Hey guys am unsure of what would be a suitable replacement for my 5870 i have started to notice it drop in games lately. I just wanna no what to get that is gonna see an fps increase.

Price range? a logical step up would be a 7850/70 on the red side or a 670 on the green side.

I was looking at no more that £300. I like the look of the gtx 580 or the 570. I also liked the look of the 6970.

The HD7850/70 is not an upgrade to his HD5870. They roughly have the same bandwidth and Flops. A real upgrade would be a HD6990 or an HD7970.

assuming you mobo has Xfire support, some else may know

according to W1z's review both cards are better then the 5870. Also Toms charts show the 7870 hovering with the dual gpu 5970 and in some cases even the 7950

7870 would be an excellent upgrade from 5870. According to w1zzard review, 23% average performance jump at 1920x1200.

Less heat, use less power, and better performance, what more to ask?

My 7850 plays around with 580/7950 ( if you over clock a 7850 and a 7870 to the same level the performance difference is around 5-8% which well is piss all considering the price difference)

Considering he could sell his 5870 and use that money to buy a new after market cooled 7850 it's a pretty darn good no cost upgade.


It will also completely tear apart a 5870 when it comes to math performance.

Go nvidia. The 580 is a steal where you can get it for around £250 (sometimes less) and even £300 is ok.

Aye but when you take over-clocking into account the 5870 ends up around 480 levels of performance.

The 78xx cards end up an awful lot faster due to the much higher over-clocking potential.


So considering price/power draw and overclockability the 78xx cards are far superior to 58xx cards.

I don't agree, but that tends to happen from time to time. I wouldn't spend all that cash on a new video card to only get a marginal performance boost. What I'm saying is go for something much better, not just slightly better.

do this and await next gen, i got a 5850 (for 85 quids )to add to my 5870 both waterblocked run at 1Ghz and equal (allmost) a 7970 and the next gen will eclipse this gen if reports come to be true of nvidias 40x or somesuch improvement next gen, Amd will have to counter some hows. and no game i play is unplayable on max settings bar batman AC and thats with physx on . at 1080p theirs no probs and no probs with xfire on my ancient gfx's

I'm curious, is 530W enough to power CF 5870?

Get the 670. It's around 5870 crossfire in terms of performance.
