they're meh tbh, i liked mirage/harkey's art style more. it doesn't have to be this generic (almost-)photorealistic crap to look good tbh

i think its just nostalgia for me. opening a pack of Judgement after school in the 8th grade. man those were the best days. the world is shit now. too much noise in this world. humans were never meant for social media and instant high speed internet. our future is fucked lol

The art is uninspiring these days. Every izzet spell in purple, every black spell is dark. Most of the art is zoomed out to far.
i think its just nostalgia for me.
My older brother taught me how to play using his ice ige decks. The first deck i purchased for myself was from Nemesis with Stoneflow Overseer on the cover. It was the coolest box art but the worst set ever. Imagine being a young boy and all your rares have vanishing, but scaled wurm doesn't.

The nostalgia is powerful. But it was also a new and exciting product in the 90's.

The power creep has been intense recently with a 12/12 that makes another 12/12. They (probably) needed to power creep to get people back after "recent enough current events." Reminds me of going from Nemesis power to Mirrodin, and now an oppoment's Platinum Angel can't let you win.

Rambling over. I think much of the nostalgia comes from making friends. I had a play group where no one cared too much to win, we just made edh decks we thought would be fun for ourselves. When I moved recently, I started going to another lgs and everyone had $2k-$3k decks and were into politicking. A lot hangs on a good group, or you just spend a ton of money to win, play the same expensive deck over and over, and not make friends.

Well I think the latest Standard expansion has been out for a week now, honestly this is the first expansion in several years I never did a single draft or sealed deck tournament on opening week. I have no intention to, just a very lackluster expansion imo. I like the Disguise mechanic though, a neat thematic take on Morph from Onslaught, but with Ward, hence the name Disguise. lol that is mildly creative, so I give them that, but yeah this round doesn't interest me.

Hopefully the next Standard expansion is good, will keep doing my daily quests for gold until then.

I have like 80k gold saved cause there is nothing I want to buy, people don't give enough credit to this game, its really quite easy to stack gold over time and never spend a penny.

Yep... same sentiment here. They release too many goddamn cards. I'm bored. It feels like busywork. Oh I can go about yet another five pages worth of text on my cards to achieve some weird strategy. Yawn. Its clear they're running out of good ideas. Too much fluff around each set as well, too often. Dungeons, day/night, planes, battles... and none of it really sticks.

And then there's the reprint sets and the additional mini sets attached to things... jesus christ. Its raining cards. Value on bombs has dropped everywhere. They're printing shit like no tomorrow, its crazy. And lets not get started about as much as 5 or 6 art versions of some cards...

The thematic sets are for better or worse starting to shine in all this madness. If the theme is up your alley... Fallout set coming. :p Not a big fan, but yeah, okay. There's some good effort into those things. The Warhammer 40K deck set was amazing. Those sets also don't overcomplicate themselves. They just pick and choose from mechanics that really fit the theme. Its also not OP in any way, but powered quite right. I like.

I agree. Started playing with Alliances and first Starter was a Mirage. They used to look way more fun and with characters.

These days I login to Arena, reading some of them cards already put me in the mood for sleep.

I started with Odysset block launch, but I really wish Arena would let us relive the old days, I'd like to experience Ice Age, Mirage, Odyssey Block, Onslaught too

If they offer sealed drafts on anything Onslaught or older I will spend money on Arena for the first time.

I miss the old days.

I think just letting the printer roll and building a cube out of ancient set proxies is the only way to get there now.

And then finding a table for it with like minded individuals

Because lets face it. Arena aint gonna go there without forcing you to buy a shitload of packs along the way. And then continually changing it up too, so you keep buying.

MTG thread? First I knew this was here, long time MTG player since MTG first came out back in the early 90s but stopped playing awhile ago when the cards just became to strong with no side effects, Meriden was the start of the game going down hill in my eyes but did make some very old Artifact cards very strong.

mirrodin? that's ... ancient history, man. infact it's way closer to the OG 93/94 than it is to this contemporary bs. and it's not like we've not had fiascos like urza's or masques b4, either.
i'd say the alara-innistrad period's the game's original sin. i mean, maro's always been dumb af and always had extremely bad ideas about the game, but yeah.

there's been only one more significant revision after the 6th, which happened w/ m10-zen and that was a comparably minor one (vs the batch > stack change); the only ones of consequence involve combat (of which the most significant part is that damage no longer goes to the stack) and the removal of mana burn

Yeah the basic rules are still the same.

The more apparent change is that cards have books worth of text now. Not flavor text, no... they haven't got space for that. Usually there is some paragraph about however you are going to exile card X or Y in the process of getting access to some ultra silly effect you barely need to care about :)
