I used to be a Sony guy, when TVs weighed as much as a small woman. I do like my LG's though.. I'm sure there are better brands, but they have been good to me and my family over the last decade.

I got a year and a half out of my Sharp, and 2x Hisense died just after 2.5-3 years of use, ours for the living room, and the kids tv in their room. Both were bought within a few months of each other lol.

They both said QC inspected, but I have my doubts..

My LG 43" Full HD LED TV died after 2 years.
Very likely failed LEDs! You most likely got the "blue hue of doom"/"purple hue of doom".

I not too long ago, saw the "blue hue of doom" on a hospital waiting area TV! I immediately knew the LEDs were bad!

it was actually the power supply. status led stayed on, but this thing wouldn't turn on.

I'm still a Sony guy deep in the heart, my parents' 1080p TV is a Bravia from 2014 that I ordered for them and it's still going strong. The only thing that it needed was an external box for modern HEVC decoding on TV channels.

With the limited amount of models to choose from, I guess I'm left with TCL 50C635. I hope it doesn't have so fucking horribly slow menus as our current Philips 43PUS6262. It's incredible how much can manufacturers fuck up. Four core CPU in a thing that is no supercomputer and doesn't do much processing at all, and they still manage to screw it up.

Now that they can show ads within the UI they can have all the bloat they want.

I got a 4K 58" Philips with ambilight, no Philips TV's in your country?

View attachment 280539

this is awesome!!! can't say I have ever experienced anything like ambilight before... I hope the LG C3 42" has it, I plan to get it for my PS5, lot of nature documentaries I want to watch this way... the ambilight would give nature documentaries a really nice flare I think

Ambilight technology is patented by Philips, no other brand of TV will have it.

There are some aftermarket TV backlighting kits, but unsure on how well they work and latency costs involved.

Hmm, I am going to see if Philips has any OLED ambilight coming... this is good to know.

Yeah, this is an ill of the modern smart TV. Their user interfaces have ads. Most of the time it's for some new show on one of the the major streaming services, so they're rather relevant but still ads.

Samsung for their part includes a free digital TV service with lots of actual channels on it named Samsung TV Plus on their new sets, my 2022 The Frame has it and it's usually some local news channels plus some extra content, which IMO is a nice value add.

I'm looking for a new 4k/50" tv and don't know shit about them (and I don't care). In the price range I am looking at, there is the choice between TCL, Hisense, Gogen, Sharp, and Hyundai a JVC. The first four I never heard about, Hyundai makes cars and JVC I thought was dead since the time they made video cassettes.
I presume most of these brands are lowcost junk, so the question (intentionally asked without specific models) is - does it even matter what I choose? You can't tell what panel they use from the specs anyway, and the rest doesn't matter (I guess).

It's not that brands in particular are more junk than others, it's that the price point you're looking for is just not regarded as being filled with quality products. 4K60 is a low end segment these days, and honestly I wouldn't expect more from a Samsung/LG/Sony 60Hz panel than a Hisense. If you're looking for snappy performance it's probably not easy to find, these TVs are only ad good as the SoCs they run on and companies sure aren't putting their best foot forward for 4K60.

Only up around NANO90, Q80B, X90K etc. territory do things start getting serious, and the price tags of those are way up there.

That said, Hisense U6 series gets recommended a fair bit if that sort of price isn't too much for you. Just look at some reviews and keep your expectations in check

As long as you filter it through DNS or keep it completely offline it should be fine.

Ooh a ol Triniton guy huh.

Yeah would not trust those brands either, how ever got to remember most TV's or monitors will fail when these really high brightness settings are used.

And you just don't know how some one has used it to have a real clear idea if it's a quality thing or a user just having the brightness so high it just burns them out.

In fact, I recommend that you get nothing less than OLED! (starts with an "O")
Me too, but bear in mind ALL consumer OLEDs are WRGB layout pixels.

As long as you filter it through DNS or keep it completely offline it should be fine.
This. Don't even let it go online.

I picked up the new TCL micro-led and while it was good when the picture was still it was a bit blurry in motion. I returned it and picked up an LG C1 OLED 65" last year and wow it's much better. The C2 is out now. I wouldn't get anything other than a OLED. I can't wait for the Micro-OLED TV's to start rolling out, but in the mean time you can't go wrong with the newer OLED tv's.

EDIT: I just saw where you said OLED is out of your price range. I have a TCL TV and it's a great TV. You can't go wrong with it. I'd try to get a Micro-LED for the brightness. The Micro-LED TCL TV brightness was amazing. If it didn't look so blocky in motion I would have kept it.

The TCL is pretty good. Menus are fast, picture looks great (compared to the old one at least).
The Google system is HORRIBLE, and seeing Android on anything else than phones just gives me creeps.

Recently went with a Hisense U8H. It's oled with motionrate 420. It's hit and miss for PC useon its 2x 120hz HDMI 2.1 ports but should be ok for series x/ps5. Highly recommend if that isn't a deal breaker for you.

Recently went with a Hisense U8H. It's oled with motionrate 420. It's hit and miss for PC useon its 2x 120hz HDMI 2.1 ports but should be ok for series x/ps5. Highly recommend if that isn't a deal breaker for you.

OP mentioned:
let's say under €630. 4k, 50"

50", I'd take this one:

Is there any point in updating the tv when it's primarily being used for watching films from the NAS, and rarely for watching the regular tv channels?
I couldn't even find any entry in the options to check for updates. Maybe it can only be updated through Google play? If that's the case, screw it, because I am not logging in that damn account from a device that has absolutely no privacy controls, adblocks or whatever. I'm not paranoid, but I'm not giving Google anymore personal information than necessary.

Benchmark Scores They're pretty good, nothing crazy.
I've had good luck with LG - way fewer problems than with other brands in my case.
