Hey Lads!
Howz it hanging?
Well here's the story!

Yamaha AV Receiver RX-V363:
http://www.yamaha.com/yec/products/productdetail.html?CNTID=567569

2x TANNOY Mercury F1 custom:
http://www.tannoy.com/ResidentialSu...BRAUDUElEBQMyODArODWDMNGCNDxdzbbkTxMtFyyNUQ==

Now I am thinking of getting a sub.
But I first need to know if I need an active or passive sub :p

I have been checking on ebay and I like this one:
http://cgi.ebay.ie/LTC-ACTIVE-HOME-...omeAudioHiFi_HiFiSpeakers&hash=item5193ffb5f0

It's got 100W and it's very affordable!

Any advice would be nice lads!

Well for that amp an active would be the wise choice(I also run a Yamaha RX-V661) I run a full 5.1 set of PSB on mine(Alpha series), which has a Subseries 1 Sub with it

http://www.psbspeakers.com/Alpha-home-theater-systems

The first set.(Actually I was happy to be able to get them here in Norway as they are a
Canadian company)

But yeah Active is the way to go

Benchmark Scores Meh benchmarks.
I got the bigger brother of this one and does a real nice job
Polk Audio PSW Series PSW10 or even this on PSW505 does depend on your room size on how big of a sub you need.

Just remember these are American and i'm not sure if your converter can handle this as well.

Best bet is look for a tannoy sub as it should give the better match in sound.

If you want better sound tighter bass get some stands that you can fill with a fine sand and use spikes. This isolates the base more to what the actual speaker sounds like and tightens the bass.

Alright I will keep with the 10" instead :p

All I need to do is just connect it to the receiver and an outlet and I am ready to go?!

Correct. I believe most of them have an automatic start-up that switches on & off when not being used. You'd have to read the directions for your subwoofer to verify this.

Yeah mine can be wired up a few ways. "Full Range" so it has an active crossover in it for that application or the way your gonna wanna run it off your amp is thru the sub out on the amp(RCA). Your sub will automatically kick on when it gets signal.

Oh and 8" will be tighter than 10" ;) I have played bass for well over a decade so I know bass :p 10" will be more pronounced "coloured" bass("boomy") and 8" will be tighter and more balanced sound.

Benchmark Scores Epeen!! Who needs epeen??
Derfinately get powered, 10" will be tighter/cleaner but will not get as deep as a 12" or 15". How big is the listening room? Another thing to consider is are you looking for something geared more toward's movies or music? For music you will want a sealed sub and for HT a ported unit is the better choice.

I am a n00bie bass head and run both type's in my setup  I have a Velodyne dls-3750r which for it's size is a remarkable unit and to compliment it i assembled an Elemental designs a7s-650 DIY kit

I think's safe to say my neighbour's don't like me! I live in an apartment btw :rockout:

Check out hometheatershack.com, avsforum.com and audiokarma.corg for some great info on A/V gear

sttubs: That's great! cheers!

INSTG8R: So I connect it to the receiver VIA the RCA connection?
Since you know bass :p 8" or 10"?

jasper1605: Yea I prefer the wooden look for some reason :p i dunno why! Just my kind of thing :p
I like that bass! pretty pricey tho and 500W at it's peak!! jayziz :p
That is way too much for me :p
I only need 50-100W really :p
My room is small enough and is only used for my pc!

adj408: Just save small bits like me :p Every little helps :D

m1dg3t:
You would suggest a 10" active sub then!
My room is just a usual room! Not too small and not too big.
I really think 10" is more than enough!
hmmm... well I do watch movies quite often and watch plenty of Tv shows too.
I listen to music just as often too! Like I love listening to BASSDRIVE internet radio. Plenty of Booming music :p
But I also play plenty of games too!! BFBC2 is the main one right now :p

If you were to suggest something that will do the job for everything if possible!
Please suggest something or a link!!

Cheers for the sites!

Yes, A connection to the mains as well to the speakers. Your A/V should have a sub connection you just plug it in there with the 505.

I found a Tannoy sub but it's pretty expensive. Those Polk ones turn them selfs off too well the 505 does at least.

Speaker brackets suck for speakers unless it's for the surround sound speakers. Some good stands ( Thick ) not the skinny ass pole crap.

Thing is your paying those ripp off prices which makes it hard to find the better ones and if thats not enough you live in ireland which bumps the prices up again.

Brands i used to like in the UK were KEF Tannoy ( selective ), Mission.

