Hello Im looking for an upgrade from gtx 280 havent built a rig or checked anything in almost 3 years so Im really having a hard time.. is the 650 2g a considerable upgrade? My big issue is I'm wanting to spend under 200$ Out of date hardware guy in need of help.

P.S. I have a Asus P6T mobo are there any good network cards out there for 50 bucks over the onboard network

Thanks in advance to any responses appreciate your time.

The 650ti will be an upgrade, but your better off with the 660ti route. Whats wrong with your onboard network?

You won't ever need 2GB on a 650. By the time it can use all that RAM in gaming, it is already crawling in the single digits fps.

650ti is an upgrade but not that much. Remember that the new CUDA cores are actually less powerful than the old cores. But you do get a ton more of them.

I'd go for the 660 or 660ti. The AMD route has more value in the with the 7850 or 7950.

for 200$, I would look for a 6970 2GB used because they are quite powerful for the price.

A 7870 will do just as good and has the new GCN which is still being supported and continuously improved. It also sucks less power.

Gtx 660 or 7870. Even a 7850 2GB would be a great upgrade for under 200 dollars.

Grateful

@ MX Pheonix 216 I have 15 meg cable and it just seems like my onboard network won't do the job maybe it's just me was hoping a NIC card would boost it a bit..

TO everyone else thank you very much for your responses it's helped me realize it's gonna take a 660 ti or Maybe I might go back to ATI which i have not done in almost 10 years lol.. Last card i owned from ATI i think was a diamond 1950 ? or something.

I don't think there will be any benefit to a dedicated network card--generally, the onboard one is much, much faster than the upload/download speeds you can get.

A HD7850 2GB can be had for ~$160 used, and I've been very impressed with mine. You can probably also find a HD7870 for sub-$200 used. A GTX660 is another solid choice :toast:

As far as good brands for AMD cards, ASUS, MSI, and Sapphire are some of the best. Powercolor isn't bad, but their customer service isn't as good.

Would doing SLI with another 280 be a bad idea??

You could, but not all games scale well with SLI, you wouldn't have DirectX 11, and the power consumption would be rather enormous.

If you're willing to buy used, I purchased a MSI HD7850 2GB Twin Frozr (a cooler, quieter, and better built design) for $160 including shipping. So you'd be able to save a bit that way. The Sapphire, however, is a very good card and it would be a substantial improvement (realistically, either would, but I prefer Sapphire)
