hiya tpu,
im still alive so the time has come where a couple of product cycles have passed and we now have, ddr4 a full refined implementation of m.2, another improvement for usb , kaby lake-s processors and pascal titan gpu's.

so I originally thought a 6700k sky lake cpu would be a slight upgrade with 10-15% improvement roughly over my haswell cpu@4.4ghz.
I researched this and in doing so found Kaby lake-s was about to be released.

this changes things as kaby lake-s is going to be a much faster desktop cpu with a 600mhz improvement @stock boost clocks (4.2ghz) over a 6700k's 3.5ghz.
I also found that intels tick/tock(process/architecture - shrink/refine) schedule had been modified and now their cpus are being brought to us using shrink/architecture/optimisation. meaning that kaby lake is an optimisation.
quote - Summing up the 14nm family of processors, Broadwell was the first to utilize the new process while keeping the architectural design close to Haswell. Sky lake was also 14nm but brought significant improvements on CPU and GPU side. The Kaby Lake processors are termed as part of the “Optimization” process which means Intel will be able to extract more performance and better efficiency from existing Sky lake designs.

And so the upgrade is on hold while i wait for the 7700k kaby lake cpu and 200-series socket 1151 chipset to drop. although those with a big enough budget should wait for the broadwell replacement X series with 6,8 and 10 core variant.imo

my next thought was to upgrade the gpu to a titan x pascal while i wait and use the m.2 connection on my current maximus extreme to upgrade my hard drive ready for my new system.
I started reading about the new titan, with 3584 cuda cores and the faster gddr5X memory. i was about to buy one when I came across a leaked document about the next 1080ti. this card will virtually be as fast as the titan only the release date is January. Nvidia is probably waiting for AMD to release the RX490 with the vega gpu only I think this could possibly be a dual polaris10 gpu instead. either way this doesn't change much for me.

my decision has been to upgrade now and I will be placing an order for a new TitanX gpu later this month, I'm going to pick up the m.2 hard drive although the Maximus VI series mPCIe Combo II card only supports upto 2242M.2.
I found a 512gb 2242 M.2 card only I'm not sure if the asus m.2 combo2 card has X4pci speeds.
I'm literally researching this right now, so if anyone has any experience with the asus m.2 combo card. I would appreciate a heads up on the maximum bandwidth I can expect.
answer- asus m.2 combo card is connected to pcie2 giving a theoretical 600mb/s performance. when using the drive you will also have a sata port disabled on your motherboard.
the best route to go is to buy an adapter and make sure you buy a x4 pcie NVMe compatible drive like this one https://www.amazon.co.uk/dp/B00L0LFDQE/?tag=tec053-21

or wait for the 200 series - The motherboard features the LGA 1151 socket which we know would allow support for both Kaby Lake and Skylake processors on 100-series and 200-series platforms. It should be noted that Kaby Lake would only be supported on the 200-series platforms. The CPU socket is powered by a single 8-Pin power connector while the board is powered by a 24-Pin ATX connector. Expansion slots on the motherboard include three PCI-e 3.0 x16 and three PCI-e 3.0 x1 slots. There’s also two M.2 slots capable of delivering PCI-e x4 speeds. Storage includes two SATA Express and 6 SATA III ports.

wow that's 2 nvme capable M.2 slots for 40000+mb/s raid wow!
thanks in advance.:toast:

Set control panel -> power -> cpu min state -> 100% when gaming, call it a day. Get used 1080 and sell it for 1080Ti later.

lol ok thanks for your input... please don't advise people to buy a 1080 so close to the 1080ti versions release. no one will want a 1080 when the ti version comes out. it uses the same die as the titan like the previous generation. and will be nearly as fast with an extra 500 cuda cores.

also setting power to 100percent when gaming. is that supposed to be relevant to M.2. sorry but your not being clear.

thanks anyway... buy a 1080 lol youll be telling me to buy a skylake cpu next... :0

The cpu min state is relevant to effective clock speed. The 1080 suggestion was qualified by the adjective "used" ... as in don't pay full price. 1080Ti is rumored January which implies Feb availability, that's like 4 months away. You gotta use something. I owned og Titan and Maxwell Titan X. No way would I touch Pascal Titan X for $1200 + $113 tax and s/h. I located a used 1080FE myself for a nice price. Spending more than twice as much for 30% gain is silly.

Dude, not everyone wants to pay all that cash for not that big of a percentage of performance boost. Don't you dare tell people "don't tell this to so and so" because it's not your place to tell people what to do. I'd totally get a 1080 for my 5760x1080 because I'm not going to justify a 1080TI for that resolution. Ever heard of "to each their own"?

M.2 drives aren't everything as you think. You sure you didn't get your info from some bs site?

from one of the bullshit websites I look at http://www.computershopper.com/feature/2016-guide-the-best-m.2-solid-state-drives-tested -Speaking of PCI Express x4 M.2 drives that support NVMe, those are quite rare themselves. The only one we've tested as of this writing is Samsung's SSD 950 Pro. It's indeed an impressively fast drive, leaving the fastest SATA-based drives far behind, but apart from the aforementioned motherboards, very few devices currently support it, or support it at its maximum speed. So, as we said in the previous paragraph, be sure you know your system supports that drive before picking one up. You don't want to bring home one of the fastest consumer drives available, only to find your system won't boot with it installed.
ok but you make yourself sound inexperienced with this comment. ive seen many product cycles and deal in hardware. always the same people buy the 580 680 780 880 980 only to regret not waiting for the Ti version for a full product cycle. I'm not telling anyone to do anything. this is all my opinion and your welcome to ignore it. put me on your ignore list. imo:toast:

so far through having to prove M.2\isn't crap ive managed to find the info I needed on them. its the NVMe (Non-Volatile Memory Express) compatability added to pcie which has helped to make the drives extremely fast. I'm looking at buying a pci m.2x4 adapter or purchase one of these.
Mangstor MX6300 - Direct Attached PCIe NVMe Solid-State Drives
Up to 5.4TB Capacities, up to 3.7GB/S Transfer Rates, up to 900k IOPS

now that is decent! imo

Vega isn't a dual Polaris and it's not the Polaris architecture either (though it's probably a refinement). It should, if rumours are true be a good match for 1080, if not 1080ti, if AMD can get the 4096 shaders at a decent clock speed with the die shrink on 14nm. Vega is rumoured to be released for professional use late 2016 so that card should tip what the desktop variant will be (much like GP100 hinted how hefty GP102 would be).

It would be really weird to order a Titan X (pascal) knowing that there is (a) a 1080ti just round the corner, January is rumour, and (b) with a DX12 smashing huge Vega chip from AMD also touted to arrive. As for CPU, the only reason to go for the KabyLake specific chipset Z270(?) is that it will purportedly support Intels new memory architecture that is meant to arrive on later 2017. It will also have more PCI-e (24, up from 20) lanes but how important that actually is depends entirely on your usage. The Intel memory solution (Optane) should be even faster than current NVMe.

And, um... without trying to piss you off - you've got 10 years service dude - whats with the triple posting?

I know that vega is another gpu dude. I can see it on the roadmap. but the next amd graphics card could be dual polaris10 and not vega. that's what I thought id written. my punctuation isn't so good I suppose.

as far as buying a titan instead of waiting for the Ti model being weird. its perfectly normal for me to either buy amd and go crossfire or buy the best card NVidia has to offer which is the titan which has an extra 200shaders. and remember this. I like to benchmark my stuff...

the triple posting is there just to piss you off. :)imo:toast:
