In all fairness yes, I'd say for the 'current day' style of Fallout, Fallout 3 still holds the crown.

But many people will say New Vegas was also really strong. I didn't really like it.

New Vegas has my vote.

Fallout 76 will require a persistent internet connection. My understanding is it is like the Elder Scrolls Online of Fallout.

The problem with Fallout 3 is that weapons generally suck and ammo is relatively scarce. Unless you're using the sniper rifle, you really have to use VATS to aim/shoot or you'll miss. In New Vegas/Fallout 4, VATS is optional.

As far as Fallout games go? Id say Fallout 3 or NV. But as an open world game... Fallout 4.

Big fan of Fallout 3 and New Vegas... but ever since I started with 4 I dont know if i could sit through 3 again. It feels so clunky to me now.

I think if you've never played any of them, maybe start with 3. NV would be a good choice too.

Fallout 2. The only "modern" Fallout that is an actual Fallout game is New Vegas, the rest is just fan fiction. Fallout 4 is an abomination, it's the only game so bad it actually made me angry ... and I can say I went into it with the lowest of expectations.

Same here , New Vegas. Recently replayed fallout 3 and now nv, weapon handling is much better in the latter.
Though overall the wasteland still feels large and hostile. A feeling of walking without an end to get somewhere, in contrast with fallout 4 where around every corner there appeared to be a building or settlement.

New Vegas. Imo, it's the best of both worlds. Bethesda's 3d knowhow, but Chris Avellone was still working on Obsdian at the time NV was made.. and he was the original FO2 lead. Also just for being more openended than FO3/4.

New Vegas has better "stories" but I think fallout 3 had a better atmosphere in DC.

Fallout 2 and New Vegas. Of the modern ones, NV is the only one really that feels like the originals, despite being more a shooting rpg. 3 is ok, and without that clunker happening we may not have gotten NV.

Another vote for Fallout: NV. Fallout 4 was a terrible experience for me. Attempting settlements, which I didn't even like the concept of...or opening locks...as a left hander in Fallout 4, not really possible. Killed the game for me. I tried to like it four times...:). I actually just loaded up Fallout 3 GOTY because I was getting burned out on NV and thought I'd give it a rest for awhile. Fallout 76? Wouldn't even consider it....the game doesn't fit my play style.

One thing I really missed in New Vegas and loved about Fallout 3 though were the underground tunnels/trains/sewers. Every time I go back for another round of FO3...I relish every moment and don't hesitate to get lost and stumble around for days.

Same goes for the Dwemer ruins in Skyrim.

NV get my vote, i can't remember i had any issues with that,

I like the idea of fallout 4 but the game doesn’t Work that well and main history is short.

The only thing that I remember was hard was to kill a Deathclaw in fallaut 3 :)

I don't think there a best Fallout game per se. They all have their strengths and weaknesses and which one appeals to you best depends on what you like in a game.

Fallout 1/2 are pretty much separate from the newer ones and close to each other. Isometric, turn-based, heavily focused on RPG, speech etc. However, when comparing the two Fallout 2 has a much more humorous (and occasionally ridiculous) take on the story and society. Fallout 1 still had its (fairly dark) humor throughout but Fallout 2 cranked it up a notch or five. Also, Fallout 1 had a much more deserted and desperate world compared to (re)established civilization of Fallout 2.

While games themselves are different, a lot of it applies to comparing Fallout 3/4. Fallout 3 is and feels a lot more empty and deserted with settlements and characters clearly struggling to get by. World in Fallout 4 is effectively a booming city with stone's throw from one settlement to another. Less devastated state of Capital Wasteland underlines that clearly. I would not discount either by any means though. While Bethesda has their shortcomings, they are incredibly good at creating coherent and living worlds.

Fallout NV is the odd one out. There are gameplay mechanics and concepts borrowed from old Fallout games, story is better written and more competent, offering more choices etc. This generally appeals more to fans of Fallout 1/2 and other RPGs than Fallout 3/4 with their move towards 3D shooter/adventure game.