More into your price range
http://www.superfi.co.uk/index.cfm/page/moreinfo.cfm/Product_ID/3810

Way over it
http://www.superfi.co.uk/index.cfm/page/moreinfo.cfm/Product_ID/5462
http://www.superfi.co.uk/index.cfm/page/moreinfo.cfm/Product_ID/4760

Other wise check this link out and see if you can find any of the discontinued cheaper ( Near the bottom
http://www.superfi.co.uk/index.cfm/...subwoofer&search_button.x=0&search_button.y=0

It's how i got mine cheap and saved me near $400 but America is good for that even more so when you have places like Newegg.

Ideally you want one with a LFE on the back of it so you do not need to connect it too all your speaker outputs. And the LFE connection is for plugging in to the sub connection on the back of the A/V.

And bass is only boomy though bad gear or setup. Hence why i use fine sand in my speaker stands.

I must ask this! Since I got to connect the woofer to the speakers too? I don't see how I can do that?
The speakers only got a black - and red + connections which are already being used.

How am I meant to connect them to the sub?

I like the first one you linked me too!
How much of a difference would they be from each other?
I mean, is it really different when I go from..lets say a 100 euro sub to a 300 sub or even 200 sub?

Looks like you will have to pick out the best sub for me! Not let me do this because I know I will feck it up one way or another :p
HELP ME!!!!!!!

Looks like you will have to pick out the best sub for me! Not let me do this because I know I will feck it up one way or another :p
HELP ME!!!!!!!

The pic a example ( PSW505 ). The LFE will connect right to the A/V just a single wire and if you look at the picture what you do you connect the amp to the input and with more wires you output to the speakers.

Main issue i see here is if you don't want the sub were your main speakers are. In my case i use the LFE as it allows me to place the sub better which is behind me which in fact gives me better extended bass than having it were the main speakers are. But this all so depends on the size and shape of the room too and if i only could use the speaker connectors i would have to trail cables back and forth.

There used to be at least one in Birmingham which used to sell used and new stuff. SuperFI are one of the most expensive i believe on top of the UK being much more exspenive in the 1st place lol.

Here's another place i used to like
http://www.richersounds.com/search/tannoy

Which here's one but dont know how good it is
http://www.richersounds.com/product/subwoofers/tannoy/sfx-sub/tann-sfx-sub-blk
http://www.richersounds.com/product/subwoofers/cambridge-audio/s90/camb-s90-blk

By any chance Amazon ship to you ?. Maybe you can find some thing on there.

There is this one i see on ebay but it's going be US voltage.
http://cgi.ebay.com/Tannoy-TS-8-pow...em&pt=Speakers_Subwoofers&hash=item27b385fa32

And i have never used a clossed type sub so dare not say if it be better although i would think that the bass would be possibly tighter but as i said thats a guess.

Why i went for a open type sub was parly based on some Tannoy Mercurys i used to which were front ported and would thump the crap out of you lol. Don't make them like that no more thats going back to 1982\3 lol

Jayziz man with all these speakers you made what was meant to be a simple quick find into a lustful amount of subs that I can't choose from :p

I really want those feckin Tannoys!! But the price is just too high right now :(

My best bet is to just stick with the cheaper stuff!

The LTC which is like 100 euro or the HYUNDAI which is 130.
I suppose if I waited until next weekend I could go for the more expensive TANNOY SFX sub!
Ah jayziz!!!
me feckin head!

AsRock!!!
What do you think :p
Is the HYUNDAI up to the job?

depending on the size room even one of the small 6.5" subs may work. i run a PSW10 and a 6.5" noname and they sound good together. the 6.5" is definitely taughter and the 10" boomy. i wouldn't get anything large it will over power the small receiver and speakers you have

When using line level connection on a sub, either LFE [mono] or stereo [L/R - red/ black] there is NO need to connect the Hi level (speaker wire's). Hi level input is for connecting the sub when the source does NOT have a sub out. This way the sub AMP/crossover pull's the Low's out from the signal and then passes the signal along to your speaker's (usually the main's FR L + R). Line level connection's are made with RCA style cable's, i say style because they are a single cable as opposed to a pair. I like to run my sub's in stereo as i find it provide's a more enveloping bass experience as compared to LFE

For your scenario i would suggest getting a Polk, they seem to be best bang/$$$ for less than $200 - $250. Plus Polk is a reputable MFG :)

Don't forget your sub/AVR will have level adjustment's so you can fine tune the output to match your room/system ;)

Cheer's! :toast:
