Well if it's not running hotter than 4 years ago it's not needed....

Thanks, the reason I asked is i'm not that great when comes to knowledge of thermal paste type situations, was wondering if it had to be replaced every few years or such, especially as my cpu is an i7 5960x overclocked.
when it's benching it can reach about 70-80c , so was wondering if such temps may do anything to the paste!

Check the CPU temps by playing some games and do your usual things with it, they should be fine if it's 80 just with benchmarking.
I don't think you're benchmarking 24/7 with this rig.

Premium TIM might help lower the temps a few degrees such as Thermal Grizzly Kryonaut.(which I'm using myself)

Nope I don't bench 24/7 you are right their, i rarely bench unless i need technical support, or to check to see if my fans or cooler are actually working and stuff is doing what it's supposed to.
I will check my temps during gaming see how far they reach.

My guess, if I recall you are using an AIO cooler, would be that the radiator and fans likely need cleaned. Also the 5960x released late in 2014, so it has not been as long as you think, and is very likely that the paste is fine.

Paste doesn't really go bad, at least not in usable lifetime of modern CPUs. It is best to just leave it alone unless you are changing the cooler.

Can not agree with you there mate...most of the pastes dry out in time (even more if at high temps)...i see this almost daily when reparing older laptops/desktops.

If* we're talking good pastes here, i'd agree with newtekie. Have never changed mine and i always watch temps; hell, i even do a stress test once every 6 months or so, just to be sure of where i'm standing.
There has even been this one instance where i removed my AIO, plugged a new one in and -still- did not reapply paste. Temps confirmed i didn't have to (this on an FX 9370 no less).
Again though, good pastes.

TIM is cheap and not a big deal to change it. Just get some MX-4 or Thermal Grizzly and change it out. Then you'll know if it made a difference or not. While you're in there blow the dust out, especially of your radiator(s).

When you're all done if temps are the same, then no harm no foul. At least you know you cleaned it out.

First I have i7 5960x, your cpu isn't on par with it HA!. < If you take offence to this then i'm done, this isn't an insult it's even a playthrough nice reply, i even added "HA"

sorry if it comes of as rude, having (problems in real life) reading and spelling and constructive writing isn't a strong point in my life.

And for everyone else, thanks for the answers, I won't bother messing with my paste :)
I think the paste I had put on was Artic MX-4

I don't care as temperatures are temperatures and was trying to put your mind at ease as I have a "Hotter/Slower" CPU.

Just to think I was going to buy those 2x Sapphire R9 290X VaporX off your Dad @JR1 and you, so you could afford a 1080TI. With that crappy insult I change my mind!

Just remember kid I tried helping you and your father @JR1
on the 290X VaporX that YOU, @SanityGaming screwed up!

You admit that you have a slower CPU and are butthurt that he said it? Nice rant there! Also, if you followed that thread, you know there are "special circumstances" and you think you could have a little compassion instead of trying to take his head off and embarrass him. ;)

None of the decent modern pastes will dry out any time soon, or even really in the usable lifetime of the CPU. Even the crap ones that come bundled/pre-applied with the coolers.
