I'm thinking of getting that superb MSI GTX 780 Ti Gaming reviewed on TPU a little while ago, but have a couple of questions first.

- It's quite well priced, but do you think the price is likely to drop if I wait a month or so?

- When is a Maxwell-based top end card likely to be released? I get the impression it's at least 6 months out at the absolute minimum.

UPDATE

I've now ordered the MSI card from Scan and will receive it in a couple days. Can't wait.

Buy now, cry later. Bought a 780 at full price on launch day, now look at how much they cost. It's the fee you pay to be an early adopter, and some of us don't have a problem with it ;)
Just buy it, it's an awesome card. Prices are always going to change for the worse!

I'd get a 780 Classified but I assume you aren't going to watercool, right?

If so 780 Ti gaming is fine and the one I'd pick.

Another question though, are you having issues running any game lately? I think your 580s still pack a punch and they'll able to carry you to Maxwell without any problem especially since you are on 1080p and games that require flat out 144 Hz capped are so old you can run them on a single 580.

While I have no concrete info, I doubt we'll see any significant price drops in the near future? Maybe $10 or $20 till late summer, but is that worth the wait?

I also doubt we'll see high-end Maxwell soon, I'd guess fall too.

"Buy now, cry later". Love it, that's what I wanna hear! :D Yes, I bought my original GTX 580 for the full £400 and didn't regret it. In fact, I'm keeping it as part of my ever-growing NVIDIA graphics card collection and will sell the MSI 580s I've got in my rig now. I may yet pull the trigger soon on the 780 Ti, I have to think about it a bit more.

radrok, one thing I've learned about myself is that I'm never satisfied unless I have an uncrippled top end GPU. Hence it's the 780 Ti or nothing for me, lol. Hence, it's no use convincing myself just how good value the second one down is and/or how close the performance is to the top one. I want the top one, end of story. And yes, NVIDIA saw me coming.

What stopped me getting that Titan is first the ridiculously exhorbitant price which I'd never pay for a graphics card and secondly the fact the GPU was crippled and I knew it was only a matter of time until NVIDIA released the full version with better performance at a more reasonable price.

Now, as far as the raw framerate performance goes, yes these are still very powerful* and can play everything I throw at them. However, I'm sure you'll be able to relate as a fellow enthusiast, I'm not applying any normal, common sense thinking to my purchasing decisions when it comes to my rig. Oh no, for this it's "enthusiastconomics" all the way baby! :rockout: So yeah, how much more powerful will it be? I'm not quite sure. But all this power is packed into a single GPU and crucially, it's whisper quiet, a first for this performance class. No wonder wizzy rated it 9.9 and said he'll use it in his personal rig:

"I, for my part, will be replacing my personal system's ASUS GTX 670 Direct CU with the MSI GTX 780 Ti Gaming as it's the best card I've reviewed in a long time."

Of course, I can just see myself getting a second one in the not too distant future too... complete overkill I know, especially at 1080, but then it's the same logic as owning a sports car that does 200mph when you can only do 70mph legally on the road. It feels good. Real good. ;)

Thing is with a gaming rig, you can never have too much rendering power. It's all about preventing or at least minimising those stutters in even the most demanding situations. Now that I game with a 120Hz LightBoost monitor, keeping the framerate up is more important than ever.

Thanks wizz, very helpful. :)

*A four year old GPU, no less. Just how much have things stagnated?

some says that the TF cooler on the Gaming series are a little too load then they should be.

why not get a Asus DCII GTX 780 Ti if you got a Asus board and if prices ain't far a part.

The only things I can see inducing a Ti price drop would be the 290X back at its original MSRP or the introduction of a 6GB Nvidia card that minimized demand.

I can't think of anything else that would create downward pricing pressure.

The MSI Gaming 780ti is currently retailing in UK for almost below vanilla model price (£510). Buy now before it goes back to £550.

Also, 290x prices are currently stable in UK. We don't mine like the US.

Scan does not offer free sweets with their deliveries ;) OCUK however are more expensive in terms of delivery cost however.
I've also been subjected to several very dodgy business practices by Overclockers, so I only buy from them if absolutely necessary. The one that comes to mind is that "NEW OEM" CPU I bought a few years ago that turned out to be some scratched up second hand thing which I returned. It didn't even run all that stable, either. Clearly damaged. I made a thread about it on here.

