I am looking to upgrade my Phenom 1090t and ASUS M4A88T-M (which lacks USB3 and SATA3 support) to a new mATX i5 or Piledriver platform.

The major reasons I am upgrading are for USB3 support, SATA3 interface for my SSD, and the higher IPC of Intel CPUs over the Phenom/Thuban (for CPU-intensive simulation games like ArmA2/3 and DCS World). I also plan on playing Battlefield4 on this system. Because the jump from a 1090t to one of these processors is not huge, I would like to keep the price of the motherboard as low as possible. I don't plan to do heavy overclocking, but would like to be able to do some mild overclocking in the future.

These are the combinations I am considering:

1) MSI Z77MA-G45 ($89.99) and 3570k ($219.99)
2) ASUS Z87M-Plus ($139.99) and 4570k ($239.99)
3) ASUS M5A97m ($89.99) and FX 8350 ($199.99)

Is it worth the extra $70 to go with a Haswell build, or should I go with the older Ivy Bridge build? Will the MSI Z77MA-G45 be sufficient for my needs (solid gaming board, mild overclocking ability) or should I look for a higher-end mobo?

And finally, how much can I expect to sell my current CPU and motherboard for?

Thanks in advance! :)

Looking at your needs I think MSI Z77MA-G45 would be sufficient to your needs.

If you want higher IPC go intel. Specifically for ARMA.

If going intel and on a budget, go Ivy or even sandy. The z77 g45 should be sufficient. You seem to know what to expect from a cheap board so don't expect more. With good cooling on both the cpu and motherboard vrm area you should definitely be able to do mild overclocking.

How much of an overclock can I expect to get on the G45 with my existing HSF (Xigmatek Gaia) and RAM (8GB Crucial 1333mhz)? Is 4.0-4.2GHZ without altering the voltages a reasonable expectation?

I can't tell you anything with certainty. A can say that the motherboard should not limit your overclock much if at all. In fact I really doubt it would. Modern cpu's overclocking is more on a cpu by cpu basis.

I can also say that most Ivy bridge cpu's which is what I expect you would be getting can get 4-4.2ghz. Since ivy and haswell are not soldered and use TIM, some cpu's are abnormally hot. I am not saying yours will be but that some are. The gaia is a pretty decent cooler for the price, but some cpu's are just hot. To put it simply, the chances are high that you should be able to reach those clocks.

Can I expect to sell my 1090t for around $100?
