Stardock has created The Gamer's Bill of Rights as a means to encourage game industry as a whole to adopt standards that support PC gamers.

The Gamer’s Bill of Rights:

1. Gamers shall have the right to return games that don’t work with their computers for a full refund.
2. Gamers shall have the right to demand that games be released in a finished state.
3. Gamers shall have the right to expect meaningful updates after a game’s release.
4. Gamers shall have the right to demand that download managers and updaters not force themselves to run or be forced to load in order to play a game.
5. Gamers shall have the right to expect that the minimum requirements for a game will mean that the game will play adequately on that computer.
6. Gamers shall have the right to expect that games won’t install hidden drivers or other potentially harmful software without their consent.
7. Gamers shall have the right to re-download the latest versions of the games they own at any time.
8. Gamers shall have the right to not be treated as potential criminals by developers or publishers.
9. Gamers shall have the right to demand that a single-player game not force them to be connected to the Internet every time they wish to play.
10. Gamers shall have the right that games which are installed to the hard drive shall not require a CD/DVD to remain in the drive to play.
11. Games should not be optimized to run on certain brands of hardware only.(TPU Community, Thanks Mussels)

Wow, most of the newer games out there now are mini trogans anyway, especially MS live games. There was a time when most of this was in effect by default, but time itself has messed that all up.

1 - really good idea, but the reason they dont let you return an opened PC game is because of pirating.
2 - Damn right! blizzard is pretty good at that.
5 - Very good, i used to have that problem back in the day "400MHZ req my aZZ, i cant play it lowest settings with my 700MHZ amd!!!"
8 - Bioshock, anyone?
9 - Bioshock, Half-Life 2, anyone?
10 - Warcraft 3 and Doom 3 are games that fall under this category.
This is a very good list, i only disagree with #1, only because I like to keep the PC gaming industry strong, at all costs, and this is a necessary sacrifice...

#1 is the only one i can argue with, because a person should have read the requirements before purchasing. It should only be returnable if the requirements are misleading, and thats covered in #5

most of these "rights sound" good. for the most part i agree with 3870x2, there are just to many pirates out their that keep the pc gaming industry from growing.

Another things i think they should have added is "no more single company optimized games" im tired of games that play well on one system just because they have a certain brand card.

so, most of it is about piracy...
well, too bad none of us own any intellectual property and we have no idea what its like when people "steal" from under our noses...
I'm not saying piracy is right or wrong, all I want to say is that people view things differently. So, if one company decides to protect its property, then its their right to do so. If you don't like their ways, then don't do business with them. Plain and simple, just like it should be!

I have had intellectual property stolen from me. sure it was low value compared to the games industry, but it sucks.
the problem with your idea a111087, is that consumers arent aware of these things and its killing the gaming industry - as the source link states most consumers cant even understand the minimum requirements on the games box, therefore they dont buy PC games out of fear they cant return it.

ok, i'm here not to troll so, i will not argue with you guys
just find someone who owns a substantial amounts of intellectual property and ask them how they feel when their only way of providing is constantly in question

dont worry about that man, you said you havent been in that situation, so how can we expect you to agree with us blindly?

The point is, none of these 'solutions' work as intended (no returns on open disks, malware to prevent piracy, etc) - they're useless short term solutions when a long-term approach is needed.

As a good example, i know lots of people who used to pirate nod32 and kaspersky - once i showed them keys on ebay for $10, they leaped on it and stopped pirating. Why? because the $90au price they asked was too high, yet $10 was considered a bargain. In todays digital world, they just need to drop prices to wipe piracy out.

yes, i agree, almost every game has a crack today, so all these protections are quite useless

there are cracks for STEAM and there are cracked servers
so, the best protection for a game is to not be known to human beings

oh yeah, despite the fact i own many legit steam games (which i can prove if people demand it) i actually have cracks for it, for those times i have no internet connection and it decides it doesnt like me.

anything that can be made as a copy protection, someone can work around. Its simply not possible to make something that cannot be cracked, in the PC world.
