The Q9300 will get a nice OC to 3.2 or 3.5Ghz with the 1600mhz Ram i put in it so we will see how it goes.

Just remember the Q9300 has a very weak multiplier like 7.5x

So in order to get a 3.5Ghz overclock you will need the FSB @ 470 which is starting to push it.

I would personally keep an eye out for a cheap Q9550 or Q9450. 12mb cache and will come with a higher multiplier to boot.

That's if you do decide to stay with 775 of course.

I just dont want a good board to go to waste knowing it still has some life left in it.

Mainly ill upgrade my very own PC, but the leftovers from my build i want to put in this system and make a solid Core 2 Quad system for my sister to do stuff on it.

Q9550 and Q9650 are x2 the price of the Q9300, so that is why im not going with those since it wont justify 5 to 10% improvement over the Q9300 for double the price, since im going budget oriented.

The Q9300 will get a nice OC to 3.2 or 3.5Ghz with the 1600mhz Ram i put in it so we will see how it goes.

Tnx for all your opinions.
Ok if the price difference is that huge here where I live you can find them for few bucks more than q9300 but also you can always go for Xeons with sticker on it for example E5462 is very cheap........

I agree.....I even think that Q6600 is better then Q9300......What do you think about Xeons?Did you have any experience with them on socket 775?

all I'm going to say is that almost all Q9650 were capable of OC'ing to 4.2 GHz (mine did 4.5GHz with a Gigabyte P45 chipset board and DDR2 800 RAM). That's a 25% higher clock speed than you'll achieve with the Q9300. Between the higher OC'ability and the extra cache (the extra cache really boosted the 9650's quickness), the Q9650 is definitely worth an extra $25 over the Q9300 IMHO.

I used a Q9550 all the way through 2014 and 2015 with 8GB's of memory, and an eVGA GTX 960. I also used an Intel 320 series(Sata II) SSD. For a decade old pc...it ran great. Had no problems playing any title in my Steam/GOG account @ 1080p. Might not have held 60FPS on high settings all the time, but the games ran good...damn good for my purposes.

If I was going to build a system now and if money's tight, I'd probably spend $7.50 on a q6600 with the 'BSEL tape mod' to 3GHz and leave it alone.

I still like going on Youtube and searching for core 2 quad gaming etc....nice to watch those videos and see what these older quad cores can do.

I actually miss the old rig, but I'm a tried and true....sentimentalist.

Just lock your computer so she can't get on yours, bet she isn't doing general maintenance to what she has currently and needs to be schooled on it
