Ok so a quick update, I got all the parts, got the 2700X for a bargin price off ebay with there 25% off thingy, got the MSI motherboard and I went with the G.Skill Ripjaws B-Die Memory 3600MHz and will clock it down and see how that goes.

Anyway I thought I would do a before and after gaming benchmark results on a few games just to see what increase I may get in these games.

All games are at maxed out settings at 1440P. Blur turned off Vysnc turned off, and I used Fraps to capture the FPS unless stated otherwise.

Using the old FX-8350, 8GB RAM, SLI GTX 970's.

First up Dota 2

Avg: 98.549 - Min: 62 - Max: 146

Dirt 3

Avg: 137.150 - Min: 113 - Max: 150

Sniper Elite 3 (In game benchmark)

Average 165 MAX 375

COD WWII Zombies Map (This game maxed out my RAM, was paging) Game was set to High settings

Avg: 68.760 - Min: 43 - Max: 118

Vermintide 2

Avg: 65.411 - Min: 38 - Max: 95

Nazi Army Trilogy

Avg: 142.411 - Min: 105 - Max: 206

PUBG (Set to High settings)

42 Low and a max of 61 is what I saw in game. Averaged around your 48-50Fps

Fortnite

Avg: 69.466 - Min: 42 - Max: 91 (Not sure if this set its self to 1080 when I pressed the capture button)

I'm sure it feels great, now ditch the 970 sli and get a 1080 on sale.

Definitely re-run those benches post upgrade. I have a feeling your averages will be going up and your minimums will be 55-60+ consistently. You can then blame your SLI setup for the relatively low minimums.

Sadly the 1080s are still $750 here in Australia, I dont plan to upgrade anytime soon, these 970's do pretty good all things considered.

So the above numbers are with the 2700x

No not yet, those numbers are from the old system.

I have only run Dota 2 since I got it all up and running, took a bit to get the drivers installed using only a PS2 keyboard lol

From Dota I dont think the fps is going to change much to be honest but that 2700X did run all cores at over 4GHz to almost 4..1 all the time which was nice to see.

Just a quick update, I did a BIOS update as I couldn't get the RAM clocked up to 3466MHZ without the system BSOD ing when booting. After the BIOS update its now stable at 3466MHZ, even booted into Windows at 3600MHz but wasnt 100% stable, but was impressed that it at least booted into Windows at that speed and into a game but then crashed.

Anyway when I get free time I will run those games again and get results, sadly I think my DOTA 2 results havent changed much at all, but could be wrong.

Without knowing what ya do with the PC, skipped the CPU / MoBo / RAm discussion ... but I certainly wouldn't dump the 970s for a 1080 at this time.

If anything wait a few weeks and get an 1160 ... or check 1170 / 1080 / 1080 Ti proves once 11xx drops.

Yeah I had no plans on upgrading the GPU's for a few yrs and with bills this month no way I can afford a new GPU anytime soon.

Argh I having a few issues getting this machine stable, I thought it was stable at 3466MHz but I guess not until I dropped the timings from 16-16-16 to 16-18-18. Also get my sound crashing out as well at random times, so weird.

Ok here is some benchmarks of the updated System, I havent had a chance to do all the games yet, but here is a good few of them and I will update the rest at a later date.

2700X is at stock cocks and so is the GTX 970s with all the settings the same in each game as before with the FX-8350.

RAM Timings at this stage are set at 3200MHz at 14-14-14-Cant remember lol as I kept getting BSOD's at 3466 every now and again but will follow up with results if I can get it stable at higher Mhz

First up Dota 2

Avg: 142.346 - Min: 90 - Max: 197 (A good jump over the FX-8350)

Dirt 3

Sniper Elite 3 (In game benchmark)

COD WWII Zombies Map (Game was set to High settings)

Avg: 70 - Min: 49 - Max: 107 (Not a big change, GPU limited here)

Vermintide 2 (wasnt the same lvl will retest )

Avg: 61 - Min: 45 - Max: 94 (Not a big change, GPU Limited here)

Nazi Army Trilogy

Avg: 155 - Min: 89 - Max: 293 (seems to maybe run a little better on the FX-8350? over all no big difference)

PUBG (Set to High settings)

Fortnite

Avg: 78 - Min: 52 - Max: 101 (Not sure if this set its self to 1080 when I pressed the capture button) (A jump up of 10FPS across the board)

So far if the game is indeed CPU intensive the FPS has gone up, others havent really changed that much as we are hitting GPU bottleneck.
