After some consideration and advice from these forums, I have decided to upgrade my video card. With Ryzen on the horizon I am going to keep the cost under $250. This puts me in the RX480 or Low end GTX 1060 range.

Either one should play all of my games at max settings @1080 and 60+FPS.

So, opinions please. And please give reasons why.

RX 480 8GB for 1080p gaming it performs way better than GTX 1060 6GB.

Only con is u have to live with AMD's drivers but when they work and perform it's a killer and the RX 480 is a no brainer card for the price if u can't afford a GTX 1070.

1. None of these cards can guarantee solid 60FPS in ALL games, even at 1080p.

2. GTX 1060. Lower power consumption, less heat, better performance and less issues with drivers.

Anyways 480 gets my vote, and people keep saying the drivers have been improving for it since then too.

But you are right none can provide 60+fps in all games but that would highly depend on what settings you require too, but this all so depends on what games he plays and what his main game(s) are too.

Might be worth just waiting but this will all so depend on if he can with 2x960's.

RX 480 8GB or GTX 1060 6GB?

If I were you I'd probably pay the few bucks more for the GTX 1060 6GB. Should be worth it.

But I personally wouldn't buy either one. I'm saving for a GTX 1070.

"Ryzen on the horizon"

6gb 1060 and rx480 are same performance-wise.
if you play a specific games check if these lean towards amd or nvidia cards and base your choice on that.
if not, price and card (cooler).

i would take that hardwarecanucks story with a large grain of salt. "updated review" means a new games lineup with somewhat questionable choice of games.
there are 7 comparable games between their older reviews (1060 review) and this one - fallout 4, hitman dx11, overwatch, division, witcher 3, hitman dx12 and rise of the tomb raider dx12. comparing these games the difference is 1% towards 1060 (older review was 4.1% to 1060). averaging the fps improvement over individual games is 0.5% for 1060 and 3.2% for rx480.

tl;dr
hardwarecanucks story actually shows rx480 has received a pretty consistent 2-3% improvement while 1060 has the same performance as at launch.

Whichever you can get cheaper, with some proper cooling. If you play a specific game more than other check the benchmarks and decide. I'd probably lean towards the RX480 a bit but both are capable.

I went for the EVGA 1060 SC. Cheap and small.
On Windows it's a toss-up, really, but I needed solid Linux support, too.

I thought OP said the lower end 1060? So does that mean the one with 3GB? If so, then definitely RX480.

Start your own thread man.. dont jack someone else's. When you start it, be sure you include the resolution you play on and settings you expect. A budget would be great too.

@Evo85 If you wanna max everything like that and stay above 60fps then I recommend at least a GTX 1070. I know it might break the budget, but it will help to keep the framerate up during difficult sections. If you can stretch to it, you won't regret it.

Both cards are very close. I'd pick the 1060 just because it over clocks a lot better than the 480. I like to tweak, and the 480 just doesn't overclocking that well compared to the the 1060.

TheOP has SLI'd GTX 960's. In games that support SLI, the performance will be nearly the same as either of these cards. So:
  • I don't believe (personal opinion) in moving from one generation to the next at the same performance level, such as 960 - 1060.
  • A GTX 1060 gives you almost nothing new, other than the VRAM amount.
  • The RX 480 would at least give you real DX12 and Vulkan support.
Therefore, my answer is the RX 480 (and the XFX Radeon GTR RX 480 specifically) but better yet, save up for the GTX 1070.

Off topic: Find a used GTX 980. That will increase your performance, up VRAM to 4GB and put an end to SLI issues. Should be able to find a nice one for under $200.

1. None of these cards can guarantee solid 60FPS in ALL games, even at 1080p.

2. GTX 1060. Lower power consumption, less heat, better performance and less issues with drivers.

Drivers. Thats a loaded statement. AMDs have gotten pretty persistent. Nvidias are all over the place.

As I wrote few times already, it really depends on your setup and games you play. With Nvidia i have pretty much 0 issues, hence my statement.

I was presented with the same dilemma and I bought the GTX 1060 . HOWEVER if it weren't for the poor performance of DX11 with weaker CPU's like my FX 6300 with AMD cards , I would have went with the RX480 since it has little bit more raw performance which will help in the long term. So if you plan to stick with that CPU I recommend you do the same. Other than that I can vouch for it's performance (1060) and OC potential OC , I got 2075mhz out of it without touching the voltage or fan curve on a blower style cooler.

By the way , you should really ignore statements like "Nvidia drivers work better" they are irrelevant . Both AMD and Nvidia can fuck up their drivers and they will do it , be certain of it.

Everyone who had in past amd/nvidia knows green side is better.

Well I had both and I didn't know that , what did I do wrong ? Lets not say silly biased things mate.

I'd say I'm the exact opposite of you then , no issues with AMD drivers over the 8 years I've used them bar new game release oddities like batman games, yet only issues with the last Nvidia card I still own cos no one would buy it, evga 460 2win , that piece of shit stops whole pcs booting on occasion for no reason but don't fret to retort because I personally realise that it was likely a one off thing in hardware and hence not what guides my GPU bias towards AMD ,that would be Nvidias business decisions regarding customers, that and their pricing.
But I will be clear I except you have your opinion and I know and understand why, but I've never seen that issue surface for me so I advise based on my experience.
And Rx 480s are good cards with few driver issues worth noting(I have witnessed none) especially remembering Nvidia and Intel also have known faults and eratta lists.

I reported 1 issue for an OS that is going the way of the dinos supposedly, I only started reporting the issue in September 2016 and it got fixed as of 16.12.1s, even the 17.1.2 WHQLs don't have the issue that 16.5.2-16.11s had, before that the last major issue I had was Catalyst 4.2s.
