triple channel memory question

for the new core i7 boards that are triple channel...if i just want to get a 6 gig kit (3x2 gig) i would simply fill the even slots and leave the odd slots empty, right?

But u can also fill the 2 , 4 ,6 slots or just the 1,3,5. Sorry double posts.
