I'm looking to upgrade my dual 8800 GTX to something better or equal, doesn't have to be dual cards. I'm not looking to OC, just want something that works out of the box (don't have time to tinker). At least one HDMI out required. Thanks.

Budget: $150

My current specs:
Board: 775 LGA, 0P611C
Processor: Intel Core 2 Extreme QX6800
Memory: DDR2, 8GB, 4 sticks: G.SKILL 4GB (2 x 2GB) 240-Pin DDR2 SDRAM DDR2 800 (PC2 6400) Dual Channel Kit Desktop Memory Model F2-6400CL5D-4GBNT
PCI-Express x16 (I believe they're 2.0)
GPU: 2x Nvidia GeForce 8800 GTX
PSU: 950w

Get 1050 and 1050ti.

Nuff said. Not sure whether a UEFI gpu will boot on that mobo though.

A 1050Ti if you wanna stick with Nvidia

or

AMD RX 460 if you wanna go the AMD Route.

I always check prices against newegg.com if anything.

Holly crap SLI 8800 GTX memories. You could probably buy a whole system on the electricity you will save

GTX 1050ti for sure, but you'll be bottlenecking the GPU with your current system. I hope you have a platform upgrade plan to move into Kaby Lake/Ryzen or something in the near future.

I am definitely looking for a new build near end of the year and looking to pass this rig along to my nephew. Regarding the bottleneck; will it still perform better than my current cards?

Both the 1050(ti) and the 460 "should" work on a BIOS motherboard.

Probably will, especially in cases where SLI doesn't scale (or scale well) but it'll depend on the game, resolution, image quality settings, etc. The improvements you'll see are probably not as much as you would probably hoped.

I appreciate the help. I'll be going with the 1050ti and see how it goes and post the results in case anyone else is following along.

Thanks, everyone.

Your board is based on 680i chipset, so it's PCI-e 1.x, not 2.0.
As for performance... 8800 GTX SLI doesn't even come close to GTX 1050 Ti.
Crystal ball - ACTIVATED :
8800 GTX SLI = GTX 285 + 10%
GTX 285 +10% = GTX 460 1GB OC/GTX 560
GTX 560 = ~GTX 650 Ti
GTX 650 Ti + 20% = GTX 750 Ti
GTX 750 Ti (x1.8) = GTX 1050 Ti

So, GTX 1050 Ti will be around 4x* faster than a single 8800 GTX and around 2.2x* faster than 8800 GTX SLI.
Crystal ball - DEACTIVATED
*Depending on game, settings, location, etc.

Dude, I can't believe you're rocking decade old graphics cards, but respect, this card was the business in its day - incredibly fast and pretty quiet too. :rockout: Check out the TPU review.

Almost any modern graphics card is likely to be more powerful than this nowadays, so I'll also recommend a GTX 1050 or stretch to a 1050 Ti if you can.

Out of pure curiosity, what are you playing with those cards ? i had trouble running STALKER on a 8800GTX last time i used it a few years ago. On high settings 1080p >30fps.

It depends on how much time games were run on that setup, but i agree performance vs watts wise, it was a bad choice to run those cards.

Some good recommendations already. Only thing I would add is SLI was more of a thing when you got those 8800 GTX, not so much now so I would get the single fastest GPU that is in your budget.

Update: I ended buying the MSI GeForce GTX 1050 Ti DirectX 12 GTX 1050 Ti 4GT OC 4GB 128-Bit GDDR5 PCI Express 3.0 x16 HDCP Ready ATX Video Card for $129.99 after $15 rebate. I considered the RX 470 but I went with nvidia out of sheer familiarity with the brand, so nothing against that recommendation fellas. Install was straight forward. I had an initial crash but nothing updated drivers didn't fix. It's definitely quieter on boot-up that's for sure. It used to sound like a jet taking off when I would boot it up. Big thanks to everyone for the help.

Next upgrade will be monitor. Two monitors or large curved one? Currently I have a 24in monitor (22in screen). Anyway, thanks again I have to go get that rebate now.

I just saw your post, sorry. I am actually not really playing games these days. I have an old collection on Steam that my nephew sometimes goes through. The Portal games have been the latest I ever played and I never experienced an issue.

Can't really go wrong with any of choices that were mentioned.

Hell, even RX460 would have been an improvement.

You should also perhaps start looking into some used 2nd gen core i motherboard+CPU kits. They go for cheap and will get you some nice extra performance with a newer GPU.
