 70s and early 80s. The DoD was spearheading this newfangled thing called local area networks and the Internet. And the Air Force was the point of that spear. I was lucky to be in the right place at the right time and showed an interest in networking and personal computers when they were just in their infancy. The Air Force had mainframe people but not LAN and PC people. I was really lucky to have a commander who recognized my interest and had faith enough in me to say, "You are now our computer and networking expert, Sgt. Bright. Take charge!"

Scared the heck out of me because my training was as a radio technician fixing UHF/VHF air traffic control tower comm systems and long-haul (HF) radio systems. With LANs being totally new, there was no one to seek guidance from. But I learned and became the very first wide area network (WAN) manager for a major Air Force base. And that experience got me a really great job when I got out of the AF.

Learn all you can and you will be able to write your own ticket as your career advances.

This made a lot of sense, and a good laugh for us back in the day:

I expected AMD, not Intel. Only explanation I got for that is Loihi. NVIDIA/AMD deep learning is basically brute force. Loihi could theoretically do the same thing with a lot less power (like milliwatts versus kilowatts). That translates to better range with Tesla's EVs.

No they didn't. Tesla is not an IT company. Partnering with one just makes sense.

Suggesting Tesla is lazy for partnering with an IT company would be the same as calling them lazy for partnering with Michelin or Goodyear instead of manufacturing their own tires.

Since this is just for the entertaining system it's basically a meh piece of news. I am much more curios about the hardware used in actually controlling the functions of the car.

Never heard of such an early attempt to autonomous driving , seems like I can't really find much details about it. Though I am skeptical that whatever system they designed was anywhere near robust enough to be practical.

I was curious how they did it considering the limitations in both hardware and theory at the time.
Hardware and theory??? Do remember that was nearly 20 years after we sent men to the moon. Radar had already been around for 50 years. Autopilot technologies first appeared in aircraft as early as 1912!

By far the biggest barriers to autonomous cars becoming commonplace are humans not willing to give up control and for many, including me, I enjoy driving, always have (for 50 years now) and likely always will. The only problem I have is idiots who don't seem to know what a red octagonal street sign means, what that little lever on the left side of the steering wheel is for, or that using a cell phone (even hands free) and driving cannot be done safely at the same time - no matter how smart and safe they think they are.

And once again another thread gets degraded with a useless post for the purpose of personally denigrating another.

Did you even bother to see what those links were in response to? No. They were in response to the comment about "an early attempt to autonomous driving".

I'm outta here.

First seen replying to me here

Me"
I think being kicked off the first autonomous ish car platform might be a bigger deal than you think , if nvidia cannot keep the cutting edge happy and tesla are that cutting edge atm then who else is going to be inspired to use them.
It's akin to their Mobile ambitions it just didn't happen as nvidia planned, think tegra , potent yes in use yes but as ubiquitous as nvidia planned , no where near"

You"
Ummm, first?

Sorry."

So you pushed autonomy into this thread ,i raised issues with it from the perspective of pr, you then tried to prove me a fool who knows nothing which i again dissagree with , without any name calling at all, we can't dissagree ???, I think we can, and honestly i meant no insult but googling an irrelevant win is no win to me.

You didn't even directly argue my pr point (you agreed yet couldn't agree with Me)just argued a tangential point to argue.
