installing the m.2 disables some of your SATA ports, read the manual for details on which ones.

Kind of strange though, if the 960 is using the PCIe bus. Or is it?

It is, but the SATA ports are also going over PCIe. Since there aren't enough lanes going to the CPU, some ports are disabled while others are in use - pairing is listed in the board's manual, hence my first post.
It's one of the reasons I look forward to CPUs raising the number of available PCIe lanes sooner rather than later.

the last Z170 board i looked at had 2x M.2 slots, and using both left the board with just two working SATA ports.

part of the reason i went ryzen this time around, i find it genuinely disgusting to have a motherboard with all these features that then turns around and says 'oh yeah, you cant use them all at once'

Hehe, my mobo has 3 M.2 ports. If you use them all, the only SATA ports left are those coming from the AsMedia controller :D

There r a difference between NVME and SATA based M.2. SSD's.

NVME based uses PCI-E and SATA based uses SATA connections on the M.2. socket.

Yes, I've heard before that sticking in a NVMe SSD should not preclude the usage of the associated SATA ports. However, that's not what the manual of my motherboard says. And that's why I suggested the OP reads his manual - Idk how that mobo works.

Pretty easy to figure out just take the m.2 back out and see if it boots

time to swoop into the bios and make a few changes, set the sata to pci-e and mode to x2 or x4 whatever the bios will give you.

Are you on the latest mobo Bios?

Just to add, my particular mobo recognizes my m.2 drives in different ways, depending on my Intel RST/raid settings in the BIOS. Maybe the OP has the same issue and needs to mess with something similar.

This mobo is also weird for having u.2/m.2/sata and turning different ones off depending on which slot is active. It's less confusing than it sounds though. Like others said, the manual should cover everything.

I own two motherboards that have one M.2 port each. An MSI A320 Grenade and a Gigabyte AB350 Gaming
In one of the motherboards when installing an M.2 everything goes fine, but in the other motherboard you get 1 or 2 sata ports disabled, depending on which M.2 you install. If its a SATA M.2 you get 1 port disabled and if its a NVMe PCIe 4x M.2 you get 2 ports disabled.

So, if you really need more sata ports, you will need to go for a PCI express card like this one:

yep, this one
if you are lazy just switch the sata ports then set it again through the bios
(except you have bad board)

Use different SATA ports, and if you have none spare - use less SATA devices. This is a limitation of your board.
