Interesting, it worked on my 2900 (although an earlier cat), I guess this has been "locked out" now with current Cats. What is your fan speed?

look above lol :p fan speed idlig 30%, under heavy load(furmark) 39%-45%. GPU never get more then 70c warm.

I clocked my cpu to 3500 without a singel fps upgrade in crysis benchmark. That was indeed strange. So i guess its not your mhz but something else. I have P35 chipset, ie pce 1.1. Maybe that or something.

how much memory you got btw?

@Devilduck - I can recommend Accelero S1, I still haven't mounted it, but results people are posting show it's a great cooler for 48xx series. Just put a 120mm fan on it, or two if you want a bit more extreme cooling, and that's it!

@EastCoast, mmaker & others - regarding Crysis low score - I've made it to run Crysis in XP SP3, didn't know I could use same install folder from Vista :D
So now here are the scores with above settings you've all used (1280x1024, DX9, high, bench_gpu):
45fps in Vista - 56fps XP
55fps in Vista - 59fps XP (both in 800x600, just as a test if i'm very CPU limited or not)
* all of these were run with GPU overclock of 790/1100 (even though this OC gives me just 1-2 more fps), CPU @ 3.2GHz(10x320), my DDR2 800 being on stock and pretty low CL5 (5/5/5/18)

Now that's more like it, now I can attribute the rest of fps to your higher CPU/GPU clocks, more cache on CPU, better MBO's, memory clocks and latencies, and other stuff (like my XP being hardly optimized with tons of apps on it and not being reinstalled for a year or so, having had several drivers on it without driver cleaner etc etc etc). Thanks for opening my eyes about Vista :shadedshu

11 dps different.. thank god i didnt buy vista lol

You can say that again!
Btw, you're right, it seems like two of us have lower score than EastCoast for some reason, but I don't think it's PCIe, at least not only that.
OK, you do have 5fps more than I do, and that's probably because of quad-core CPU with larger cache and higher clocked GPU.

But according to leginhardware article comparing Crossfire performance on PCIe 1.1 vs 2.0 it doesn't have that much of an advantage even in CF (in Crysis), so single cards shouldn't either, maybe just 2-3fps.
Perhaps the rest is in his systems memory bandwith, he has X38 chipset and DDR2 @ 1066, while I have just 800MHz (not sure about you). Also, his 45nm E8400 has 6MB cache (so 3MB per core) and 1333 FSB, while you have 8MB cache (but leading to 2MB per core) and 1066 FSB.
So looks like it really is a lot of things adding up one to the other..

UPDATE (PSU):
About that guy powering his system with 4870 inside, with just Fortron ATX-400PNF which should have only 5x 4-pin peripheral connectors, not even one PEG, and it's just 400W PSU, though with 2x 18A rails by the specs on official site and on PSU sticker, but costing only like 28-30€ in Europe, bit more in Croatia where I live, but probably even less if available in US.
So appears that his PSU has 5 peripheral connectors (4-pin connectors) and one SATA power, and he had connected SATA power connector to his HDD, one 4pin peripheral conn. to his optical drive, and used only 2 more 4-pin peripheral connectors for his HD4870. Yes, he was even left with 2 connectors unused! :twitch: HOW - you ask? EASY! He has Sapphire card, and it comes with two adapters looking like this in the retail box. Btw, he has exact setup like mine (except PSU ofcourse), he even has CPU clocked to 3GHz, and GPU on 790/1100. Here is his 3dmark 06 score btw, with cpuz/gpuz

here is a theory on the High end Top And Black overclocked cards ,http://www.techpowerup.com/reviews/Diamond/HD_4870/images/front.jpg

see the V-Tec chip why oh why does that look like some resistors missing? I wonder if you pulled the Top`s HS off you will see some changes? Does this V-Tec not regulate the volts ?
Reference HD4870 such as the one you linked has one vGPU phase missing.
The chip labeled Vitec (not "V-tec") is a 3-way inductor pack (current filter) - one "way" for each vGPU phase.

