[tip] Utility to check software is up to date - SUMo

I just came across this today. I thought I'd share it:

What does it do?
It scans your PC for software and their version numbers
It then checks if your version is up to date
It creates a list with what is up to date, and what needs updating
It provides a direct link on the software that needs updating to a download site.

Benefits
Quick and easy way of checking your programs and utilities
And updating them
It can export the list to txt and excel
Very useful for creating an AUDIT of what you've got installed

Careful
If you install, install using custom options and REMOVE all the crapware
When running the program and clicking links, click the correct download link to your software, not a link to crapware

Personal Software Inspector by Secunia is the best.

And tiny PatchMyPC utility is ok too.

Thanks for the tips. I just tried them both.

Secunia installed a Windows Service. It looks nice, creating lots of icons, but no list. It recognised 115 up to date programs and 13 needing updating. It listed the names of the programs. There is little information or options. It didn't give me a link to the download

PatchPC doesnt require installing... it is a runtime executable. It looks terrible. (Broken skins... might work on your PC but doesnt on mine). It found 15 updates. It lists the names of the programs. There is little information or options. It didn't give me a link to the download

SUMo looks OK. It has a "console" look to it. It recognised 134 up to date programs and 68 for updating. It lists the names of the programs and the developer company/publisher. There are many more options than the other two tools. It gave me a link to each download for each program.

SUMo wins.

I use SUMo, but only the portable version (.zip) as the installer wants to install some, shall we say questionable, other software.

Secunia PSI used to be one of my favorites, until they 'dumbed it down' with version 3, I no longer use PSI.

I just gave PatchMyPC a try; I was not especially impressed.
