I think In this case - the industry doesnt know any better - the 'battery life' argument has been a debatable issue for a long time coming & it just so happens that nobody was talking because most Consumers dont know any better & will accept most things at face value rather then questioning those who are responsible. & thats the reason why the issue was never bought up. I think HP triggerd AMD into a mudslinging war - after all they did just announce they were selling an optional battery upgrade that was garanteed to last 3 years tops with no degradation. maybe AMD has something against HP??

another thing is - consumers dont know how to look after the batteries on the laptop properly often resulting in the battery degrading a lot quicker then it would normally have.

everyone has a part to play in this issue - stupid consumers who accept everything at face value & a dishonest industry full of morons that wouldnt even tell you what time of day it is.

let the flaming commence.

Well, it is all about benchmarking. EPA rates car milage using a standardized testing routine that eliminates as many variables as possible (especially the wind and road conditions). The same is true for batteries. They usually test them with all power saving features enabled with no extra work load. Obviously, real life scenarios are rarely so perfect so you get both lower fuel milage and battery life than advertised. This is the nature of the benchmark.

Yes, I agree there should be an industry-wide standard for testing battery life which results in being rewarded certification (sort of like 80PLUS ceritifaction for power supplies or MIL-STD-901 for rugged computers). I think that's all one really can do though without sticking an average life span sticker on it which present their own assortment of problems (a different benchmark).

Why should AMD and Intel care about battery life? They need to keep making smaller chips that run off less power and are more powerful anyway, regardless if they fit in a notebook.

Let the research scientists and engineer's of the world develop newer battery technologies that can potentially slingshot us past the 'hours' standard and into the 'days' standard. Put the pressure on them to create something and keep AMD and Intel focused on what they do best(which is to compete for the best cpu).

It sucks to see that we have to wait for AMD to "Bring the spotlight" on the subject before action is done. The end user has always wanted a longer battery life, quicker charging, and longer half-life.

The laptops have to be developed in tandem with the battery. Yeah, power consumption of the components set a minimum and maximum for power requirements but good power management techniques can make all the difference. For instance, a laptop running XP is doing great to hit 2 hours but the same laptop running Vista (with all its extra power saving features) could hit 4 hours.

AMD always seems to bring the best ideas to the table. Then action is taken on those ideas for us all to use. I'm glad that they are finally pushing the subject for us.

Why isn't there a laptop that can run for 24 hours? It's almost a joke that their isn't a laptop on the market that can't do that. If there is a laptop on the market that could do that(besides a phone) I would like to read up on it myself.

I guess it seems that things only big changes are when big companies come in and say there's an issue that needs to be addressed. It's been an issue since the mobile PC was invented and barely been touched, shame on manufactures for not addressing this.

I totally agree that there should be a laptop that could run on a single charge for 24 hours. It is possible with today's technology someone just needs to make it happen. Whats the best battery life for a EEE PC? 12 hours? 14 hours?

I also think that the demand hasn't been there for the longer battery life since the laptop hasn't made it to the level of the cell phone. When cell phones were first introduced they were huge and had dismal batteries, and look how the demand has caused extreme growth in every aspect of the mobile phone. Whats the best battery life of a phone? 5-6 days? Even the newest 3G phones have at least 24 hr batteries(they also recharge very quickly).

Ultimately the market will drive the technology and not what the end user's wants.

How do you feel about this subject with Laptops?

Its not about Laptops , its about Lithium batteries and chemistry .

NiMH batteries got updated to 1000 charges .
( SANYO )

Lead ACID (UPS - alarm systems) updated too,1000 charges 10-12 years life cycle
(PANASONIC )

Lead ACID Gell ( motorcycles ) updated too .. double CCA -20 +60C operation
(YUASA)

They cannot add at the same dimensions , eco friendly chemistry at the same Ampere rating .
Only lower than the current .

In such questions about batteries , true specs , are better than feelings.

Do they sell any laptops with AMDs 20watt chips on the market?

I haven't seen any around. I would imagine that the screen takes a huge amount of power to run by itself.

One thing that I have never seen is a side pack battery for laptops. If I was a person that really was an on the go kind of guy. I could see myself with a Gel Cell 15 pound battery on my side with a carrying case. In fact I used to do that with my NEC Turbo Express as a kid when we traveled to see family. I also used it to rig in my SNES to play on my NEX Turbo Express TV tuner.

That would be a good option to sell with them IMO>

I have one installed in my sons power wheel at the moment. The sucker will run for HOURS compared to what it came with.

Notebook battery-life ratings by companies are as credible as mpg or km/l ratings by automobile manufacturers. Notebooks get to use mobilemark to draw out the ratings, but even the benchmark, more often than never, does not reflect real-world usage. It gets close though. Whatever be AMD's argument, they need to make more energy-efficient chips. Right now they don't quite make them.
