Neverwinter Nights and Age of Empires 2. Not even Dragon Age is as good as NwN. It still has an extremely active mod community going. All other RTS pale against AoE2.

Well, Fallout 3 ruined my experience of the Fallout world from parts 1 and 2...

As for games that set my standards:
RPG's: Fallout 1/2, Final Fantasy 8 (I played 7 later and couldn't stand the graphics anymore), can't stand medieval-themed RPG's
FPS: Dark Forces 2: Jedi Knight including Mysteries of the Sith, Counter-Strike <=1.5, Unreal Tournament '99
Co-op multiplayer: Currently Borderlands, 4 man co-op campaigning
RTS: I don't like RTS. Total Annihilation was the relative best in conservative RTS gameplay. Star Wars: Rebellion was a good strategy game though, I liked that.

FF4-FF2
FF5-not released
FF6-FF3

Starting with Cloud & Co. the names are the same already. The previously unreleased games were re-released this decade. If you want to play all the main characters (and "main antagonists") play Dissidia. :p

So FF6 was FF3? Damn those Japs. Anyway if you ever have a chance play FF3. I ain't kidding. Its an awesome game man. Think Chrono Trigger.......but better.

The winner has to be Quake. I still play it today pretty often, it's also the game that made me buy my first 3D accelerator card (3Dfx Voodoo) and I bought it basically only for Quake.

Quake 2 as well, awesome game. I remember playing duels and people sitting around watching and waiting for their turn and chatting, proper community. I played a lot of Q3A too but somehow it never felt as good as the first two, I still play Quake Live sometimes but I think the weapons are a bit too balanced and it feels a bit sterile.

Half Life 2 for one of the best singleplayer FPS experiences ever, it's really aged well like Quake.

Now I have to also say... MW2. It's a really good game. The singleplayer is excellent, unfortunately short but excellent. The multiplayer is good too, except for IWnet and a few noobish weapons which is a BIG shame. That said, when the host is decent and there are no G18/tuber noobs it's a really fun game.

The other thing about MW2 and many other modern games which is sad is the lack of user generated content and community. With MW2 they basically killed the mapping scene just because they wanted to sell a bit of DLC down the line.

I really think there is currently still a huge void for a contemporary FPS that will unite the PC FPS community. Right now there is BC2 but even so, as far as I am aware there no are mapping/modding tools for it. So I guess I'm still waiting...

EDIT: that last bit is slightly off topic but hey... :)

Thanks for the reminder! I think one or both of those games are available for download from the PSN. I may have to look into it.

Only the first one is available for download. :)

LOL! Modernwarfail...

Seriously though everyone says that but I think it's more because of what it *should* have been and general hatred towards IW/Bowling. I bet half the devs on MW2 didn't even want it to turn out how it did. It's still a good game, just with some rather serious and shameful flaws. Even ignoring MP, the SP and special ops were pretty good IMO.

Not the game it should have been - yes, sooo much. Not at all enjoyable? Far from it.

for the DotA guys, have you tried League of Legends? DotA/LOL are made by the same creators. it suited me much better than Heroes of Newerth did. Oh, did I mention its entirely free?

Yes, I've been playing it for 3 weeks now. It's fun but it has a few flaws.
+ completely free, but with support for minitransactions
+ summoner/runes/masteries
+ statistics
+ reconnecting
+ nice graphics (compared to dota, which is of course limited to the warcraft 3 engine)
finally widescreensupport :)
+ XP/IP/RP system
+ new refreshing heroes with more or less unique capabilities (although some heroes have recycled abilities), but some will get reworked like dota eventually I think
+ ninja's!
+ buffs from creepkilling
+ baron (rosh) is really strong and needs a whole team to defeat, not just a big jungler/overfed guy.
+ tower/creep attack algorithme
+ hero rotation
+ in usual games, it's hard to have one overfed guy that ruins the game (in dota I knew people who just jungled a whole game long, buy rapiers and pwn the game)
+ even though I have fps drops in big teambattles, it still runs decently most of the time, but it has a lot of room for improvements
+ options for framerate cap (eg. stable, high, benchmark)
+ room for more maps

- matchmaking is complete crap, fighting against lvl 30 summoners all the time is a bit unfair for me. Finding people of the same lvl (10-20) is hard.
- after reconnect things are always screwed up (item/ability icons changed, ghost minions,..)
- lol-europe is broken (so I heard), so we play on US servers with 200 ping (mostly I don't notice though)
- random crashes at shop (after buying health potion and pressing escape)
- big fps drops on low/mid-range hardware (I have up to 90 fps, but sometimes it drops under 20 no matter what settings)
- adobe air/flash, wtf are they thinking? running cpu on 30-50% for the game client(not the game itself) only >_< I mean, java would have better performance :p
- one of my friends can't disable vsync on both his laptops (i7/ati - cd2/nvidia) (crash if he does)
- only 2 maps! (double of dota :p)

I think that covers most of it. I haven't played HoN yet, so I can't compared it to HoN.
Overall LoL is a great game that needs some improvements, but I'm sure those improvements will come :)

---

Shooter: UC2 for xbox was one of the best games ever (gameplay), too bad the network code was totally screwed up, it had too much competition of halo 2 at the time and was hard to master (halo 2 was far easier to pick up)
never played a game of the same genre that blended both shooter/melee the same balanced way

strategy: RA1, I completely hate RA3

RPG: (mature) Morrowind: played it on my xbox till it was too big to load properly :p ; (childhood) Pokemon!, azure dreams was also fun, but had too many limitations

Adventure/puzzle: Zelda series
