It is the closest exoplanet we could ever discover, and experts say missions to the planet to search for signs of life could be feasible 'within our lifetime'.


Astronomers have found clear evidence that our nearest star, Proxima Centauri, is the sun to another Earth-like world.

The group of researchers, using the European Southern Observatory (ESO) telescopes, have named the exciting world Proxima b.

Proxima b is only 4.6 million miles (7.5 million km) from the star, 5 per cent of the distance between the Earth and the sun, and takes just 11.2 days to complete one orbit. It is around 1.3 times as massive as Earth.

But because Proxima Centauri is a dim red dwarf star radiating much less heat than the sun, it still occupies the 'habitable zone' where temperatures are mild enough to permit liquid surface water.

The temperature on the surface of the planet could be between -90° and 30° Celsius (-130 and 86 Fahrenheit).

On the other hand, the planet is blasted by powerful ultraviolet rays and X-rays from the star. Any life that evolved on its surface would have to be hardened against the radiation.

Two separate papers have been published today, describing the habitability of Proxima b and its climate.

The papers find the existence of liquid water on the planet today 'cannot be ruled out'.

This means water may be present over the surface of the planet. But it would only be in the sunniest regions, either in an area in the hemisphere of the planet facing the star.




A team called Pale Red Dot is behind the discovery, which includes researchers from the University of Hertfordshire, Queen Mary University of London, the Instituto de Astrofísica de Andalucía in Granada, Spain and the University of Göttingen in Germany, among others.

The researchers used the High Accuracy Radial velocity Planet Searcher (HARPS), an instrument on the European Southern Observatory's 3.6-metre La Silla telescope in Chile's Atacama Desert.

The telescope measured light from Proxima, the fingerprints that reveal what the star is made of.

Small shifts in the frequency of the starlight can be used to work out tiny movements of the star in response to an orbiting planet's gravitational pull.

That's what I think anyway but who knows what advancements space travel will take over the next 5/10/20 years especially now it's being pioneered by private companies

Red Dwarf stars are near the end of their lifecycle, are they not? By the time (at least a hundred years from now) that we could muster up a human expedition/colonization effort, that star and its system could be extinct. What we see in the sky from other stars is really what happened a long time ago.

It's only 4.5 light years away so that's how it looked 4.5 years ago, I doubt it won't be there in another 100 years, whilst red dwarves may be near the end of their life cycle that could still be thousands /hundreds of thousands or a couple of million years away.. Which is still no time in the scheme of things

The earth has been through a lot more than what we have ever done to it and managed just fine and will continue to do so long after we're gone, I find it funny the gw believers think we're that significant in the scheme of things lol

i hate to be a downer but since Proxima B's star is at the tail-end of its life any intelligent life there is probably extinct. If there were intelligent life living that close to us that has been evolving a lot longer then wouldn't they have made contact with us? That's assuming a super evolved intelligent species would want to explore the universe. Hell, maybe they are here and we don't know it. Maybe we are their decedents! *mind blown*

That picture map does not do justice to the shear distance of Earth from Proxima Centauri. 4 light years is what it takes for light to travel in 4 years just for the closest star. It would take approximately 80 000 years with our current rocket technology. It is still an extremely challenging task for now.

I think "Earth like" planet need a stricter definition as my first thought of it that planet like our habitat Earth fit for humans to live without assistance from suit or life support device. This needs more things like liquid water, oxygen, a magnetic field to protect from solar radiation. This planet being such a planet is extremely unlikely probably it would be something similar to our current mars or in the better case scenario if the planet is cover in ocean of liquid water which for such a timespan with the star already becoming a dwarf, I am beginning to have doubts of the amount left.

The distance is truly vast. If we could get an unmanned probe up to a speed of 300 million mph then it would take 10 years to traverse the 4.5 light years not counting the additional time spent in acceleration and deceleration. I recall Lockheed claiming that they would have a working fusion reactor about the size of a truck within 10 years. Possibly something could be done with that to drive a spaceship.

Still, it would take another 4.5 years for whatever data the probe collected when it arrived to be transmitted back to Earth.

A fleet of so-called 'nanocraft' are set to fly through space at 20 percent the speed of light to reach a star system that is 25 trillion miles away in just two decades.

However, the team working on this project has found that if the probes hit just a speck of dust, 30 percent of its surface could be eroded by the time it reaches the Alpha Centauri system.

The mission, called Breakthrough Starshot, plans to send back pictures of any planets that may hold signs of life, with the hopes of finding our next home.

Breakthrough Starshot was first announced in April and is a $100 million project between Stephen Hawking, Russian billionaire Yuri Milner and Facebook's CEO Mark Zuckerberg.

Each wafersat will be designed with a light sail, a reflective surface developed to collect laser blasts from Earth and push the probes to top speeds, and Loeb says they will need to be folded and retracted during the entire trip.

$100 million on some tin foil sails and lasers :O what happens as it get's further away from earth, won't the laser take longer to reach it and also get less dense the longer the distance? will the light from the stars not send it off course, even if ever so slightly when you're talking the distances mentioned just a fraction of a degree would send it way off course.

I am pretty sure they have thought of those things. If it were me I would wait until the last week to start it and just live like a king for 20 years lol.
