Testing undervolting with my 5700XT

Did a few test runs today with my 5700XT reference design in Shadow of the tomb raider with different voltagesettings etc. Tested with TAA, dx12 and highest in 1080p. Custom fancurve. Temps are maxtemps.

Stock 2050/1200mv:
110fps, 185W max, 160W avg, rpm 2950, gputemp 74C, junction 93C
1900MHz/1000mv:
110fps, 149W max, 130W avg, rpm 2700, gputemp 70C, junction 81C.
1800/950mv:
108fps, 133W max, 115W avg, rpm 2300, gputemp 66C, junction 74C.
1750/910mv:
106fps, 134W max, 110W avg, rpm 2300, gputemp 66C, junction 74C.
1700/890mv:
104fps, 126W max, 105W avg, rpm 2200, gputemp 65C, junction 73C.

Conclusion:
Underclock to 1900 and UV to 1000mv gives no performanceloss, but temps are better and slightly less noise.

Underclock to 1800 only gives 3% performanceloss, but reduces powerusage by 10-15% and temps quite a bit.
Underclocking/undervolting further yields 5% lower power pr 2% performance and is not worth it in my opinion.
Seems like 1800/950mv is the sweetspot 8n my card :)

The 1900MHz/1V setup is great! I hope it is table and if so, that is the best you should run onto imho. No need to lower performance when you have those great temps without losing any speed.

Noisewise I prefer the 1800/950. There is a big difference between 2300 rpm and 2700. But will probably vary a bit :)

Tried extreme UV/underclock for fun:
1500/850mv:
96fps, 101W max, 85W avg, gputemp 64C, junction 69C, 2100 rpm.

Also compared it to my RX 580 that was downclocked to 1264@950mv with a 60fps limit. Powerconsumption was identical at max 101W and 85W avg, temp where better on RX 580 due to very good cooling.

I think the vanilla 5700 can do well in notebooks! With a slight downclock and lower volt it will consume less than 150W total.

I did some more testing in Unigine heaven at extreme preset, also retested SOTTR with 1580/935mv to test the lowest voltage possible. Added gpu-render since my i5 8400 gives the 5700XT a 15-20% bottleneck:

Heaven, benchmarkruns, wattage is avg, rpm and temps (gpu/junction) have max value:
1580@835 116fps 90W 2100rpm 63/67C
1800@940 127fps 114W 2300rpm 67/73C
1900@1000 131fps 131W 2400rpm 70/80C
2050@1200 133fps 176W 2200rpm 88/104C stock fancurve

SOTTR, gpu-renders shows there is a slight gpu-bottleneck, it disappears at 1750MHz or lower.
Stock 2050/1200mv:

1900MHz/1000mv:

A performanceloss of 13% on with no CPU bottleneck for almost half the consumption and much lower temps and noise is a good deal for me, but I will probably use the 1800@940mv most of the time :)

Wow, great job. Have to see this as promising for an upcoming "Big Navi" - even if the 5700XT at stock is relatively close to the maximum that can reasonably be cooled in a normal case (275-300W), they can likely get a lot more performance in that wattage range by going wide/big die and "slow" (1600-1700MHz). If they went that route, the overclocking potential for such a card would be very interesting too. Also, 95W average at the bottom is astoundingly low. Could make for some very interesting SFF builds if someone ever launched a card with a shorter PCB. Thanks for putting in the work :)

Amd does not report powerdraw from dram etc so the card even at 1580@835 draws 110-120W avg I guess. Still very good perfprmance pr watt.

Been experimenting some more. I found that since the ram voltage is 850mv, setting core voltage to lower is not very effective at reducing consumption. I have found that 1605MHz@850mv uses the excact same amount of Power as 1580@835mv With slightly higher performance and identical thermals. Performance is 12% below Stock setting and consumption is 40-50% lower depending on game\app.

Also tried undervolting Stock. 2050@1100mv is possible, but thermals are not good With Stock fancurve and Junction goes over 100C often. Performance got 2% better in Unigine Superposition so With a custom fancurve it is doable, but too loud for me.

After some further testing 2000MHz@1060mv is working. Average powerconsumption in Unigine heaven is 149W vs 176W stock, score is 2% better and GPU temp maxes out at 80C with hotspot at 92C.

