Hi, I've just upgraded my pc from a skylake system into a comet lake system and the driver for my hd 6950 cannot be installed in this system. I'm wondering if there is any solution to my problem here.

Things i have tried:
- Tried installing Catalyst Software Suite v15.7.1 WHQL
- Tried installing Radeon Software Crimson Edition Beta VCrimson Edition 16.2.1 Beta

Current system spec
- Aorus B460 Pro AC
- I5 10400f
- DDR4 2400mhz

Previous system spec (Radeon Hd 6950 working fine)
- MSI B150 Gaming M3
- I5 6500
- DDR4 2400mhz

Hello,

Have you tried uninstalling the drivers completely before installing the new one?

In Device Manager, right click, select "Uninstall" and make sure to check the box where it's asking you to remove all traces of the driver.

But it seemed to use the right driver tho.

I'm really not sure tho, those old cards on new system are unsupported officially.

Hey thanks for the replay.

I tried uninstalling the drivers completely and even used DDU to uninstall drivers in Safe mode. Besides, the last resort was that i reinstalled windows completely and that didnt help.

Out of curiosity, if you click "uninstall" then "Detect system changes", will it install properly using Windows 10 Default drivers?

Yes indeed after a few minutes if windows update is enabled but it still wont function correctly. Is it possible that my card is faulty after i upgraded my hardware? i dont hve another system to test it, nor another card to test if my board's pcie is faulty.

Yeah, it's an old unsupported card, might not be compatible anymore? tho I can't find resource on the web that would confirm that.
But even the windows driver says there's an issue with the card?

You can test your luck by updating the bios of the motherboard (probably won't change a thing, but we have nothing to lose) and try the GPU on the second PCIE slots.

you can install this by Right clicking and going to the compatibility tab and the selection either windows 7 or windows 8 compatibility. Do this before you install the drivers

The next step you want to do is disable Automatic Driver updates in windows 10 updates. With out doing this it will break the driver or control panel of the old ATI cards.

I'm running a much older card a HD 3870 where the automatic update feature would disable many usable parts of the control panel features.

Usually just getting AMD auto detect to pick drivers, or manually selecting from the legacy list works out. I've got older cards that work just fine with Catalyst drivers. If I remember I'll pull up that desktop and check which it is.

I was wondering the same thing but I can confirm; 15.7.1 is the last legacy whql, and 16.2.1 beta is the last legacy beta driver.

Yeah some thing like that then they went to Crimson or what ever, but by installing the legacy driver you could then install the crimson driver. Well i could with my 6970.

Go to amd driver downloads and install their graphics detection software. It will find the latest functional driver and point you to the download then install it. I just did this the other day on a new ryzen build with 6950 and it worked perfectly even gave me the newest adrenaline clocking software and driver functionality.

Unfortunately i did try the auto detection and the driver wont install. Maybe i have a faulty card.
