Thinking of getting a new (second hand) 6870, is it equal to the one I have?

Hi!

Well, since I have the flu, I was just browsing the net, and found a guy who is selling his "Radeon 6870 DirectCU" card.

I currently own an nVidia GTS 250 card, nothing directly wrong with it, has never failed or so.. But I need a card almost equal to this, that also supports DX11.

Please note, I'm not a "fan boy" of any company, just wanted to know if it's worth the money (around USD$ 154, or 117€uro).

I think my PSU should be able to handle the card.

Thanks

The 6870 will slaughter the GTS250 in any way possible. :D It's a huge improvement! Your PSU... it depends, what PSU is it? A 450/500W PSU would be more than enough, but that also depends on the quality.

EDIT: I'm also selling a GTX470 if interested ;)

Thanks! Well the PSU is rated somewhat 500/550w. Has never failed me either, I always clean my system, including the PSU from time to time.

Guess I'll buy it then if he still has it..

EDIT: And how about the HD5830? Is that card any good? Found one for around 600:-SEK (USD$ 93 or 70€uro).

i would say that 120 $ US is a fair price for a 6870

For $180 you can get a 7850 much better investment IMO

Thanks, problem is that the second hand card, I can negotiate the price and perhaps get it a bit cheaper. For me money is a bit of an issue right now.

That's understandable, I was just pointing out that that was a bit much to ask for a second hand 6870 as it two years old and the 7850 is about 20$US more then what that person was asking for the 6870

Yeah, I know. I just wrote him an e-mail (he had no phone number), and pointed out that it was too expensive. A card similar to his, from the local hardware store would be the HD6870 1GB OC, and the prices are not too far from a brand new, and his second hand one.

And thanks for pointing that out to me, the age of the card, since he wrote it was 1½ years old. :toast:

However...
Is it smarter, for me, not to be too hasty and buy it because it is good? If I save some cash I could actually afford the 7850, and not only that, I was counting - I could perhaps even manage to afford the 2Gb model of the 7850..

From one of the reviews I saw of a 1GB 7850 vs a 2GB, that extra GB doesn't offer much improvement until you're over 1080p. What games do you play? If none of them are brand spanking new, the 6870 should do just fine.

The 5830 is utter crap, avoid it.
If you decide to save more, don't go for 7850 2GB go strait for a 7870.

Well, I bought a 2GB HD 7850 for $150 from Newegg during Black Friday a few months back, and I also just bought an HD 6870 (for a friend) for $100 from a seller on Ebay a week ago.

The 2GB really helps me since I regularly use ~200-500 MB of the memory when not even playing games (1440p monitor). Almost every game I play goes over 1 GB, even though I never play fullscreen, but rather, I play in 1080p windowed with a couple other applications running.
