And it definitely shows how far ahead Intel is in IPC.

Interesting although not sure Intel is in trouble unless the masses of corporate workstations etc use LN2 of course.... ohhh and use Cinebench. To be fair even at stock it looks pretty good.

Except it's a CPU performing better than a more expensive Intel offering even without LN2 or a chiller. AMD is undercutting Intel's prices for a better performing CPU and that's what matters.

How much is the Intel 28 core CPU speculated to cost?
I just had a look online at my local store here in Australia and the AMD CPU is $2,679, I expect the Intel offering to be similar or around the $3,000 mark, but it could be a lot higher.

28 cores ~ they already have the 18 core btw don't bet on them releasing it anytime soon. I'm sure Intel loves that Xeon more at $10k vs $4k ;)

How does this not make the front page news here? This was 3 days ago...and I'm just now finding out about it...today...on YT(since I don't do tom's hardware). :wtf:

Are you blind? The TR2 @ 5.1 on Liquid Nitrogen just barely beat the Intel 28 core @ only 5.0GHz and only on a water chiller. The 2990W is 32 core. So a higher core CPU beat a lower core CPU, news at 11. LN cooled verses Chiller, LN2 wins, news at 11.

Only a 4 Core difference at a much much smaller price

Also Chillers can cost just as much as LN2 and still offer cooling close to LN so that point is moot. Fact is both had extreme cooling that no average joe would be using or even consider.

So that fact of the matter is they are testing a 6K plus part to a sub 2K part that offers just as many features and better performance in the server market that utilized the extra cores

Water chillers cool the water down below ambient temperature. LN2 is sub zero temperatures. I don't see how the cooling is similar.

18 vs 32 cores, cheaper still & if that doesn't persuade them nothing ever will :shadedshu:
FX processors are dirt cheap, they have 8 cores. They have more cores than i3s and are cheaper. Means nothing. Cores mean nothing if the programs you are using don't take advantage of it.

Not an EXTREME CLOCKER or such but your Comparison/costing is way out
LN2 one Shot Replace each time you need to use. ( Set up time and Safety precautions) and LN2 is Expensive
Chiller fire it up and go >>> (as Used by @Knoxx29 and Others ).

Your point being? Users can run 2 instances of the program, or run different programs, set affinity to 16 core each and get the multiple jobs done! You think someone will buy an 18-32 core monstrosity for web browsing

No. Not blind. Nor ignorant. I know it's probably not the most epic win in the history of benchmarking. But it's still a win. And a significant one. Maybe Intel strikes back in the end. Maybe they don't. Proof is in the pudding.
really ? significant?

i really root for amd in hedt cause they're really offering good value to the segment where value was never good cause of intel's monopoly, but this is just 3% on friggin LN2. I know it's nice but Jesus dude, chill, it really looks ridiculous celebrating a tiny benchmark win like this, especially when the playing field was uneven due to cooling. And you're being arrogant to people cause of this ? Are you serious ?

The first part of my response was obviously responding to the world record bit as I mentioned LN2, I thought the 2nd part mentioned how good it was at stock as well?

The current fastest "workstation" Intel chip, the E5-2699A v4 goes for almost $5,000, and it has 22 cores. So who knows what they had planned. AMD used to set their prices according to how their performance stacked up to Intel. I think the shoe's on the other foot now.

BYW, Intel's current crop of 28 core server CPU's (8 way scalable):

Not that AMD's cheap with their 2 way server chips:

Yes, really. It's significant because the Threadripper 2990WX is:

  1. A $1799 processor that outperforms what is likely a variant of a $9999 processor. Clock speeds and cooling aside, that's a big deal.
  2. A real thing that's going to be released in 3 days. Whereas Intel's competitor is essentially mythical. Nobody even knows for sure what it is. Or what's really up with it. Or when/if it will ever even be released. Or how much it will actually cost when/if it is(could be more than $9999). At this point it's nothing more than a PR stunt. Intel's current line-up of CPUs are obviously nowhere in the same ballpark Multi-Thread performance wise. This thing smashes the similarly priced i9-7980XE to pieces(in Cinebench R15 at least, but likely also in many Multi-Thread workloads).
  3. Unlocked for overclocking out-of-the-box. Whereas Intel's competitor, if based on the Xeon Platinum 8180, is not. So if you buy the 2990WX, and install it in an ASUS ROG ZENITH EXTREME X399 motherboard, you might actually be able to reach 5.1GHz with it. If you were to buy the 8180...even 5.0GHz is not likely happening. LN2, or custom made Gigabyte motherboard, or not. Retail components vs. basically not-even-real components.
  4. The current Cinebench R15 Multi-Thread single socket CPU World Record holder.
I don't feel like I'm being arrogant, or the need to chill. I was just a little surprised that it's not a major news story is really all. Considering all the hype and hoopla regarding the Intel 28 Core what-the-hell-ever-it-is, and how much coverage that got. And I think this story deserves to be told just as much(if not more). So that's what I'm trying to make happen. And yes, I'm serious. But probably not as "serious" as you think I am. I'm not all worked up about it...if that's what you mean.

With the right conditions a chiller can achieve sub zero temps

I have managed -5 on a FX 8350 with a chiller some years ago when I use to compete on Hwbot

What you seem to forget is this is aimed at server and creation market when the cores will be used to full potential. Can’t compare apples to oranges as the latter is aimed at the consumer market for general use and gaming.

I think every tech site covered threaripper 2 line up and how it stomps intel's hedt offerings atm. All of them unilaterally called TR2 the best value cpu in hedt and said intel was in deep trouble (serves them right for all I care). That was a major news story.
This, however, is not a "major news story", sorry pal, it just isn't. I'm an intel precessor enthusiast (in the mainstream segment) and I know almost everything about them, yet I have never paid any attention to world records of single core performance or clock speed. Literally, throughout all those years there's not even one article i read about that.

Water chillers cool the water down below ambient temperature. LN2 is sub zero temperatures. I don't see how the cooling is similar.

FX processors are dirt cheap, they have 8 cores. They have more cores than i3s and are cheaper. Means nothing. Cores mean nothing if the programs you are using don't take advantage of it.
2018 called ,said it's multi core aware since like, let's say a while, and while You in Your perspective might not use more than 4-8 , outside of your bubble some needs more.
I mainly shouted you out for the Bs Fx jab my vega'd 8350@4.5 wilk play a few games that an I3 can't, and many more at settings it couldn't match i assure you.( Though it is crying out for an update)

@cucker tarlson ,we are not all the same as you either.

Pop those bubbles dudes ,step outside the box , realize that what you do/think means just as little to most ,as their thoughts do to you.
