So far i havent managed to run many benchmarks, from what ive run so far it seems to perform much better than the 8800GTX. Yet i think it can give more. For instance, in the video stress test in Counterstrike source, i get around 280FPS, while with the 8800GTX i was getting around 190-200. Maybe its my CPU ? Do you think its bottlenecking it?

Your CPU might be bottle necking... might want to get a quad.

you dont need a quad, just OC your current CPU to around 3.8 or so.

yeah those e6850's aren't pushovers. Just get some more OC out of it.

BTW A slow quad bottlenecks more than Dual's at this point in time because not all game utilize all four cores, thats why at this moment in time unless you have a q9x50, i7, or Phenom II it's probably better to have a fast Dual Core.

Thank you all. Right now it is at 3.4Ghz ( will try to push it farther later ) and it shows significant improvement.

Exactly. From my experience with OC'ing a c2d and using a 9800gx2(which is roughly equal to a gtx280 maximum performance wise), the increases in performance started to drop off at 3.6, so 3.8 is what I decided to go with(my cpu can do 4 gig 24/7, but there's no need IMHO). Also keep in mind, your e6850 is basically the same as my e8400 performance wise, with the main difference between to 2 chips being your is 65nm tech and mine is 45nm tech.

CSS is limited to 300 FPS usually anyways. Go to console and type "fps_max 0" and it should uncap the FPS.

But yea, OCing your CPU will help you out a lot too.

Well, the biggest performance difference comes from the extra 2mb L2 cache and the extra SSE instruction on the e8400. I'd say his at 4ghz would be around yours at 3.8ghz.

Anyway though, don't forget to oc the card itself. 285s have some massive oc'ing headroom, so find some comfortable oc's on it for non-stressful and stressful games. :toast:

Don't get offended, but this thread seemed like a joke to me. I mean, complaining about the GTX285 "only" giving 280 fps, people recommending a new CPU to improve that, people recommending overclocking to improve that. Come on...

I know that a better CPU or OCed CPU will help liberating the GTX285's power, but please wait until he has some better benchmark to talk about. lol how much higher could CSS go? any game TBH?

I think such high fps MUST be poisonous for the monitor. So many fps would make your monitor go mad, because it will be unable to choose between the 5 frames he will have available for every one frame he must show. j/k

LOL, just overclock the monitor to 300Hz :D

I never said he had to OC. He asked a question, and I gave my opinion on the subject. What else was I suppose to do? If he spent the money on a GTX285, why wouldn't he want all the performance out of it? Why should he settle for performance he could get out of a GTX260 when alittle bit of OC'ing would give him what he payed for?

BTW, judging by my computers performance, I'm willing to bet those 280 fps in CSS equals only 28 fps in Crysis(very high 1920*1200). So considering that little fact, yes he could use alittle OC'ing to get more from the GTX285, although it isn't needed to make the game playable.

Man I was just kidding and just pointing out the fact that CSS is not precisely the measure that should be used to judge the performance of a modern card. There's no way you can guess Crysis performance out of CSS performance, because not only the performance on cards in CSS is not linear, but neither is coherent with the power of the cards when cards are overkill for the game. For example my 8800 GT does 200++ fps too, but I have seen other 8800GTs doing worse, but wait, that's not what I was talking about, in one of those same PCs, I've seen a 9600GT doing better fps's than the 8800GT did, both stock. That shouldn't happen, but it happens.

I said "judging by my computers performance", which should be just about equal with his computer's performance(I have a just a tab bit better CPU and he has just a tad bit better GPU),depending on the OC's of both systems. I get between 25-30 FPS playing crysis at 1920*1200 very high. That's why I made that statement. And yes, OC'ing definently helps on my system.

I just can't understand why are you arguing about that. I didn't said what you said is not true. I said to left CSS alone when it comes to modern graphics cards. That's all. :toast:

Uh i guess i must say that i wasnt offended by anyone. Thank you all again for your answers. As for the CPU i have raised 3.46Ghz, i dont think i want to raise it any higher now ( i worry that i may fry it :p ).

Also, i know that CSS isnt the best for benchmarking there is ( on a sidenote: i believe that Far Cry 2 has the best benchmarking tool i have ever seen on a game ), but as i didnt had much time today before i had to leave for work, i wasnt able to run anything else :)

I am excited to see your results. My GTX280 Overclocks extremely well and I am thinking it may be a cherry one. So it will be nice to see what a GTX285 can really acheive. The smaller die "should" yeild a better OC.

turning up the mhz won't fry it, turning up the voltage will. As long as you stay under 1.4 for CPU, you'll have absolutely no problems. That cpu can actually take +1.5 volts without frying, although I wouldn't keep 1.5 going though it 24/7.
