The United States Government on Monday announced a new set of rules for U.S. companies exporting technology to Chinese firms directly or indirectly associated with the Chinese military, according to a Reuters report. The vagueness of what constitutes a Chinese entity that could supply derived technology over to the military could create confusion and uncertainty.

The new trade regime would see U.S. companies requiring to obtain a license to export technology to China. The U.S. also did away with exceptions to older rules that allowed U.S. firms to export to civilian Chinese companies without a license. "It is important to consider the ramifications of doing business with countries that have histories of diverting goods purchased from U.S. companies for military applications," Commerce Secretary Wilbur Ross said in a statement. The new rules will also require U.S. companies to file declarations of goods exported to China, Russia, and Venezuela, regardless of value.

Anti-transshipment clauses are basics of any trade embargoes.

This isn't surprising, restricting exports which may benefit foreign military is a standard practice. Hell, it applies to EU/UK exports as well to some degree.

And in that vein, I have way less issue with this than the standard trade tariffs on normal goods... though I have mixed feelings on those as well. I'm unsure my initial criticism of them was as warranted as I thought, but time will tell I suppose.

Tariffs are a result of having made strategically poor choices in the past. We all have when it comes to China. And it hasn't stopped either, and it probably won't in the next ten years. Its a knee jerk response with no long term perspective though, so no, its still not going to help the US at all. China can drop its goods anywhere, and they already have emerging markets galore. Africa, Asia itself & S. America, EU.

The effects of this policy can not be felt yet, that will happen long after Trump is gone. The battle between China and the US is about leadership and right now, China has won virtually every battle in that sense, even despite us knowing they seriously screwed up with this virus. For many countries they are blessing and curse. Remarkably similar to US leadership ;) Huawei bans and not having a 5G alternative in house yourself, plus trade tariffs are just signs of a bad loser, not of a winner or leader.

Sad... but true.

Oh, I completely agree there. Just not sure whether that battle can be won or that ship has sailed.

As far as America competing on a global market in manufacturing, I'm convinced those days are over (our people won't work for a third world wage and thus can't compete). But maybe someone better than China can take over, I certainly would not mind.

Well, strangely enough Corona might be an eye opener / opportunity to accept higher wage production domestically. But as far as I can tell, cheap labor is still a thing everywhere... even in EU... seasonal workers underpaid to get veggies out was a thing just recently even over here, even despite corona, go figure. They didn't even get protective measures and tend to live bunched up together. People don't give a shit as long as its cheap and China played that card and still does. No amount of hipster videos about 'do it yourself' efforts will change that I'm afraid.

Automation is our only escape, I guess.

Mass automation requires a shift from a wage-earning society, otherwise, mass unemployment will destabilise everything.

Base income. Social welfare is going to fall apart now anyway with mass unemployment. The momentum is now, if ever. We are already wasting billions... but without any perspective. Its strange if you think of it.

I see no other way to solve this eventual issue. Everything is going to be automated soon so eventually as the YouTube video of the same name suggests, Humans Need Not Apply. Robots will do everything.

China care about that though ?.

To do transhipment you need a buddy nation that's whitelisted in America. They don't have any. They aren't about to smuggle packages via say, North Korea.

tl;dr: Doesn't matter what they think, they don't have a say in it.

People will always find a way, loophole, backdoor etc...to get whatever they want whenever they want. We unfortunately have been living in a society for the past 15 to 20 years where most peoples mentality has been of a "throw away" lifestyle. Gotta have that new phone, purse, whatever..just for the sake of having it. When a country stops manufacturing it's own goods, and depends on another for supply..they have you over a barrel and are spanking you good. I'm not trying to start anything political with this post, it's just we have to wake up and see what is really going on today. what is needed is a serious change of thinking that i fear will never happen. If you want change..it starts with you.

It's never happening here and people who tell you any western nation is thinking about that are nuts. It's the antithesis of western ideology.
