I am looking at 5800X with either MSI Tomahawk x570 or Asus X570 TUF WIFI. I like Asus...but not sure if the board will support Zen 3 out of the box. How would I flash the bios to make sure Zen 3 supported (bios v 2407) MSI has bios flashback built in where Asus no longer supports unless high end board. Both motherboards have similar thermals for VRM...I can save some $$$ by combining the CPU / Motherboard in combo purchase.

Will the Asus boot with older bios, so it can be flashed?

Thanks

If the board maker won't help with getting it updated, AMD has a bios update kit that you might qualify for.

Interesting....looked it up. I am going to check with the store to see what the situation about them updating bios for me would be. Thanks

At least MSI has bios flashback

When you get cpu and mobo from the same shop, you can probably ask them to check if the mobi has a zen3 capable bios installed. Otherwise they will surely upgrade the bios for you.

its not worth upgrading in my honest opinion. your system is already an 8 core with 16 threads, quad channel memory. your best bet right now is pocket that cash and wait for ddr5. you can overclock what you have to get more performance. in fact your system is still high end. overclocking will net you some nice gains.

It depends on what the OP is doing with the system, if it saves time > to make them more money then the upgrade may well be worth it, not to mention the increased efficiency will lower the power bills even if only a little.

Also zen3 should be a fair bit faster than the 7820x in most tasks.

The method to my madness is that my son's system is failing and I was going to build a new system for myself and give him mine. I am most inclined to go for the 5900X (upgrade from 8 to 12 cores)...more easily justifiable. Figure a system like that could last me for some time to come...unless some major jump in tech. I currently have the 7820x clocked at 4.6 GHZ at 1.171v. Beyond that gets pretty hot even with a 280 mm AIO.

The 5900x is also probably currently the best VFM chip in that lineup, especially compared to the 5800x.

Well...I was able to order the MSI X570 Tomahawk Wifi...on it's way. Can't find 5900X anywhere. Return window on the MB is through 1/31...so I have some time to play with. Hopefully some CPU's will start showing up at MSRP after the holidays.

I'm guessing you bought the motherboard on Amazon. I guessed with the return window.