LOL, good instincts!

Mine has always been to get high up, at maximum rifle range. Then it’s a slow and methodical use of my ammunition to take them out ( there’s usually more than one).

Fallout 2 was challenging but fun. Fallout NV was a ton of fun. Fallout 4 is a broken mess. Fallout 3 is good with mods...which is needed to make gunplay less garbage.

That's difficult to say. I first played FO3 and it was great. When I tried New Vegas, it overwhelmed me because there were so many choices and it was so open that I couldn't bring myself to decide on how to play. So I took a break by playing Skyrim instead. Did NV afterwards, and it was great too.
So far the one I've been really hooked on is Fallout 4 - I've been playing it without turning to other games since the date of release. Obviously I started new characters, then added graphics mods and a lot of quest mods... then building, and adding building mods. What you can achieve is nearly unthinkable! Here's some stuff I did in Fallout 4 as a way to 'relax' in-between actively playing the game!
One thing is sure - I'm gonna miss settlement and building mods in Fallout 76!

I have fallout 4 on a SSD and the load times are abysmal, I think I'm half way through the main campaign. I don't care for the the whole settlement thing or having to constantly use the work benches.

Mama Murphy's Cosy Cove. I like that...:).

BP reminded me of how much fun I was having in Fallout 4 until I realized the game was broken for lefty's. I may actually give it another go some time and just blow off the settlements. You can do that? Right? Wouldn't mind just exploring around until I've at least checked the whole game out. I have to tell you it was utter frustration(game breaking) trying to place something as simple as a generator...and not being able to move at the same time.

IF there are any left hander's out there that worked around or solved this problem...please shoot me a pm.

I'm not a lefty so apologies if I don't seem to understand. But I'm curious to know what type of problems you had because I used to think that as long as one had a lefty or omni mouse it should be ok?

Nothing to do with the mouse. To put it simply...in workshop mode? Once you're in workshop mode, you can't move...period. Bethesda also doesn't allow you to remap the keys so you can. I never found a workaround. The last time I tried was six months ago, maybe somebody came up with something since then? Also, like I mentioned...if you're going to open a lock, I have to flip over to WASD because the arrow keys don't work for that either. Which I find to be bizarre. They work in Skyrim, Fallout 3, and NV?

Like I said...if anyone can find a solution...you have a new best friend.

:),

EDIT: I'm in the middle of cooking, so while I was chopping some vegetables on the cutting board...I was trying to think of a good example at how tedious it is to not be able to move while in workshop mode and I came up with this. When I was with the minutemen, we took over a fort...during the transition I was supposed to get some radio transmitter up and running by pulling a power cable from the wall to the radio tower. Instead of simply just crafting a power cable and running it over from the wall to the tower...about 25'. I had to put 4 poles in between. Because I had to stop every 5 feet, go into workshop mode to produce the items...since I couldn't move. Then move 5 another feet...rinse and repeat. Another example was to assign a person to a certain task...by the time I pushed V(I think) so I could assign that person to the specific task I had in mind...they'd walk away and I'd have to chase them down and hit V again. Not too mention...how would it be possible for me to walk them over to the task I wanted them to be assigned to? Bizarre, I tell you...bizarre. I surely tried, that I can guarantee you! ;).

I have fallout 4 on a SSD and the load times are abysmal, I think I'm half way through the main campaign. I don't care for the the whole settlement thing or having to constantly use the work benches.
Mmm... I had that same problem. It got to the point where it took several minutes for every single loading screen.

You probably need the load accelerator mod. Just follow the directions. You need to make a slight ini modification.

Not sure why but load time is tied to frame rate, so vsync starts to murder load times as you go on and the game has more to keep track of.

Another thing that seems to help is stopping steam from uploading saves and whatever to the cloud. Seems to like trying to upload while loading. This fixed eternal elevators for me.