Btw, I have also tried 1900MHz at 1000mV with great success. I want to see if I can get even lower temps.

Thing is that AMD still overvolts heavily as I show here. I did not win the silicone lottery by any means, but undervolting by - 100mv without underclocking is no problem. For many users I would recommend doing just that. For the 5700XT blower style temps and noise is too high even with UV for my liking, often hitting over 100C at hotspot. 1900 at 1000mv is a good deal for many with blower. For third party models a simple UV does the trick.

Checked now. I use 10% up to 50C, 30% at 60C, 50% at 80C and 100% at 90C.

yea I haven't quite understood the "hub bub" up in arms complaining going on about temps with these cards. They are def juiced up voltage wise from the factory, but from my small exposure to all this it seems this is a normal thing for AMD to do. the GPU clock gets up to 2025Mhz regularly at stock settings which seems higher than what AMD spec'd it at. (1906 Mhz right?) LIke the first post implies, the manual selection in Wattman suggests the clock speed is capped much higher at 2050Mhz.

I undervolted to 1875Mhz and 990mV. Power draw is usually peaked at 155W - 160W, but have seen it go to 170W. For the most demanding games temps peak in the low 70's and mid-high 80's for GPU and Junction respectively
I also overclocked the memory to 915Mhz (via the half reading slider...which means its actually 1830Mhz)

I was at 985mV for the longest time, but had say one crash every week or two on average when playing modern games like Assassians Creed Odyssey. So decided to bump it up 5mV

I have a custom fan curve that keeps it below 1950RPMs when gaming or under load. I have it so fans ramp up aggressively if temps go above 90*C though.


All this was a very similar experience with the GPU that was previously in my system, which was a Sapphire Pulse RX 580. That GPU too benefited from under volting, but much smaller under clock, like 40Mhz instead like 175Mhz

I "downgraded" from a MSI EVOKE OC RX 5700 XT to the same Sapphire Reference model. Sure, I lose fan stop and gain a louder cooler, but I don't care about sound since I use headphones anyway. The thing is the reference PCB that AMD had Sapphire (or PowerColor, whoever makes it for them) make is pretty damn good. Even Gamers Nexus' latest video says that the reference PCB is one of the best, with the ASUS Strix (60A chokes but of slightly higher quality) and PowerColor Red Devil (10+1 phases, ooh boy) rivaling it.

I will be undervolting and downclocking to reduce the heat and power consumption. As long as I can still get steady 120 FPS in PUBG (competitive settings) and Borderlands 3 (a mix of High, Ultra and Badass settings), I'll be satisfied.

Cool deal! I have had good experiences with Sapphire brand GPUs. And I hear ya on the headphones. I dont use them personally, or i should say regularly, but my system is also an audio workstation. So I have several interfaces and gear like studio headphones. I put some on while gaming the other day and thought to myself....ok so this is why people like them so much lol. All headphones I have are meant for studio tracking or monitoring so they are -25dB cancelation and I couldn't hear the computer fans at all!

I wanted to add, I should have mentioned my temps are related to gaming at 4K ultra (or max or whatever the tip top settings are called in that game)
When I lower quality to high or less, or go down to 2K at ultra, the temps are much much more modest. I don't recall what they are off the top of my head though, but its significant difference (under 80*C for junction temp). heat and power is greatly reduced ( i wanna say power peak was under 100W), so therfore the fans don't ramp up as much either. and it seems my temps are a little higher than others have reported but I overclocked vram and I think that is where my extra heat/power is coming from. I also use 2 screens. 49" 4k TV (using 4K resolution) and a 20" LCD (using 1600x900 resolution), so the dual monitor setup makes my vram run 100% all the time.

Would be cool to revisit this after a few years and see if the undervolting holds. Silicon tends to need more juice as they age. My old dog furyx could initially be undervolted by 20mV. By the time it was replaced 3 yrs after launch, ANY undervolting will cause BSOD at reference clock speed.

I just hope AMD has their crap fully together on rx 5800 xt launch day. i really want to buy one. if its a blower im passing, they should have learned their lesson by now.

With PS5 have HW raytracing coming in 2020. I would wait for RDNA2 big GPU

yep I think I will honestly. monitor tech is getting better but just not there yet, almost though. a full new rig in 2021 might do me well. I'm quite happy enjoying older games and indie games right now actually. so it's all good.

