Upgrade from core 2 quad 8300 to Ivy bridge or Haswell? Help

One is B85 chipset and the other is H87, I'd probs say the H87 is the best one of the two.

The consumer chipsets (Z87, H87, and H81) are intended for the average or enthusiast home user and include a number of features intended to improve the system's overall performance. The business chipsets (Q87, Q85 and B85), on the other hand, lack many of the performance features but instead include many features that are useful for IT departments in larger companies.

Add another 4GB RAM module when you can, but def go for an i7-3570k and Giga GA-Z77-DS3H instead of that Haswell setup. Haswell mostly just brings better integrated graphics for laptops, HTPC, etc. The parts I mentioned are only $10 more than the Haswell setup you linked to and you'd have an easy to OC unlocked CPU and a MB with Z77 chipset that's built for OCing. The only slight nit pick is the MB is limited to just 2 ea SATA 3 and USB 3 ports. The rebate deal on the GA-Z77-DS3H is only good through 6/30 though.

hell on top of what Frag Maniac said i've even heard people recommend Sandy Bridge over ivy-bridge, depending on if you're overclocking, as IB has higher temperatures and tiny minute performance difference over SB.

Personally i agree with Marsey99, i'd get second hand parts. You can find some very decent deals on here. I'd get a Sandy bridge platform from trusted users, and then sell your current card. With the save money from SB setup and your card being sold, you could get a much better 5XX or 6XX series card and overall have a longer lasting gaming rig.

If you look at my spec's i'm at 1280x1024 and 4gb is fine for the games i've played so far.(sc2, crysis, source games, sw:tor)

Otherwise i vote for haswell, as Ivy's socket is being phased out with haswell and you seem like an every 2-4 years upgrader; you'd have a lot better option for upgrading with a haswell setup in the future than an Ivy Bridge one.

Except it's recommended you get a Haswell certified PSU to go with, because Haswell has the new C-States standard. Otherwise you can't even use the new power saving features.

Haswell has the least amount of actual processor power increase Intel has had for some time. It really is made mostly for mobile devices due to better power saving and integrated graphics.

I used to agree with what a_ump said regarding SB vs IB, but after seeing the benches on the 3570k, I realized it was minor temp differences with better out of the box performance and still plenty adequate OCing on the k models.

Besides, Newegg has already discontinued the 2500k, and Amazon's price on it its $250. That's the real bummer on SB. IMO the sweet spot in budget gaming CPUs is the 3570k right now.

Or we can consider FX 6300 which I think is a good compromise, and send the rest into upgrading your graphics and monitor.

Between the two I will take Haswell, or 3570K for the same price if you are overclocking.

The problem with the FX 6300 is it lags behind quite a bit on the majority of games that don't actually require a quad for good performance. I agree that he needs a GPU upgrade to balance things out though.

that psu thing is a non issue. Read around a bit more on it when u have a chance.

My In Win Commander III 800W has no issues with my i7-4770K, and I didn't even think about that.

Not necessarily. Most quality PSUs out there on the market right now will work just fine with Haswell, and even then if you already have a PSU, you can disable the new C-states in BIOS, and it should not be much of a problem.

I didn't say Haswell isn't backwards compat, but as I said the advanced C-States mode they use is not usable unless you have a PSU that supports it. It cuts out one of scant few things Haswells are better at, the least of which is increased performance for gaming. Like I said, they're more practical for mobile use than desktop. The Haswell he pointed out above isn't unlocked and it's only $10 less than the 3570k, which is a much better deal.

Guess there's 3 here that game at 1280x1024, i chose to game at it as for some reason i'm better at FPS at that res(CS:GO), and its easier to futureproof gaming since i was on a budget .

@topic: and at stock i'd have all the faith in the world in them, i run an Ivy bridge celeron and even it keeps me at very high settings 85% of the time, sometimes i do have to turn CPU settings, post processing, and whatnot to high or medium. So a stock i5/7 should have no problem. Don't hesitate, i still say Haswell

I'd probably go Ivy (3770k) just because the chipset is 100% matured. You can't really go wrong with both but in terms of end of the line obselete platform stuff, that only applies to your motherboard. You can always buy a new motherboard when Haswell's replacement comes out.

Intel CPUs are fast enough now that it doesn't really matter beyond benchmarking. The I7 9xx stuff still competes well with the current I5 and thats 3 years old now.

If it was just for gaming I would probably agree with some and go for a 3570K if money was tight, although I acknowledge the 3770 is the better option, in most games there is little difference, with of course the odd exception.

Im not a fan of buying used stuff.... and I dont like overclocking.

The only options are the ones I listed above, and I plan on buying another 4 gb ram later.
