TSMC has quickly (over a span of years, but still) become the de-facto silicon manufacturing giant in the industry. They produce silicon-based solutions for almost all the significant tech companies (NVIDIA, AMD, Apple, Qualcomm, including the silicon manufacturing leader of yonder, Intel), and are on the forefront of new fabrication technologies. Just today we've covered how they are already well on their way to their second-gen 7 nm (N7+) fabrication technology with usage of EUV, and carving their path forward for 5 nm (N5).

As a result of becoming the key manufacturer and supplier in the industry, the company's revenues have been steadily increasing, and the outlook just looks great for the company, provided no significant snags appear in their R&D and manufacturing departments. For Q3 2018, TSMC reported on consolidated revenues of NT$260.3 million (US$8.41 million), up 11.6% sequentially and 3.2% YoY (year-over-year). Market watcher are placing this increased revenue over strong performance of NT$, not on increasingly robust chip sales - the new iPhones don't possess the same upwards-push as they did before, much because the ceiling has only become higher. However, the fact remains that TSMC is "looking good" in its market entrenchment opportunities and is carving a swath of new products and supply opportunities to fuel its growth.

I take offense at that! I'm over 40. The conspiracy thing may be right though.

As for TSMC.. Good for them, I guess. I only truly care about the PC market though. Which they're only beginning to be involved in. And probably not much, at that.

You are over 40 and believe that "evil" and "greedy" companies like Intel, Nvidia, Microsoft deliberately increase prices for their products. 40 years old with a username StrayKat?! What kind of username is that?

KAT are my initials. Stray because I didn't intend to stay long.. but I ended up liking the place. So now it's just funny to me.

I never said anything about evil companies. That was the other guy. I was joking.

Uh okay. Sorry, it's just I read tech news regularly and people here are always complaining without any reason and hate tech companies from Nvidia RTX price increase and Intel 9th generation.

Well, for the record, I have nothing against most hardware companies. I do get a bit antsy about software - specifically cloud and/or social media based stuff, like Google or Facebook. Since our own data is involved.

What about them? I was arguing about that with other users on techpowerup the other day. They really believe that Google, Facebook and Microsoft especially spy on people. Which is crazy! They collect data to improve OUR own experience with their products, advertising (because they have to earn money somehow). It's so paranoid to think that biggest tech companies are even interested in most people.

A company is measured by what their bottom line is..

Microsoft is an actual tech company. I do believe the fear about them is unwarranted.

Google and Facebook OTOH survive off of advertising. And the product is YOU. This is not really a conspiracy. It's their whole profit model. And it engenders far less trust to me than MS.

Yeah, and I don't have issues about this. I use their free services and they collect my data. No problem, it's not like I have something to hide anyway. Techpowerup users are so scared and paranoid about this like they are some kind of cyber-terrorist, drug dealers, and owners of midget porn and hentai library. Lol

It's not paranoid. It's just the principle of the matter. It might be a regional thing as well. A lot of us are Americans. I am at least. I live in the wide open spaces of Texas. I have few friends and like being left alone. I like my country's laws (when they're actually followed), and putting a primacy on individuals rather than corporations/police/States/collectives/etc.. So I'm naturally inclined to distrust anything that hampers any of that.

I don't use any of it either. So it's not like I have anything real to worry about anyways. I'm just glad I can make this choice. If other people want to use them, so be it. I'm not trying to stop them.

It might be regional thing. But I think that people can put their trust in Western companies and especially big ones like Google, Facebook, Microsoft. I believe that they will never use data for bad intentions and spying, it would be all over the news and give them bad reputation. Why would they ruin their own reputation. And I live in Kazakhstan (Borat Country) and here local ISP REALLY spy on you, so have to be really careful at commenting about government, president and other stuff, phone talks are recorded and can be used against you in courts and NOW this is the issue which you don't have in the US. You can literally go to White House and have protests and rant about politics and government, but you go to square and even if you are alone you will be arrested in 5 minutes. Like in North Korea. Yep, regional thing.

They don't do it by accident. When companies dominate the market prices go up because they can get away with it for the benefit of their shareholders (not customers). If TSMC gets there the same will happen. There is no conspiracy there, it's common sense and why monopolies (or anything near that) are best avoided.

TSMC is not a monopoly right now though... not even close. Them growing in capacity is only a good thing, IMO.

If you want to get in a debate about privacy and what consitutes spying, I am happy to do so, but please make another thread.

Btw, I read last time that TSMC will be doing some 14 nm chips for Intel, how is that going? Do they had to redesing from scratch? Cause TSMC does not have a 14 nm foundry, so will they use a 16/12 nm or 10 nm design, or what?