I was going to suggest getting the same card as I have(EVGA GTX 780ti SC ACX), but it's about £80 more. That is a really nice price on the MSI card.

I think that 780ti Gaming is a great choice. The price is very competitive vs. other solutions (custom r9 290X's) and it rolls pretty much every other card into the floor that isn't SLI/Crossfire. The best single card out there, it certainly gets my vote for sure.

Thanks happita for saying something I really like to hear. :toast:

Thanks for the suggestion fluff, but the MSI actually beats it. It's clocked a tiny bit faster, but the real killer is the noise performance under load which is way better than the Palit.

The Palit is actually a touch noisier than the reference cooler, while the MSI is much quieter than reference (check out TPU's review linked to in my OP).

EDIT

I forgot the punchline: I've now bought the MSI card from Scan.

I would also recommend the 780Ti SC ACX, runs very cool and runs exceptionally well.

I purchased mine last Monday. Upgraded from a highly overclocked 7970. It is much, much faster and I forgot how much eyecandy you are missing with ATI cards in a lot of games that support it. Anyhow the cooler is very, very quiet and does a good job on cooling as well. My only complaint is lack of backplate and coming from the watercooled 7970 to this it sure heats up my case interior a lot more...that will soon be fixed as this will be in my loop soon.

I scored just over 13k in 3dmark11 on stock gpu settings. Not bad considering my 7970 just got over 10k. Same CPU/Mem just different Video cards.

Great card, would recommend.

I can say the exact samething about my ti as well, except for the heat part. I upgraded from a 7970 OC'ed 1100/1400 with a reference heatsink and the ti just blows it out of the water both performance and cooling wise. A link to my 3dMark11 score in my system specs if you care to see it. I also currently have the 4th highest single gpu score in the Unigen Heaven benchmark thread.

You are a tad bottlenecked, you'd see way higher 3DM score with a faster CPU :toast:

Really? I get 13,600 with my OC'ed 2600k

Opps- Forgot to quote... Quoting Radrok -

no, i dont think you are right on that. take a look at the charts. I'm running just as fast as an i7 3770k @ 4.8ghz with a OC'd 7970. Once I get the 780ti on water I will supass that and probably push into the 14k area. The i7 950 at 4.2Ghz is just fine.

http://www.techpowerup.com/forums/threads/new-3dmark-11-compilation.135908/

I am not saying a new cpu (like a 4770k) running at 4.5ghz wouldn't be faster, it would, and my score would be higher, but not from the i7 950 holding the card back, just the newer cpu is slightly faster and increases score overall but nothing to do with holding back the 780ti.

I was really hot on the stock cooler, because it's so beautifully made and wanted a reference card because of it. But never mind the overclock on the MSI Gaming for a moment, it's that amazing quietness even when pushed hard that really does it for me. It's great to see a fellow enthusiast confirm the claims in the review. :)

Fact is I don't like fan noise and really hate it when it's whiny and is something one normally has to live with for high end performance. Yet, this card has the acoustics of a low end card while delivering all that performance. If MSI have done it now, it proves that it is possible to dissipate all that heat without the cooler making a fuss or forcing customers to pay a premium for it.

Respect to MSI for releasing such a great model and showing up the competition.

Well, I received the card yesterday and it looks awesome. Also, the box is very nicely presented and is clearly premium packaging for something at this price point.

I also want to mention that Scan had packed it very well, with no box damage whatsoever. Some people may not care, but box damage really pisses me off.

I had wanted to do some comparative benchmarks between this card and some of my old ones, but my Windows 7 installation has got some longstanding niggly problems that refuse to be fixed. I'd been meaning to reinstall it for some time now, but hadn't got round to it.

The latest problem is that games using DX10 or DX11 hang on startup, while DX9 and lower work just fine. This means that I can't benchmark with Metro 2033 in DX11 mode, for example, only DX9 which is frankly a bit pointless for a card like this.

I guess this weekend is gonna have to be a priority for reinstalling Windows then.

Congrats on the upgrade! The reference cooler is already pretty quiet for what it is so your new card must be whisper quiet.
