It would prevent soooooo many arguments on these forums if there was a general consensus that a post is bad, rather than a series of back-and-forth “arguments” amongst aggrieved parties as to why it is, much like good posts being affirmed prevent users from contending them.

Having moderated high school and college policy debate forums for many years, where those users actually all knew each other IRL and debated their contentions amongst their peers in tournaments with more qualified judges with transparent values/curricula, I could go on and on about why this feature would prevent a lot of trolling, but I’ll leave this dumb up/down vote “question” system to do the talking for me.

I appreciate that this forum doesn’t want to alienate users/revenue with such a function, but some posts are just bad, misleading, or uninformed, and the moderation here leaves a lot to be desired, regardless if that’s a problem of a lack of time on moderators’ part or a lack of clearly defined forum rules (on those debate forums moderators are elected yearly and rules are debated, which is something I don’t think this forum is ready for).

Hope you will consider; thanks!

Solution
Wow, this really popped off! Thanks to the three or four users who responded substantively with, you know, words instead of feelings. As for the 70+ other negative reacts, well, lol

Don’t worry, no one here has ever hurt my feelings, and I’m not interested in policing conversations (although I am curious about the nazis analogy — huh?) — that’s what moderation is for. I mean, I’ve debated many of you to all ends of the earth, and have had many of my posts deleted as well. Not fishing for likes here (obvs), but if you think I made this suggestion to prevent polite, sometimes elevating to heated/trolly discussion, then you probably haven’t interacted with me. :) No one is on my ignore list because I like the diversity of opinions...

Personally I think there are lots of like fishers on TPU. I don't give a rats what people think of me or my comments. As long as it's not a personal attack on someone i will post it, if you don't like it. couldn't give 2 sh!ts and a f*ck.

And got to vote NO

If you don't like someone's comment, move on.

TPU tried just this about a decade ago, but it didn't work out well, increasing arguments and drama.

I was initially in favour of it too, but after seeing the results, I don't think it's a good idea. It just gives people more opportunity to be difficult and unpleasant to others.
I just put idiots on ignore now.

I'm also not really into ingore lists, so far I have no one there even tho there are some users around here I don't get along with 'brand fanboys and such' but eh I just pretend they don't exist or their posts.
Not worth getting in trouble over them, that much I learned myself.

TPU is still much friendlier imo than the previous tech site in my country that I left visiting when I registered here, I mean when even a mod trolls and makes fun of you cause of your hardware/preferences you know something is wrong with that place and I'm not ok with that.

Just do the mature thing, ignore them. Literally, put the people on ignore that cause you issues - whatever they may be. I have a handful of people that I've put on ignore simply because they toss out a lot of trolling type responses to people and don't contribute to the conversation. Not all of the posts these people make are irritating to me, but they make enough that it's just easier for me to generally have them on ignore. If I really want to see if they contributed to a topic, I can click on "Show ignored content".

I see no reason to have any kind of like or dislike for posts. If you don't like what others are posting, don't reply. Just skip over it and move on or if those people really irk you, put them on ignore.

The best policy appears to be not even reacting to a post if you haven't got anything to add to it, negative or positive. Probably best just to move on.

Like I said-If you don't like someone's comment, move on.

Sometimes commenting just antagonises the commenter and is not worth the trouble. Though to a certain degree me saying it is pot calling the kettle black.

This. Even copying the 'like' system from Facebook was a bad move in my opinion. It doesn't serve anything but circle jerk. I don't want TPU to be Reddit or FB. I don't want to fish for likes. I sincerely don't care what most people think. Don't WANT to care even. [ ... ]
I've seen some forums that have an Agree reaction, that'd be more useful imho.
I am kinda torn about this, fundamentally I agree with you that fuckbook's like system should burn in hell, however I can also see the virtues of it (if slightly adapted, mayhaps); it can cut down on spammy Yeah, I agree-type of posts.

I've never put anyone on ignore no matter how much they annoy me. I've never thought it a particularly good idea either, because they can be saying all sorts of crap about you that everyone can see and trashing your reputation / credibility, but you can't see it so you can't defend yourself and / or report them. On my forum however, I can ahem, just deal with obnoxious users. ;) I've not had anyone like that so far though, thankfully.

EDIT: clarified wording.

Hi,
Typically you hope forums went back to a real rep system
Where you couldn't rep someone over and over until your fingers falls off and had to spread the reps around to 30 other people before you could rep people again

But here it is triggered facebook/ twitter/... reaction system advertised lol

We had this once in the distant past. I liked it more.

The real issue TPU has to contend with at some point, is many of it's users are inherently toxic. Naturally, those users will oppose such a system, while simultaneously calling users calling for it hip terms for being emotional.

No, I am not talking about everyone opposed to such a system (a lot of you have valid points), but if you think I'm talking about you and already feel a massive keyboard response coming on, I might be. Sorry.

You changed your nick back ;)

Nah, I'm still hanging on my opinion. Giving negative rep is just a weapon to attack an user which you don't like even he/she have relevant things to post.

So nah, let's keep this as it is.

I mean just reports for toxic posts could work if we enforced appropriately, but then you get the inevitable cries of "censorship!"

I dunno. Just spitballing.

Mmh, that's exactly the bad side. I mean if I'd be a mod, I would need to check all the reported shit and there just would be too much work to do practically. I mean, I like this current line here.

It would prevent soooooo many arguments on these forums

No it wouldn't
People will still instigate and argue no matter what emojis exist lol

It's up to Report and then Moderators will have to step in period.

Sorry.
There is a certain divide that some people like the frankness and others such as yourself who display zero respect for other people all the while calling scab commentary.

People are supposed to bring their character. We aren't psychopaths virtue signalling and mimicking others, we are supposed to be genuine.

Actually one thing that would be nice

I was recently locked out of the Windows 11 General Discussion thread, and it would have been nice to know this was just a 1 week suspension and not permanent.

I also seem to have two warnings but insufficient privileges to read them...

I'm genuine, a genuine pita.

Yes. Yes you are. :D

No idea where this will go but it has been discussed before and all you'll get is partisan thumb-waving. And don't we have angry face emoji's to show our malcontent?

And, as a mod, can I say, nobody asks to be a mod, and if they do - they certainly don't get asked to become one (you want power - you can GTFO). Usually, we have to sleep with the site owner for 7 nights under a blood red moon and if he likes us, we stay. Don't ask what the supermods need to do.

But seriously, as a mod on this forum, it's good to see such an active tribe of reprobates (that's the mods) trying to chaperone the entire gamut of political and social ideology. Do we get it right? No. Do we care? A little. But do you guys have fun giving us such a hard freaking job to do that rewards us with sweet FA? I don't even know. But hell, it's a fun ride.

But if I can ask one thing? Just try and be nice to one another, regardless of how much of a butt-muncher you think the other person is. Peace out you mindless trolls. :rockout:

It would prevent soooooo many arguments on these forums if there was a general consensus that a post is bad

Just a thought... if we did science this way, it might hinder progress; perhaps the same for technology.
