This falling wifi speed doesn't make any sense (to me)

My PC is connected to my router (about 8-10 feet away) via at least a cat 6 cable. (It might be rated higher, definitely no lower)
I have a 1.6 gbps connection.

Doing a speed test using the wired connection I get about 1600mbps.
If I connect using wifi (wifi 6) and run a speed test again, I get round about 1500 -1600 mbps.

However, I have just noticed that if I unplug the ethernet cable from the router and run another speed test over wifi I can only manage between 500 and 800 mbps. Lowesst has been 360. Although the upload speeds remain constant at around 110 (which is what they're supposed to be).

I am severely confused.

Router is an Asus GT-BE19000 and my network connector on my MB is 2.5 gbps.

This is just the max real world speed of WiFi 6, there's "overhead" so the indicated headline Mbps of the connection isn't fully usable, been the same for all prior WiFi standards as well.

Fair enough.
But why the huge difference with the cable plugged in?
(I'm a bit of a dummy when it comes to this sort of thing)

I´ll bet if you don´t treat it as a "plug and play" and rather as a "power down/power up" kinda deal, the connection will never drop.

NICs on motherboards behave that way sometimes, having trouble with reconnect-handshakes concerning speeds.

What you describe is a reconnect with 1 instead of 2.5 Gig.

Next time please have a look:
