I'm still considering a 1070 or 1660ti but I'm going to throw a dagger in the dark and ask would a Vega 56 be worth it? Pre-owned at $400 but I'm not too sure on the output, another thing is the power consumption. Would my 550w psu be enough? Just another option, that is all.

So the Vega 56 is a little over the 1070 in terms of performance. I have one and the specific card you have will make or break your happiness. Personally, I would stay away as 4 bills for a used V56 would make me puke. For what it's worth, AC:Odyssey, I am well below Ultra on my V56.

Honestly, I would cut down on as many extra expenses as I could and save up for the next level. Anything below the 2060 and I feel you will regret it. Maybe Navi will bring a price cut in a month or so but I wouldn't hold your breath.

I second that. If you're going to wait, wait to see what impact Navi makes.

how about 8 or 6 gigs of memory.. does anybody put a value on that.. ??

Not at 1080 or even 1440p .... you can look at the TPU testing on the 3 GB and 6GB 1060s which makes it irrefutably clear. You do have to account that the two cards differ by more than the memory count , the 6 GB has 11% more shaders and that gives the 6 GB model a clear advantage. That advantage will be consistent regardless of resolution. So to see where memory has an impact, as you go up in resolution, it's a given that, as soon as that performance gap widens, then memory is being a limiting factor.

The 1060 6 GB has a 6% advantage over the 3 GB model at 1080p ... so if we move to 1440p, and memory has any impact whatsoever, the 3 GB model will have to lose ground to the 6GB

It doesn't ... the performance difference between the 3 GB a.d 6GB model remains at 6% .... when you do to 2160p, it does widen significantly, In short:

Does 3 GB versus 6GB matter ?

At 1080p = No
At 1440p = No
At 2160P = Yes

I don't see much of a difference between very high and ultra and in some cases no difference at all but I'm getting older and maybe my eyes just don't see as clearly as they used to.

I don't see much of a difference between very high and ultra and in some cases no difference at all but I'm getting older and maybe my eyes just don't see as clearly as they used to.
cause there is no big difference.

here's what I proritize:

ambient occlusion-usually go highest possible cause it's one of,if not the most, important setting for a lot of games, the main factor contributing to the realistic look of objects and environments imo.

anti aliasing - super important for me to have detailed image with no jaggies, same as above, very important for the realistic look of environment
textures

level of detail - very important, though does not always need to be on ultra, after a certain point you get a huge performance hit for what does not increase the image quality where you'd see it anyway.

vegetation/terrain settings - usually go with max possible, though I will say that for vegetation: high/very high setting with higher antialiasing usually produces a better effect than max setting with some basic aa.that's why I mentioned aa as one of the main factors - the amount of objects it affects is too big to treat it as of secondary importance.

for terrain it's just important to have it cranked up to the max cause it's where you vision is focused.the more tesselation and detail the ground gets, the better.

here's what I think about other settings - like screen space reflections, shadows and volumetric effects.we got to the point where the devs are getting them to ridiculous levels.take ssr - at max lot of power is going to producing a sharper reflection, and while it costs a lot of power the effect is usually not that visible over just high/v.high or just having them on.such is the nature of reflections - they are in constant change.is there any point in making them super crisp if it costs you a lot performance? shadows - a lot of the times ultra shadows means they're just very crisp and accurate,to the point where it costs you a noticeable chunk of performance to produce a bit sharper and detailed shadow of a screen object that'd you only see in static image and you'd have to look well.volumetic effects are the most ridiculous of all, cause the performance hit for what you get in return ratio is the worst.

ssr at high, shadows at very high and volumetric effects just on - that's the best combination for me.you're getting a lot of your pefrormance back, and it's exactly where you won't notice much iq degradation if any.you're not actually missing anything, just making it a bit less accurate.the performance uplift may be huge at the same time.

It's definitely much, much more important to have more detailed objects and environment than their reflections and shadows, where you can absolutely make some sacrifices and not even notice them.

Exactly why RTX is going to take a while...'regular' graphics have so much further to go...why are we worried about shadows and reflections that are so good enough now....you can put them on low and not miss anything...but I digress

The rule has always been buy the very best you can afford so you don't have to do it again next month...

Just starting this up again quickly. But for the reason of pc cases. I'm currently using a pretty basic office desktop case and would like to upgrade it as everything within is on a tight fit and I would also like to expand my gpu capabilities when I do buy one. My maximum length is 280mm currently and even that is a tight fit. I've looked into a couple but one that stands out because of its sale price $49 AUD is the Gamdias Argus e1. Does anyone know anything about this case? Otherwise I've been looking at a cougar MX 340.
