Threadripper is it dead or will we be getting a socket change?

As most everyone who comes onto this site regularly, AMD does not have official support for next Gen Threadripper on their updated Road map. There was talk yesterday at E3 that AMD are going to release next gen chips for Threadripper but with the die shrink and the new 3950X it makes the current gen of TR4 CPUs not obsolete but much less appealing. What is appealing though is a 32 core Threadripper chip that has all of it's dies connected to the memory controller. My only fear is that you may not have the option of dropping it into existing TR4 baords. In fact TR4 boards are very compelling right now with some of the drastic price reductions we have seen you can get boards in the $320-$350 range. Even the Gigabyte Designare EX is just north of $500 now. I remember that being the most expensive consumer board you could buy period.

If the X570 boards are going to be more expensive than their X470 counterparts what will TR 4 boards cost?

I'd say it'd be getting a node change, it will have to compete with intel's upcoming Cascade Lake-X anyways, and to keep it on 12nm would be wasteful. AMD will have TR coming as the socket is supported unti 2020, I believe they might get rid of the "X" lineup in threadripper and stick to the "WX" branding with TR as the mainstream has moved up in core count.

Yes that was on the previous road map. I don't believe they are going to 12nm that was the 2900 series chips. The next chips (if they come) should be 7nm.

That's why I said to keep it on 12nm would be wasteful, TSMC already has 7nm available to use and if they were to refresh it and interest people in actually buying a new TR it'd have to be 7nm.

I apologize the title should have said socket change. That was what I was thinking when I said node actually, sorry for any confusion.

Good thing you can edit the title then...

Also, new boards are in the pipeline, as to what they will be, I don't know, but AMD has not told the board makers to stop working on new products.

Done thanks for that. OK so you know more than I do but any information is good. Hopefully at the next trade show (PAX West) we will get definitive Threadripper information.

Several publications have reported AMD reps confirming that there will be a 7nm Zen2 TR refresh, so I wouldn't worry. As for motherboard costs, they will rise compared to X399, but not by as much as X570, simply due to a lot of the cost increases of X570 (more PCB layers, better PCB quality) already being in place for X399. There'll be a slight bump due to the redrivers needed for PCIe 4.0, and of course the cost of the chipset (reportedly about $40 by itself, which is crazy for a chipset), but I wouldn't expect base model TR Refresh motherboards to have too much of a price increase nonetheless.

Nah, don't expect it until Q3/Q4 and it's unlikely AMD will announce new Threadripper products at a PAX event.

I have zero doubt an updated TR will be launched. A late Q3, early to mid Q4 announcement seems very likely. The delay is probably more about meeting demand for the products they have already announced, chiefly demand for EPYC2. Remember TR is more closely related to EPYC than Ryzen.

TR4 socket has enough pins to last a very long time.

X399 does not have PCI-e 4.0. I'm expecting an update to the platform to support that, the biggest bragging feature of Zen2. X499 anyone?
Also:
Threadripper really didn't do that well, especially under Windows. Puget Systems' benchmarks consistently show that TR is beaten by Intel, even by the 9900K. Now if you can run it under Linux, TR crushes Intel. Hopefully AMD can address this as well.

There's a link at an unreliable source claiming 64 core TR incoming this Winter/Spring 2020.

With the node shrink to 7nm, a 64 core Threadripper makes sense and is to AMD's advantage to release ASAP to continue increase their technology lead. I would definitely forgo upgrading to 16 core Ryzen to save up for a 64 Threadripper monster.

This is stuff home server dreams are made of!

AMD claims to have worked closely with MS to improve the scheduler (making it CCX aware) and overcome the quasi-NUMA issues of previous generations of Ryzen/TR for Zen2 - and most of those improvements should be backwards compatible and included with the most recent Windows build IIRC. It's all in their Ryzen 3000 slide deck. This still won't fix TR's relatively low boost clocks and uneven latency, but it can do a lot for nT scaling and hardware utilization outside of the most multi-threaded workloads.

More like easiest feature to brag about. The biggest bragging feature IMO is the massive IPC boost but that is much harder to easily quantify and advertise.

Well, isn't another big selling point of TR the number of PCIe lanes? That's how I've always saw the value in it...first cores, then PCIe lanes. In looking forward to a next gen chip, I'd be looking for cores, PCIe lanes (which goes hand-in-hand w/ PCIe 4.0), clock speed increase, THEN IPC. It's kind of the gravy of the whole meal.
