ahhh.. from what i've heard that has a fairly solid cooler and that is good price, i'd say go forit. but if you want to folow thier advice for nvidia, you be looking at 2070/super for the same performance.

The 2060 is already several hundred more expensive here in Canada. He could surely afford the more expensive one, but like everyone else he is laid off....

So I'ma guessing 2070 would be even more extravagant...

The actual cooler on the card is very solid. Just make sure he does some research into navi cards as it seems people are still having various issues with them.

I've seen too many threads latley regarding problems with the RX 5700. Go with Nvidia for the time being or wait for the next-gen AMD cards.

I am curious which problems you are seeing because I have worked on a few RX 5700 XT's now and have not faced a single problem.

So you use example of someone who messed up a flash and using examples of a black screen issue that was more or less resolved since two driver updates ago? Besides two people with more recent dates, the rest are from either late last year or early this year.

March 2nd.

I could mention all the dead RTX cards from earlier of its release but that wouldn't be constructive nor correct cause the hardware issues were resolved in later releases. I would wager its the same with the RX 5700 cards now.

Hardware Unboxed also did a take on this.

You know Radeon Software Adrenalin 2020 isn't exactly great yet. (It's also the reason why I use the Radeon Pro drivers.) We all agree that RTG has great hardware hampered by not-so-perfect software.

Like right now, my reference RX 5700 XT runs great, no black screen issues, software conflicts, etc. Even when I was using 19.12.3 and the 20.1.3. But I know a few who are running into those random blackscreen/TDR failures on the 20.2.x drivers.

While yes drivers are still work in progress, it is rather disingenuous to outright claim it's bad and use examples from last year/early this year or someone with a bad flash.

Anyway, here is the hardware unbox video

While some of those examples are older and some not related (the bad VBIOS flashes), the drivers can put a damper on a new user's RX 5700 XT experience.

My son is thinking of buying this card, to go into a ryzen 1700 with gigabyte ab350 mb.(my old rig)

@Rickkins Here have a reference RX 5700 XT from Dell @ $349.99. An alternative if you don't like blower coolers would be PowerColor's Red Devil version @ $439.99 on NewEgg, but I still think its a little overpriced for what it offers ($400 or $410 would be perfect for me).

EDIT: Ahhhh I see you're talking about this particular Gigabyte card. Sadly its at $470 at the moment, unless its cheaper in Canada.

It could put a damper on new buyers. But if the issue is more or less resolved with few anecdotal evidence of issue here and there, that can be said of any gpu then. It's always a wager when you buy something.

I agree with this, however please note that blackscreen/TDR issues are quite annoying compared to some of the issues the NVIDIA drivers had in the same time frame with the new SUPER line. Hopefully OP (and future buyers) don't experience it with 20.4.1 moving forward. And even if they do, the alternative is to install the drivers manually in the Device Manager (I haven't tested this yet) and not install the Radeon Software or just install the Pro drivers.

I would say with a GPU dying cause of memory issues is more severe than driver issues.

But I guess that's just me. And that was initial RTX cards.

I too hope as time goes on, AMD drivers will fix any more of black screen issues if it still is an issue for most.

5700 is a great card and I'd recommend buying it. If you go beyond the 1080p resolution the 5700 is a great performer. I'd say that the 5600 XT (slightly cheaper) can do the work as well. The 5700 model is just a notch more expensive, slightly faster and has 8GB of ram. If your monitor max res is 1080p maybe consider something cheaper?

Navi cards do have problems, it's clear. Still, they offer excellent price/performance ratio since a Nvidia card with similar performance is much more expensive.

Ima make this simple. That gigabyte RX 5700XT is one of the best 5700XT's you can get. cool, quiet, great performance for the $$$. Check out Hardware Unboxes review on youtube if you want a full analysis & as for the so called driver issues, I've only experienced a weird one which I called the Green Screen Of Death, which was extremely rare, turned out to be an old HDMI cable I was using. I've had my 5700XT for awhile now & it's been pretty damn good, if I were you I'd get it but if you're concern about driver issues grab a 2070 Super instead. :toast:

No its not. A DOA GPU or dying one shortly after purchase is a straight RMA and replacement. You lost it for a few weeks, you get a new one. Admittedly, some Nvidia customers have been having several DOAs in a row... signs of a bad batch going around. Today, there are no (and I do mean, virtually none) big stories about Turing cards dying or straight up not working. Still it wasn't the smoothest gen, for sure. But there is STILL a marked difference with AMD"s releases. Nearly every Navi card that was released had some issues. Up to and including weird stuff with VRAM speeds and optional BIOSes during launch, which was AMD digging its own hole.

But driver issues are permanent and tied to versions. If you are going past that version, you will encounter problems and it can send you on a wild goose chase if you're not careful in your analysis. That is part of the reason you see all those BIOS topics and other stuff with the 5700XT (and numerous other AMD cards in history). Freedom to tweak and less strict driver regime is the main cause of that.

You are referring to RX 5600XT. That's different than 5700 when you mention vbios. Topic on hand is 5700xt. Wasn't there also a recent rma done by a member here for a 2070? I seem to recall as such.

Also, like dead gpu problems, driver problems didn't hit everyone. Even less now that the newer drivers are out.

Please be consistent when we post. Let's not derail the topic so it fits someone's narrative. Simple point is, someone asked if the card is good. It is. Someone said don't bother with these cards because of issues and buy RTX cards instead. That post was not consistent as the proof was a mix bag. I pointed that out. Now you bring RX 5600XT to the debate as if it is relevant which it is not.

Not like I care. I dont have a dog in this fight. I just point out fallacies being posted. It isn't my place what someone buys or doesn't. Nor do I have any kind of brand loyalty as loyalty in a company is just silly.

I think simply, the RX 5700 and 5700 XT are great cards. I recommend them as I have built multiple customers machines with such machines and after I tested them for a day or two never faced an issue. Also, no complaints back from said customers. I was pleased with its performance and for the cost, they are great.

Verify return and refund policy of the store. If they offer hassle free returns then go ahead and buy 5700xt.

Yeah, worst case scenario you'll start yet another RX 5700 thread here, and i'll advise you to return it and go with Nvidia instead.
