I want to upgrade my gigabyte windforce gtx 770 oc 4gb. (don't try to make me wait for the new cards from nvidia)

I want a card from asus, gigabyte or msi a gtx 780 or R9 290X there is not really a diffrence in the price where i would choose one over the other cards.

The Msi R9 290X is loud under load (41db) gigabyte gtx 780 is loudest of the 3 gtx 780 under load and might also be that in the R9 290X version, asus get's 94 celsius hot in Quiet mode under load (close to the limited and fell it's to much heat)

Gtx 780 Msi is most quiet in idle but the same in load as the asus card with the new bios, msi is also just slightly faster then the asus gtx 780, but not by much.

So i come to the conclusion it's a gtx 780 from asus or msi.

What should i get?

I play games like boarderlands 2,bf3-4,bioshock 1-inifinite, crysis 1-3, skyrim, tomb raider and racing games like track mania nations forever, need for speed, grid racedriver, dirt 3 and other racing games (my monitor is 2560x1080)

Yup I too would get an r9 290x (also as a gtx 780 owner)

Personally I'd probably get a Sapphire tri x 290x.

But which one, the Asus R9 290X in quiet mode is close to the 290X temperature limited of 95 celsicus (94 celsius),in performance mode the card is cool but loud, i like a quiet card.

Gigabyte i don't know how quiet it is because techpowerup hasn't reviewed it, in load the Gigabyte gtx 780 is louder then the cards from asus and might also be that in the R9 290X version.

All other R9 290X is more expensive then the R9 290X from Asus,Gigabyte

You might not like passmark but the say a gtx 780 is much more powerfull then a R9 290X

Quite simply, Videocardbenchmark is wrong... Benchmarks mean literally nothing when it comes to gaming.

The Tri-X. I've seen a lot of people choose that card over all the rest, I get the impression it's a very balanced performer.

Why would I sell a card I paid £550 for, get about £250 from the sale, and then spend a further £100 for 2 FPS performance increase? No sane person would sell a 780 and buy a 290X. It is an impractical decision. If I was buying from scratch, I would buy a 290X, because they have a higher performance per dollar. You are buying with a larger upgrade in mind.

That's like asking me why I don't just sell my 4670 and buy a 4690K. Sure it's an upgrade, but it's a pointless waste of money for the performance increase.

I am a reviewer... what I have in my rig is the flavor of the day. Right now, I am running a 295x2 (2 290x's on one PCB). I sold the 780ti in the classies here yesterday.

To me though, to own a 780 and upgrade to a 290x is asinine. The gains are not worth the cost of that upgrade. However, in your case, a more significant jump is happening.

Asus R9 290X still outperforms the sapphire in bf 3 and crysis 3 not by much but in all resolutions, in denmark where i live the asus card is about 45-50€ cheaper and 5 db more quite in load the only downside is the 94 celsius (both in the stock oc and additional oc'ed version)

So you bought your gtx 780 before the R9 290X (non reference) was released?

Have read, seen some reviews and there is infact a diference of about 10% in favor off the R9 290X in crysis 1 and 3.

Asus gtx 780 bf3 106/65 crysis 69/45 crysis 3 40/24 (1920x1200,2560x1080)

Asus R9 290X bf3 119/71 crysis 76/52 crysis 3 45/27 (1920x1080,2560x1440)

Yep, I bought my 780 on release day. I would say that's pretty stupid, but sometimes being one of the first adopters has a special kind of excitement that's worth the cost.

So the question is should i get the Asus R9 290X despite the high temperatures under load when the fans are in quiet mode (can i make a fan profile using msi afterburner like i do with my gigabyte gtx 770?) or mabye the gigabyte R9 290X? (is it also loud under load as it is in the gtx 780 version?)

Most 290x's run hot as hell under load... And in the 90's is, scary, but acceptable. Yes, you can create a custom profile.

I think you should buy my MSI 290X Lightning! Quiet as a church.

No it's not, it's as loud or louder in idle then the quiet cards are in load

It looks as though MSI focused only on keeping temperatures low by completely ignoring the cooler's noise levels.

We'll unless you game with the card strapped directly to your face, I can tell you from PERSONAL experience (as I own the card and am not relying on info posted online) With that card in your standard case (two side panels), idle and under load, it is an extremely silent card.

Good luck with your search.

Asus DCUII's have always been known for their cooling performance and silent operation. I'd buy one of those and have at it.
MSI's seem to have "leaky" fans. They say it was fixed, but some users still have the oil leaks.

if you want it cool and silent, full loop or buy the cheapest 290x, slap an AIO like the H80i or whatever AIO, boom, silent with performance....

Have my gtx 770 set to minimum fan speed up to 85 degrees and at 85 starting to get much faster 90 degrees fan spins at 50% and 100 degress 80%

Never had it at 90 degress max 87-88 degrees

Here here!!!! I owned one as well and it was quiet as hell......

Its funny you set your fan speed to a speed OVER what the card throttles itself at... (they throttle at 85C). HOnestly, if you want silence, perhaps you should look into water cooling. ;)