Create a profile and change your fan speed to 35% under load at 790/1050. Just make sure you have some AC on or have your fan pointed towards your PC. Then start Crysis benchmark program again and see if your score increases.

I noticed something irritating.
When i play games (Crysis, Grid, Ultimate Carnage, Lost Planet) sometimes the game slows down for a bit (under a second or so) and then it gets back to a normal state. The games run just fine but these tiny moments of slowing down are so frustrating and really piss me off.
I'm using Vista ultimate 64bit and catalyst 8.7 WHQL.

Anyone know how much voltage I would have to increase on this 4850 to hit 700mhz? Anyway I just increase the volts through RBE?

Benchmark Scores AMD/ATI 4870 running @ 860/1000 MHz (for now) 3DMark Vantage (P6838, GPU: 8573, CPU: 4255)
Just to clarify. Situation is real weird, cos I get stuttering that lowers fps as observed during benchmark run, but final scores are about the same, as if there's no stuttering. So I could say that 3DMark doesn't exactly measure those stutters and it's not visible in scores.. But when running, I get like 25fps, and when stutter appears it's for a moment on 13-15 or something like that. I've tried with and without GPUZ, and stutters appear, but score remains pretty much the same (only few points difference, which is never the same anyway). I do agree with nafets, it looks like polling of the sensors, as it's pretty much every second.. I think you have to check the option in GPUZ saying something like "poll even when not in focus"

As for my PSU, it has only one PEG, but I've used one 2x 4-pin to one 6-pin PEG adapter, and it works. Here are a few pics, perhaps it will make things clearer :D First one is adapter cable, second one is a closeup with me holding cables, clearly you can see 2x peripheral connectors on "Y" adapter going to one 6-pin PEG, and second PEG is directly from PSU, last pic is same as one before, but you can see it's the "right" card, soooo..it's not me having fantasies :D
; ;

On the other hand, I had huge troubles with getting a new PSU for my wifes brother cos these adapters weren't packed with cards, are pretty much impossible to buy somewhere, and I just had one.. so in the end we had to buy a new PSU for him (550W version of Chieftec that I have, with 2 PEGs).
There is one guy on another forum powering his system with 4870 inside, with just Fortron ATX-400PNF which should have only 4 4-pin peripheral connectors, not even one PEG, so I'm waiting for his reply how he did THAT magic :D When I get an answer I'll make sure that I post it here as well, cos that PSU costs like 60-65$ where I live, probably more like 45$ in US by the usual "european-to-american-prices-conversion-rates" :D EDIT: Updated info over here!

HEy man! I've just noticed you've said it gives you 1200 IN RBE. It says 1200 even for my stock BIOS (Club 3d as well). Could you check what Catalyst says? I think RBE is reading it wrong.. Other guy confirmed his Club3D (with ASUS bios) has 1100 clock in Overdrive (Catalyst)

I use Cat3.7 (not beta). In other programs I get 1100, just RBE.

@LuxZg

My psu dont have any PEGs either, you dont need 2x 4 pins connectors to those adapters. Just use one 4x pin to each adapter.I tried with 2 and it doesnt make any differents at all. Tried in benchmarks etc.

edit: a nvm saw you edit your earlier post..

Should need none, but if you do, just in the 3D clock tables type in "1.2" or higher, 1.2 is the max, but I like to type in 1.25 to be sure:laugh:

Hi, i was just wondering how you can count what voltage you have? Ive done the 2nd pencil mod, the one where you draw on the PCB, and i went from 5.12 to about 4. My multimeter always jumps from like 1.3 to 1.4, so i dont know my exact voltage. So, is there a way to calculate what voltage my core is getting by having the ohm? Thanks in advance!

Edit it like so:

That will give you 700/1050, 1.2v. 2D will be 160/500 with 1.0v.
