Dont look good for them at all. They might have to start spinning off or selling off parts of the business.

Im guessing WD or Seagate would pick up the hard drive division because of ip that are acquired through acquisition of OCZ.

Thats one less player on the hard drive market anyway uf worst comes to worst

WD were forced to divest(sell) their 3.5" Hitachi assets to Toshiba to keep them from getting banhammered, so I don't imagine they'll be allowed to re-acquire those assets.

Could be interesting to see WD buy their SSD controllers though...

Toshiba profits were overstated by $1.2Bn.... Sounds like an awful lot til you compare it with the $63Bn they made in sales. :p

fair enough, Somewhere along the line i think i might of missed this. I was under the impression that WD still held part of the Hitachi business.

Interesting enough though when it comes to SSD controllers, I think WDs mainstream SSDs are currently using a sandforce based controllers according to a few sites on the interwebs although they state that WD has never confirmed what controller they were using when asked.

Sandforce is owned by Seagate and if WD got their hands on OCZ or Toshiba tech then this might bring their prices down a little. Not as much as Samsung though but maybe a little better,

Toshiba products never attracted my attention (poor marketing!?) but my mother have a netbook from them and working without problems for about 5 years.

I do not want them to leave the market anyway. :(

Please WD. Seagate has lost all my confidence due to the all money wasted on their short lived hard drives (I hope it changed, it has passed some time last time I checked).

Just my opinion.

I'd be interesting to see Seagate buy the 3.5" division. So 2.5" Hitachi drives are made by WD and the 3.5" Hitachi drives are made by Seagate...

Though I think WD still makes the 3.5" Hitachi drives. What happened was that WD was forced to sell off manufacturing assets(the equipment necessary for manufacture) to Toshiba for 3.5" drives, so that Toshiba could manufacture their own 3.5" drives. Basically, WD was forced to create a 3rd competitor in the 3.5" market.

Same here but thats not how they make money, TOSHIBA make most of their money though having their microchips and such in other brands. Like back in the day opening a video recorder with a digital display would typically contain a SONY chip this is the same with TOSHIBA and in that would would likely find a TOSHIBA chip int heir to even more so in TV's.

Now you see TOSHIBA nand in SSD's now same ol thing.

I do wounder how many people feel pissed with TOSHIBA for not supporting all of OCZ ssd's, i know i am one and do actually avoid them now haha.

I would not be surprised one bit if i found a TOSHIBA chip in either of my A'V's either.

I'm almost positive they still own the Hitachi 2.5" factories.

They also hold their server lineup of 3.5" drives... the famous Ultrastar line. Also those Helium drive things.

Those were the Deskstars (What Toshiba now owns :p ). The Ultrastars never had such a repuation because they rocked in reliability. It was pretty much the only thing they emphasized.

I had a Deskstar too, and an RMA, and another... eventually the store just told me to give up and buy a Seagate. :p

I feel like Toshiba really needs to do more for OCZ. They've really turned things around since the disastrous old days, but they need Toshiba's help in marketing and erasing their damned reputation. AFAIK the only thing OCZ has gained so far since the acquisition is the change to Toshiba A19 for NAND (which was a fiasco because even as the 460A began selling, the old Vertex 460 was still selling which was super confusing and made a quiet launch even quieter) and the fact that Toshiba slapped its logo on an SSD controller that probably isn't theirs (read Anandtech's take on the new Trion SSD). OCZ's new RMA policy is one of the clearest and best I've ever seen (theoretically) and no one even knows about it.

I think erasing the negative experiences left by OCZs previous products is probably the very last thing on Toshibas mind at the moment

True. But I'm still not sure what they've been doing for the past little while with OCZ sitting on their hands.

You said that there would be one less player on the HDD market if Toshiba goes. But that's assuming that they were a significant player in the retail market in the first place. The only place where Toshiba's consumer storage solutions are prevalent is within its own products, since Toshiba is an OEM. Their fast SSDs are OEM, and OCZ, well...OCZ is OCZ. There are lots and lots of cheap Toshiba laptops but they haven't made any meaningful ventures in desktop replacement or ultrabook markets. Heck, most desktops and laptops by Dell and HP come equipped with Seagate.

They arent as much as an OEM as you think. They sell a lot of rebranded Hitachi drives. They make their own SSDs though some what budget to mid-range minded compared to the rest of the retail market. I cant comment about what they do for the industry side of the business but they are there.

You say they havent made any meaningful ventures in desktop replacement or ultrabook markets. The same thing can pretty much be said about every other laptop/desktop manufacturer out there so i dont see the point you are trying to make.

Toshiba aint all about computer hardware you know? They have a hand in lots of different markets.

Taken from Toshiba's wikipage:

"Toshiba offers a wide range of products and services, including air conditioners,[32] consumer electronics (including televisions and DVD and Blu-ray players),[33] control systems (including air-traffic control systems, railway systems, security systems and traffic control systems),[34] electronic point of sale equipment,[35] elevators and escalators,[36] home appliances (including refrigerators and washing machines),[32] IT services,[37] lighting,[32][38] materials and electronic components,[39] medical equipment (including CT and MRI scanners, ultrasound equipment and X-ray equipment),[40] office equipment,[35] business telecommunication equipment[41] personal computers,[33] semiconductors,[42] power systems (including electricity turbines, fuel cells and nuclear reactors)[43] power transmission and distribution systems,[34] and TFT displays.[44]"

anything pc or laptop related makes up a small percentage of their business as a whole. but they are there and they are giving the consumers a choice. Maybe people dont want something different because different costs them money - Loss of sales etc etc - ask microsoft about windows 8/8.1 and they will tell you they tried to change things up and people crucified them for it even though the people had a legitimate reason to run riot. Not everyone could get around the removal of the start menu and they werent given a choice to turn it on or off if they wished for it.

I think youre missing the bigger picture here.
