time to upgrade

so ive updated my system specs on the left over there, im curious is it time to upgrade my cpu and motherboard, i have been considering doing a build with the thermaltake p90 case, doing a custom loop or semi custom loop, but i i have been waiting on the CPU to become an upgradeable item and for some time its always been a side grade and not an upgrade. i have been out of the loop on CPU info and tech for a while, so if some of you could chime in and let me know what you guys think

this pc serves multiple uses, i use the 3 monitors for work, emails, spreadsheets etc, but then when its time to close down the home office, i also game on a single screen, with music, discord, web pages, youtube or twitch etc running in the back ground, the reason i have the processor i have was at the time is was one of the better processors for video encoding/rendering and multi tasking. so my primary focus is good frames while getting some nice high quality recordings.

i dont have one in mind id like to see what people would consider all options of different price levels, i dont typically want to spend $1,000 on the top of the line, say i9 9700k

i still would like some opinions on what cpu people are using/ recommending and what they think ill see performance wise vs my current system, if its a $600-700 upgrade but the performance gain is negligible then i think most would agree its not worth the money spent.

Well OP in my opinion the easy budget upgrade for you will be to get the 3930k and keep the rest of your hardware.....3930k with 6c/12t is still very respectable cpu + when is properly OC becomes a true monster....

If you want something new now, go i7-8700K, you'll get a 6C/12T. Better encoding, better multitasking, better FPS due to higher clocks and newer features with the motherboard.

If you want to upgrade on the cheap, get a used i7-3930K on eBay for $100. You'll get slightly lower performance compared to the i7-8700K and will lack all the newer features like the support of M.2 SSDs. Compared to your current chip, you wont notice much difference if any gaming wise but encoding wise will be night and day.

AMD will release new CPUs in the coming months, if I was you, I'd wait.

I'm in the same boat as you are, except my current CPU is one step up from yours while staying the same generation. From my position, for me to upgrade and the upgrade yield enough performance to justify the costs, I'd be looking at the $900 price range for an Intel based HEDT system. For this, I would be able to reuse my Deep Cool heatsink currently on my 3930k.

AMD would be considerably less at just short of $750, even though I don't have the mounting hardware for a AMD based system for my heatsink and would have to buy a new one.

Both would be very nice upgrades from your 3820k based system.

One question you ask is if it is time to upgrade your cpu and motherboard (and RAM too). I don’t know that we can tell you that. An X79 with a 3820 and 16 GB ddr3 has been outclassed by current offerings. But....

For what you are using it for, I don’t get the impression it is lacking. If it is fine, then you don’t “need” a new one yet. However, if you want an upgrade, then yes you would probably notice the increased performance. Just make sure you really want to spend the money right now.

GSkill DDR4 16GB 3200 CL14 (you want this model for AMD because it is the well recommended Samsung B-Dies, good for Intel builds as well)

I don't know much about Threadripper motherboards but others on here might have some recommendations.

Also you could do the Intel HEDT option, but I also don't know what to recommend, maybe X299 AsRock Taichi or Fatal1ty models and i9 7900X 10 core 20 thread or i7 7820X 8 Core 16 thread

I think the 8700K is the best CPU right now for price, performance. If it doesn't have enough threads consider 7820X or 7900X. I don't know if the Ryzen R7 1700 will have enough single thread improvement to justify the cost of going from your 3820. You could get a 8600K but you mention that you do a lot of activities that would benefit from more threads so the 8700K might be a better fit, it is about $100 more.

I do similar things with my 8600K, doing some streaming, recording, discord in the background. Doesn't seem to be a problem for it, I took a gamble that I wouldn't need hyperthreading since I don't think the 3770K I had before was really much better than a 3570K for what I was doing.
