Hi Guys,.
I need a bit of guidance on whether a GTX 285 will be a worthwhile upgrade from a GTX 260 216. I have noticed that in COD MW 2 the framerate at times gets a bit low. I have a
Q6600 @ 3.33Mhz and 4Gb Geil memory. The motherboard is a Gigabyte 965P-DS4. Any help greatly appreciated.

You would be much better off getting an ATI HD 5870 or ATI 5970 Both those cards will play COD MW flawlessley,
AND you will get DX11 (somthing that Nivida cant offer)

Hope that helps :)

System specs say 1680x1050...really my 260's still pretty solid @ 1920x1080. I'd say save your money and wait for more DX11/next gen parts to come out. What's your MW2 fps looking like? You could push your 260 a bit more...see if it helps, I had to put an AC GTX on mine, couldn't take the stock fan anymore wanting to keep lower load temps. Mines at 710/1554 1188 @ 1.06v atm. I don't have MW2, but will see how well I fare in BC2 beta here shortly...hoping my card does ok! I'm holding out for the gf100, and then see what get's me what I want for what I can afford with what's available then.

Honestly, I'd say wait unless you really want the extra power now, but really I dunno if it'd truly be worth it for ya . But let's get an idea of what you're running the game @, what drivers you on? what kind of FPS do you get?

I am running at 1680x1050 with the latest Nvidia drivers. The card is OC 625/1350/1050. I get low 40s in busy areas. I know low 40s sound ok but I can feel a noticeble slowdown.

for the price and at your res the gtx 285 just isnt worth the price of admission more expensive then the DX11 ready 5850 and 10-15% slower then the 5850 over here in the states on average i see a $80 difference between a 285 and 5850 and less performance for more money just dosent make sense :toast: if your a diehard Nvidia fan and can wait a bit longer just wait for Fermi as that gtx260 should handle every game at the moment without an issue if it feels sluggish cut the AA lvls and turn off vsync if that dosent work start looking for around for better drivers as i know the newer Nvidia drivers have issues with overclocking the gpu and have just not been up to par as of late

Good advice. I will stay with the 260 and eventually go to the I7 and get a new card then. Thanks a lot.

np just around here its $370 ish for a 285 $280-300 for a 5850 and i know down under its even MORE expensive so dropping that cash for no real benefit in the long term just dosent make sense besides that q6600 + 260gtx should be fine for another year

FERMI = code name for the new Nvidia gpus due in march / april there Nvidias DX11 gpus to answer ATis 5k series which has been out for 4 months now altho fermi is still 3 months away from an availibility perspective

anyway my point is no sense upgrading now

285 is more expensive and slower then atis mid range DX11 gpu (5850)

the gf100 gt300 fermi (all the same damn thing just different code names) i brought them up because some people wont consider ATI they just prefer nvidia :toast: nothing wrong with that but if your gonna drop money on an Nvidia gpu its better off being saved for the new gpus there coming out with

besodes Alien vs Predator will be here soon and its a DX11 titles with tessellation if your gonna get a new GPU it should at least let you play with all the bells and whistles right?

Fermi is Nvidia new gpu due in march this year. They are supposed to be better than ATi 5xxx series. Though we will wait and see. Crazyeyesrepaer..u beat me to it while tpying~~~

Haha, that article talks about the differences in PCIe ''2.0'' 1x/4x/8x/16x....even when at 1x with PCIe 2.0 there is more bandwidth available than a PCIe 1.0 X16 slot. :nutkick:

You are absolutey wrong. Please show us some facts that tell me otherwise. Considering those facts don't exist, I won't hold my breath.

I really dont know what you are doing at TPU, you have no idea what you are talking about. Please save your self the humiliation and stop talking. If you would have any knowlege about it, you would know that a 1.0 16x PCIe slot has the same bandwith as a 2.0 8x slot.

icmacdon, I owned tons of GTX2xx cards and I've ran them in various SLI configurations, as well as benchmarked them extensively (GTX 260 SLI, GTX 280 SLI, single card setups of those cards, etc). You would see way better results with an additional GTX 260 for SLI purposes than from a upgrade to a GTX 285. The most you would be able to see from a upgrade to 285 is anywhere from 5% to 25% at the most, depending on the title in question, the resolution and amount of AA/AF. Some titles would show no performance improvements (many would show 2% or 3% at most), however, on average you would see around 10% to 15%.

With another GTX 260 (and the PSU in your system specs should be able to handle it easily) you would be able to see performance improvement of 80% to even 95% in some titles (which is what I'm seeing at 1920x1200 with little or no AA/AF). SLI has really come a long way in the last few years. You can even force your own SLI profile on games that don't have them hard-coded in the drivers.

Say what? PCI-E 1.0 @ 16x roughly equates to PCI-E 2.0 @ 8x, the main difference is that 2.0 doubles the transfer rate from 2.5GT's to 5 GT's.... or in simpler terms.... a data rate of250MB/s to 500MB/s. PCI-E 3.0 will increase the transfer rate to 8GT's but because of other optimisations (improved encoding scheme meaning lower pass through overhead losses) , it will effectively be double the rate of 2.0.

I own both cards, and I can say the upgrade is definitely not worth it.

My advice for most people looking to upgrade graphics cards right now is: As long as you have a decently modern card, WAIT! Don't buy at a time when there is no competition in the area you are thinking of buying. Give the prices some time to go down.
