For the second time today my trusty T430 died... hard shutdown with no notice. It goes from working perfectly to so dead as if I unplugged the charger and removed the battery.

When it dies removing the battery and charger and then plugging them back in DOES NOT work and does NOT allow it to power back on. I have to wait a while before it will work again.

I don't think it's an overheating issue because I just tried stressing the CPU and the system, CPU, and GPU temps ended up at about 100C in HWMonitor but even 10 mins of that and it didn't shut down. When it shut down I wasn't doing anything particular intensive.

I did just update the BIOS from a 2012 version to 2019 prior to running the stress test. Not sure if that solved the problem or not.

The only thing I changed recently was a fresh reinstall of Windows 7 instead of Windows 10 which I was running before.

Complete specs: I7-3520M CPU, Intel HD4000 GPU, 16GB DDR3 RAM, 250GB WD Blue SSD.

My primary concern is that I rely on this computer for work. I need to make sure this doesn't happen again, so I'm hoping anyone has troubleshooting ideas, or if I can't fix it, I'm going to have to buy a new computer, which I can't rely afford right now.

100 Celcius is only 5 degrees away from throttling so there's a good chance it's overheating related.

Its overheating, pull it apart, give it a thorough dusting, replace thermal compound on hsf. Pray the caps arent shot in it, Get a cooling pad and possibly replace the brick snd batteries or try another outlet

assuming the battery has charge in it and the power brick hasn't died i think maybe you should think seriously about getting another computer if you rely on it..

Yes but that was with a 100% CPU stress test not a little coding or streaming...

Yeah, I tried a different power brick. You're probably right, I should purchase a new computer and keep this one as a backup. I think I'll try to limp this one along for a few more weeks since the issue hasn't happened again and start looking into a replacement.

Crap in the fan? Recently upgrade the SSD in my X250 and the fan was full of "stuff" that I cleaned out with a brush at the same time.
It should not get that hot, even at full tilt.

Nicad, and lithium have what is known as memory effect too, which will indicate there is a charge but actually there is not, only deep cycling the battery can remove that effect.

unless money is really tight you would be better biting the bullet now.. before the one you have really does cause you real problems.. :)

as you say keep it as a spare..

It's too close to throttling I assume.
it dosnt matter how close it is to throttling it should not shut down and refuse to restart..

when (if) a modern intel cpu hits its throttle point which is mostly 100 c it simply slows down sufficiently to not go over the 100 c.. it will run this way for ever.. its designed to..
