You are referring to RX 5600XT. That's different than 5700 when you mention vbios. Topic on hand is 5700xt. Wasn't there also a recent rma done by a member here for a 2070? I seem to recall as such.

Also, like dead gpu problems, driver problems didn't hit everyone. Even less now that the newer drivers are out.

Please be consistent when we post. Let's not derail the topic so it fits someone's narrative. Simple point is, someone asked if the card is good. It is. Someone said don't bother with these cards because of issues and buy RTX cards instead. That post was not consistent as the proof was a mix bag. I pointed that out. Now you bring RX 5600XT to the debate as if it is relevant which it is not.

Not like I care. I dont have a dog in this fight. I just point out fallacies being posted. It isn't my place what someone buys or doesn't. Nor do I have any kind of brand loyalty as loyalty in a company is just silly.

I think simply, the RX 5700 and 5700 XT are great cards. I recommend them as I have built multiple customers machines with such machines and after I tested them for a day or two never faced an issue. Also, no complaints back from said customers. I was pleased with its performance and for the cost, they are great.

Then you come in, with a very blanket statement saying 'driver issues are not as bad as a dead card'... and in that, I beg to differ. You don't have a dog, neither do I. I like cats, myself What it comes down to is the overall feeling of brand A versus B. Its ALWAYS a toss up when you buy a GPU. Your particular one might have a shitty cooler mount. It could have space invaders. Or constant TDRs... or no support for a new game. But the general consensus is that the 5700XT was not quite the smooth launch it should have been, and post launch there were also quite a few problems. And then, the stories like those of a 5600XT don't help in reaching the conclusion that the overall quality of AMD GPUs is fantastic. Or do you disagree with that?

None of this says its impossible to get a perfectly fine 5700XT. But the chances are higher your Nvidia alternative will have less problems today, and likely also in the near future. And if you have to specifically then, buy a Gigabyte GPU... yeah, definitely find a decent Nvidia alternative... or a better 5700XT.

It wasnt a smooth launch. But neither was Nvidia's. Be mindful with your blanket statement point - opinions differ between people. No need to try and bring down a person because he or she may not share your viewpoint. Drivers can be and has been fixed.

Rickkins will make his decision. And I think next time people should be more objective than cherry picking issues.

If you are in Canada it makes common sense to get whatever the cheapest 5700XT you can get. The only thing I would say is based on my own experience it is really enjoyable to be with AMD these days with the software revisions and driver updats we are getting from team Red.

I usually use PCPartPicker to check prices. Canadian prices seem to fluctuate wildly due to what appears to be a lack of inventory. I picked up my MSI Radeon 5700 XT MECH OC for ~$370 USD a couple of weeks ago and it's been good to me. I wanted adaptive sync over HDMI, so I avoided Nvidia.

Hopefully it'd give you some idea of what's available and average prices.

Kinda OT, but that "2K" is one of the most stupid marketing term used. If 2160p is called 4K, then why the hell 1440p is called 2K instead of 1080p?

I keep it simple, 1080p - 1440p - 4K.

I'm going to offer my two cents here, and OP is free to do as they wish in spite of my experience of course, but my 5700 XT experience has been NOTHING but headaches. I believe @Regeneration linked my thread a few posts up, along with several others who've had problems with their cards.

OP, my short answer is this: With 1st gen Navi, you're ultimately playing a game of Russian Roulette when you click the "buy" button -- you may end up with a good result (it works as expected) or a bad result (something about the card forces you to play the RMA game, etc.) -- so just be aware that there are still many, MANY user complaints from frustrated/angry Navi owners (it does seem to affect the entire line) about drivers and a plethora of other issues that I hope to god are FINALLY ironed out once RDNA2 comes.

Just know OP that if you ultimately decide to go with the 5700 XT, prepare yourself for any problems you encounter with it. That includes making sure whoever you buy from has a solid return policy.

AMD CPUs prior to Zen sucked big time compared to Intel's. After it lost some market share, AMD invested resources in R&D and came up with a proper competitor.

Let's face it... the AMD GPUs in the recent years aren't that good. Drivers suck too. Vote with your wallet if you want it to change.

Personally, in the past 5 years, i've returned 3 AMD cards and went with Nvidia.

Have you seen the new UI and the amount of tweaking you can do with an AMD GPU? Show me a card from reviews and benchmarks that is faster than the 5700XT and at the same time cheaper? There is no doubt that the 2080 Super and 2080TI are faster and both are $1000-$1700 cards even the 2070 Super is a little bit faster but at least 40% more than the 5700XT. All of those cards are way more expensive than the 5700XT. In Canada we have to pay more for parts generally speaking, an AIB 5700XT for $499 is Academic in my mind if you are looking for the best price/performance option.

OP - that giga card is solid. I believe it is reference PCB but good cooling. As far as the problems with amd... chances are very good your son will be fine, but there are driver issues and currently nvidia is more stable on that front.

While yes drivers are still work in progress, it is rather disingenuous to outright claim it's bad

I wouldnt call it bad, per say... but worse than nvidia right now I think a majority would take to the bank.

There has been black screen issues on their KNOWN list of problems going on nearly a year, for example.

I hope you enjoy the GPU. If you purchased it from lets say Memory Express you got about 15 days to return the card in store and that isn't so bad as it gives time for you to thoroughly test the GPU. I mean, if we want to use anecdotal evidence of something then I can say I have effectively tested 2 of these cards (mind you, one is Sapphire and the other is an MSI) 5700xt for customers and they never experienced issues. It seems to be all over the place. So if you have issues, just return it within 15 days (I think all sellers have it minimum 15 days here in Canada).

When you can have either the fastest card or a whole gaming PC with 5700 XT with the same price, it's not hard to guess which one is the choice for most users.

I'd bet good money that the amd driver issues affect more than the 2080ti's biting the dust. You have to remember, the black screen issue came with navi and is, for some (according to their known issues listed in driver release notes) still there. Then adrenalin 2020 came out in December and what is supposed to be fine wine, was sour grapes. They've been recovering since, but still have a list black screen issues and seemingly more trouble than nvidia now.

I'd take a 2080ti at initial launch and I'd take it now. I'm a gambler and my odds are worse at black jack, by leaps and bounds, than it is to get a bad 2080ti. Besides...that's what RMAs are for.
