Now we just need to see 5970 crossfire vs 480 tri-sli so we know what to use for super builds. My guess is tri-sli due to better scaling.

That will be a battle of which scales worst :shadedshu
Chances are the GTX 480 tri-SLI will win because the 5970 wins the worst scaling trophy.

So glad that the 295 still passed it up on some tests -- but dang, didn't know the 5970 was so good!

The GTX 295 are 2 down clocked 275s, and the 5970 you are talking about 2 down clocked 5870s :p

Except in both cases, you are only taking up 1 slot. and is 2 275s roughly the price of 1 295? I dunno :S

Tri SLI wins for sure, because you get great FPS and a stove top to cook eggs on. Win!

I am talking about what these cards actually are. ;)
The GTX 295 are made of exactly the same chips as 2 GTX 275s are made of, but only reduced in clock speeds.

Funny how the people harping on about it been ok/better/better scaling in sli are the ones with nvidia cards, coincidence or the f word mmmmm.

Maybe they just read reviews, which show 5970 crossfire being moronic. Often times you get less performance than a single 5970, and when it works you get like 2 more fps. Getting a second 5970 is one of the best ways to waste money.

Grabing anything beyond dual-gpu is "moronic" either way, multi-GPU just often tends to scale like shit from 3 GPUs and up.
Right now the GTX 480 in SLI doesn't scale much either.

What I hate about HardOCP is that they always use different settings for the cards. :shadedshu

Tbh i think any who spends $1000 on graphics cards is moronic and a waste of money.Just for epeen imo.How many people actually game at 2560x1600? i bet i can count it on my fingers and toes.

And i am not counting eyefinity either as you dont need to spend $1000 to do that,or do you.If i am wrong on that count i will happily admit it.

4 months of waiting for bad heat... Terrible prices... And bad FPS...

ATI wins this round

Its faster, its faster, and oh, its faster. Interesting how you think they can win the round by being slower.

Ok, analogy time. They made a car, it's fast, but it always kills the driver. Hence nobody uses it to win races unless they're cyborgs, and only the very rich and powerful are cyborgs.

You can't do a f*cking thing with these cards except run them a little over stock. For competitions the 1.4GHz core on LN2 5870s are going to WASTE the Fermi cards in performance. How is Fermi faster when it can't go as fast without becoming a fireball?

I guess you will be buying a gtx470/80 then

I'm really undecided on what to do for my next card, partly because I'm unsure how much I'm going to spend. I am leaning more towards nvidia because I could use the extra ram in GTA as a I do a shit load of flying. Really bugs me it's been 6 months and ati still doesn't have a 2 GB card out, announced plenty, but still none that can be bought.

I really impress with GTX470, some time it beat HD5870.
It cheaper than hd5870, but it hot and power hungry.
Some simple calculation:
If i use the card about 1 year and 6hrs gaming+8hrs idle per day, then
GTX470 + Electric bill > HD5870 + Electric Bill
I think hd5870 still good choice

And you think eyefinity displays that run at 5670x1080 don't take extra horse power?

You try running any DX11 title in eyefinity and tell me how low you have to set the detailled settings to get 30 FPS with a single card...

And good luck SLIing any of the new fermi cards...several sites are showing 850W power draw in SLI...HAHAHAHAH Your gonna need a 1200W PSU...and the thing consumes 100W more at idle than a pair of HD 5870s

Ok, I asked in the tpu review thread, but with the current clustefudge that's going on in that thread, my question was skipped over.

Ok, my question, 480 or 5870? Power consumption and heat are absolutely non-issues for me, as I have a 1250w psu, and I water cool. I do quite like some of the available CUDA apps as well, but they aren't 100% necessary.

As power consumption and heat are the only downsides of the GTX, 480 of course, if you can find a block for it that is.

I'm guessing I can get my MCW-60 to fit.

The 5870 is $80 cheaper tho. Is the 480 worth $80 more? (Provided I can come up with it to begin with. lol.)

That's actually a hard call, the 5870 jumps up a lot from a good overclock.. but the 480 GTX would probably be faster even still if you can get it past 800/1600. That and I guess the extra 512 mbs must be good in some scenario.

I believe the GTX works better in higher demanding titles, and I'm sure there will be better supported titles for this 4-cluster design.

That's the problem I'm having. Although a 2GB 5870 (when they release) is also mighty tempting. Also, who is going to be ahead in most DX11 titles?

And lets be honest, I may have more than enough psu to handle it, but how will it effect my power bill?

It's just such a tough call for someone in my position.

if your whole system draws like 800Watts, extra 100Watts gives like 12.5% higher consumption.
