Got about 1800 to spend on upgrades. Things i dont need, got a gpu 2070 and psu EVGA supernova 850, and using the viewsonic elite xg270qg I dont need any peripherals. Im currently running the 2600k and want to upgrade. Any ideas on where to start? I havent had time to keep up with all the latest tech. Easier to build or is there a place where I can buy a barebones with the mobo/cpu already ready to go in a case. I do have a microcenter about 15 minutes away, a frys about 5 minutes away and another frys about 20 minutes away, just throwing that out there.

Not the best time to upgrade right now, to be honest. It won't be much longer and new CPUs will be coming out.

for the motherboard i would choose one of the following:

msi x570-A Pro
asus tuf gamming x570 plus
msi mpg x570 gaming plus

for memory:
look for +3600mhz cas16 memory. go with 32gbs sense your budget allows and i assume you dont want to mess with this latter.

for the cpu:
ryzen 5 3600-(if you plan to upgrade to ryzen 4000 this year than this is a good cpu to hold you over till then) OR ryzen 3700x, or just get the 3950x if you want the best in this series.

for storage:
whatever size you believe you need. go with m.2 pcie based ssd. look for ones with Max Sequential Read 3000MBps and above and Max Sequential write 1100MBps and above. if you need more than this for games and storage i recommend sticking a 512gb ssd as the primary drive and picking up an hdd for mass storage. only you really know what you need here. just make sure its sata 6gb/s and 7200rpms spinning speed along with 128mb+ cache.

for Cooling:
i personally would look at the new scythe fuma 2 or the noctua nh-d15.

All these components are well within your budget and will get you a beast of a system. personally at this point would get the ryzen 5 3600 and wait for ryzen 4000.

If you only game and nothing more than an intel build might be more appropriate. the difference is small between the new ryzens and intel but overall the ryzens top intel as being better well rounded for more than just gaming. the difference is small between the 2 and as the resolution gets past 1080p than the difference is almost not there unless you start to look at high refresh rates 144hz+.

some more information as to how the machine will be used can help us better help you.

Intel is a terrible buy right now only the 9900k makes sense and only if you pair it with a 2080 ti.

The new 10 core coming out from intel also probably makes zero sense and I doubt the 12 thread i5 will be priced in a way that it makes sense over a 3700X

The Noctua D15 performs slightly worse on a 3900X but it probably will not matter on a 3700X.

this monitor is OCed at 165hz at 1440p. I gotta take advantage lol

that first build looks good. forget to mention i do have Amazon prime. I live about 20 minutes away from a microcenter, and I have 2 different frys within traveling distance

You need a faster gpu honestly for most modern games @1440p/165hz but definitely that 2600K is holding you back as well.

The majority of what is in the first build I own its great. I have the platinum version of the cooler but it currently isn't worth the price difference.

Gigabyte z390 gaming x

And dont take advice from ppl tell you look at sequential speeds for a m.2 SSD
Get one with Toshiba bics memory.mp510 is a great option,so is cs3030.

Honestly I wouldnt but a z390 now, dead platform.ryzen 3700/3800 mostly fine for high refresh gaming but you're getting around 9600k gaming performance.

Maybe just get a 3600 and upgrade when ryzen 4000 is released.3600 OC is like 6700k OC,it is gonna be faster than 2600k for sure.

If current Intel, maybe a second hand 8700k+board if you can get a good deal on them.

dont wait until next gen arrives its a long way to wait
intel didnt even bother showing the next gen at ces 2020
amd ryzen 3 4000 is coming but closer to q4 2020 likely end of 2020

for now id get a
ryzen 7 3700x
ddr4 3600mhz either 16 or 32gb
a good x570 motherboard because pci-e 4.0 and most likely compatible with next ryzen cpu should you decide to upgrade

as for intel, bit hard to recommend as they are still relatively expensive dont get me wrong they are good cpu for gaming but just still pricey
if you want..
i9 9900k
but keep in mind z390 doesnt have pci-e 4.0 meaning if you put in pci-e 3.0 ssds they will be limited at 3500 instead of getting 5000mhz-6000mhz range
gpu wont be much of a diff 3.0 vs 4.0 but you never know until you see benchmarks for the next release

I would get a Ryzen 7 2700X because its remarkably cheap for its performance, good air cooler like Be Queit Shadow Rock Slim or Cryorig H5 Universal, X470 or X570 motherboard like Asrock X470 Gaming K4 or Asrock X570 Steel Legend, pairing them with G.Skill, ADATA or Team 3200 MHz RAM. That with RTX 2070 Super (eg. Colorful RTX 2070 Super Advanced OC), Silicon Power P34A80 256Gb M.2 2280 + some 2-4 GB 7200 RPM HDD or same capacity 2.5" SSD if you have enough money, some nice ATX case from AeroCool, Silverstone, InWin... and you'll be golden.

The dude has $1800 to spend ... why recommend a 2700X over a 3700X? That's just foolish.

All he needs at this point in time is a motherboard, CPU and RAM. He has a solid foundation as far as GPU and PSU goes.

That's where my money would go for now. However, I'd probably go for a 3900X for the extra performance all round. Grab a nice set of RAM too. Check either store, find which is cheaper overall, and go there. Micro Center typically gives you $20 to $30 off for buying a board and CPU together.

100% agree and check with Microcenter if they price match my local MC does, I got Asus x570 Crosshair VIII Formula for cheaper i saved like 200$

If you want the best frame times it will be worth going for a kit of b-die memory to overclock... The minimum fps advantage you get from running very tight memory is disproportionately large compared to the average fps advantage in most cases.

3600 is a fine baseline, but at that budget stretching to a 3900x isn't really a big deal... Though assuming Ryzen 4000 is compatible with existing AM4 boards, it might be better to just stick to the cheaper options for now...
