I saw the trailer earlier, and I liked it. Being from Respawn of course it's gonna feel a little CoD'y but it's different enough to be interesting.

The trailer had me interested. You can tell that it came fro mthe minds of COD, it has a similar feel and for some reason the huge identifier for me with COD is how the points pop up for kills and such, the font they use and the way it's animated (I notice it becuase for some reason it bothers the shit out of me, it doesn't feel like it belongs ingame, it's too noticeable, just doesn't seem to fit). But beyond that rant, it seems better here, but I can still see that point similarity. The gameplay looked fun, if it is as intuitive as they let on (wall running, climbing on mechs) then it should be pretty fun.

I didn't notice the use of Source engine, that really has me puzzled. Published by EA and using an engine from Valve, especially for an FPS where EA already has their hands on a great FPS engine. Very interesting indeed, I wonder if they will go more into detail on the engine choice, I hope so.

Yeah I thought the Source engine bit was strange too at first, but since Acti probably has exclusive rights to the Id based IW Tech engine and Acti has partnered with Valve before, I guess it makes sense. Seems like a travesty if West and Zampella can't even use the IW Tech engine.

I don't see why that is, it's not like any of the titles they worked on using the engine pushed any new boundaries in about 5/6 years.

I never said it was the best engine to use, just their baby, and let's face it, even if it's a bit outdated, it's still better than Source.

EA publishes Valve's games for console.

As far as Respawn using Source, there are possibly one of two things going on. Infinity Ward modified the Quake III engine for CoD, which Source was built up from so it might not be all that different from building a CoD game. Also, they're putting it on PC and will be using Steamworks so why not roll with an engine that already includes everything it needs to have 100% compatiblity with Steamworks.

That, and I'm sure Respawn will be modifying the engine for uses like they did with Quake, so should Titanfall ultimately work out they'll be calling it by a different name in future iterations.

Honestly, Source is still a good engine, sure it looks dated as hell when you play some of the games that are made for it, but I was impressed with what Valve did with it for Portal 2. DOTA2 looks great as well, although that's not FPS.

Yeah it doesn't take much to make a Portal game look good though. It has fairly small and simple environments. Titanfall would have looked awesome with something like Frostbite 3.

Unfortunately, Frostbite 3 didn't exist when Titanfall went into development.

Even Frostbite 2 would be noticeably superior to Source.

Yeah well even if you go way back to Frosbite 1, I still think it would look better than Source. Source just seems like an odd pick out of not just availability, but familiarity.

Funny how I was originally just going to say Frostbite, but I guess we were fated to have this back and forth dialog. LOL

Source is still a great engine, regardless if there are better available. Frostbite is dope, but I wonder what the cost between licensing either engine is? I mean, at the time they started developing the game those guys were paying for everything out of their own pockets plus suing Activision for royalty payment that never materialized.

The outcome of that trial was never made public last I read, but from the sound of it, they did get some settlement that appeared to be to their satisfaction. They were reported as having big grins on their faces I recall.

Just the apparent secrecy of the outcome that was agreed upon would seem to indicate Acti would be made to look even worse had it been allowed to be divulged.

The good thing about the Source engine is it's very scalable, it will run fine on the lowest spec machine.