I love this thread, this is how I OC all my cards - OC + Undervolt to try to find the perfect balance of noise vs FPS.

I did some more testing in Unigine heaven at extreme preset, also retested SOTTR with 1580/935mv to test the lowest voltage possible. Added gpu-render since my i5 8400 gives the 5700XT a 15-20% bottleneck:

Heaven, benchmarkruns, wattage is avg, rpm and temps (gpu/junction) have max value:
1580@835 116fps 90W 2100rpm 63/67C
1800@940 127fps 114W 2300rpm 67/73C
1900@1000 131fps 131W 2400rpm 70/80C
2050@1200 133fps 176W 2200rpm 88/104C stock fancurve

SOTTR, gpu-renders shows there is a slight gpu-bottleneck, it disappears at 1750MHz or lower.
Stock 2050/1200mv:
110fps, gpurender 119fps, 185W max, 160W avg, rpm 2950, gputemp 74C, junction 93C
1900MHz/1000mv:
110fps, gpurender 117fps, 149W max, 130W avg, rpm 2700, gputemp 70C, junction 81C.
1800/950mv:
108fps, gpurender 114fps, 133W max, 115W avg, rpm 2300, gputemp 66C, junction 74C.
1750/910mv:
106fps, gpurender 112fps, 134W max, 110W avg, rpm 2300, gputemp 66C, junction 74C.
1700/890mv:
104fps, gpurender 109fps, 126W max, 105W avg, rpm 2200, gputemp 65C, junction 73C.
1580/835mv:
101fps, gpurender 104fps, 104W max, 95 W avg, rpm 2200, gputemp 65C, junction 71C.

SOTTR 2050->1580 -8/13% P, -40% W
Heaven 2050->1580 -13% P, -49% W

A performanceloss of 13% on with no CPU bottleneck for almost half the consumption and much lower temps and noise is a good deal for me, but I will probably use the 1800@940mv most of the time :)
So, I've tried 1800/950, but it crashed during TimeSpy stress test (temps looked fine though). I've managed to complete TimeSpy stress test (20 loop run) at 1800/960 with 99.6% score. Max gpu and junction temps were 70 and 80 respectively, at 40% max fan speed (using your custom fan curve). I won't go lower than this though, I think I'll keep 2 profiles saved: 1800/960 and 1900/1000. Again, thank you. I will see if I can tinker with mem clocks and power limit, but those are not that easy to work with like the core clocks.

Glad to hear that it worked out well for you :) There is some variance in the silicone lottery, my card is about average from what I have seen. One Lucky guy was able to run 1900 at 966mv stable, that is insane. About noise everyone has their own preferences. Around 2300rpm and higher the noise is just unbearable for me. Around 2000-2100 is fine by me. Currently I run the 1605\850mv and fans seldom spin faster than 1500rpm which is Close to inaudible in my chassis, but I also run fps-limit slightly below refreshrate of the monitor (75Hz) since there is no gain going above refreshrate. I don`t play competitive, mostly Gears 4 and SOTTR lately and inputlag With freesync is not an issue :)

After updating drivers my 5700 XT blower has downclocked/undervolted some. Max readout stock are now 1990MHz@1180mv vs 2034MHz@1200mv. Helps a bit

Tried Gears 5 benchmark and got the following: Temps and powerconsumption is max value, not avg.
1610/850mv 110W 61-67C 100fps 1700rpm
1700/900mv 124W 65-72C 104fps 1900rpm
1800/950mv 143W 68-77C 109fps 2000rpm
1900/1000mv 162W 70-81C 112fps 2100rpm
2000/1080mv 185W 72-86C 115fps 2300rpm
Stock
1990@1180mv 208W 76-91C 111fps 2100rpm

1900@1000mv basically cuts powerconsumption by over 20% and gives significantly lower temps and slightly better performance. Not bad. Still sticking with my silentsetup of 1610@850mv though, inaudible when I game with fps cap on my 74Hz monitor :)

Also tried the MorePowerTool and lower soc amps from 14 to 12, no difference at my stock UV atleast. Might make a diffetence on vrms and mem temp on higher clocks.
